Pollard Canine Society – 14th May 2023

I thoroughly enjoyed my appointment, thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge Dalmatians at the Premier Open Show, set in fantastic grounds. Our ring was a bit of a challenge with the guide ropes, thankfully nobody tripped over them trying to make the most of the space with a moving breed. It was nice to see the exhibitors spending the day at the show all together, created a lovely atmosphere and all the entrants displayed the correct outgoing temperament required for the breed.

Dalmatian

Puppy (3,1)

1st Miss C Bradley Hafwenna Valyria – Two black spotted bitches, littermates and very much of the same type. Just 6 months old and looking very raw as expected. Even decoration, very feminine head with well broken ears. Very well schooled and has a great partnership with her handler, moved out positively. Best Puppy In Breed

2nd Miss F Burke Hafwenna Mother Of Dragons – Lots of same comments apply to this feminine bitch, well schooled for her young age but still enjoying her time in the ring and displayed outgoing temperament, two happy puppies. Needs to develop all through, not the upper arm of her sister.

Junior (3,0)

1st Mr K & Mrs D Whincup Tamilanda Instant Star – Very striking 15 month black spotted bitch, nice balance to her head, with strength across her muzzle but retaining her femininity, ears held well and nicely broken. Strength to her muzzle and clean throat. Loved her dark pigmentation. Plenty fill to her forechest, well laid shoulder and return of upper arm, strong bone down to beautiful compact feet. Strong topline, just flowed from head to tail. Muscular hindquarters, nice bend of stifle enabling her to drive from behind with well let down hocks. Presented in fantastic fit condition with a clean coat, and felt like she got better in each class. Pleased to award her BOB and see her take Group 3 after a long day.

2nd Miss S & Mrs S Jenkins & Ridgway Luccombe Strawberry Ripple – Powerful 13 month old liver bitch. Pretty face, well set ears and flat skull. Feminine muzzle, moderate stop. Nice length to her neck leading into well laid-back shoulder, she moved positively with reach and drive in all directions around the ring, well held topline and tail carriage. As she is a bigger frame, just needs a little more time to all come together, really well handled and made the most of the space we had. Just preferred the overall balance of 1.

3rd Miss F Burke Hafwenna The Red Viper – Litter brother of the puppy class entrants, came in for the puppy challenge, liked his overall balance just pipped by his sister as felt she was more forward in her front development.

Post Graduate (5,1)

1st Repeat 1st Junior

2nd Miss N & Mr J Derrick & Ryan Kalokairie’s Hocus Pocus – This 2 year old liver bitch showed her socks off, although visually very different to 1, lots of the same comments apply. I judged this bitch a year ago and she has really came on in all departments. Love her head, really cheeky expression also. Amber eye, with good pigmentation throughout. Easily recognised as a liver, lovely colour. Plenty lung and heart room, elbows held close to her body and good depth to her ribs. Strong topline, tail set and carried well. When she moves she really pushes off the ground. She has strong hocks and excellent width to her thigh, really pushed in the challenge and happy to award her RBOB.

Open (6,2)

1st Repeat 1st Junior & 1st Post Graduate

2nd Mrs FCT & Mr J M Hartley & Griffiths Miragua Heart To Heart – More densely decorated 5 year old black spotted bitch, dark pigmentation on a lovely white background. Dark brown oval eyes, clean mouth and used her ears well. Moderate throughout nothing overdone, but everything in the right place. Moved out with purpose to take 2nd in this strong class. Nice girl, handled sympathetically and she put up a strong contest for RBOB, just felt the liver stepped up a gear in the challenge.
