South Wales K A Open show 11th February 2023

The South Wales K A open show was held on 11th February at Merthyr Leisure Centre, Merthyr Tydfil. There was a good entry from 529 dogs and a lovely atmosphere throughout the show. I was very honoured to have been invited to judge Best In Show at this the Association’s first Open Show.

 My Best in Show was Rose & Blackburn’s Min WH Dachshund Stargang Pot of Gold at Redanflight (AI), This dog’s superb outline and confident movement caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring. Lovely head, eye & expression and so pleasing to go over. Good angulation fore & aft and strong, muscular hindquarters. Shown in excellent coat of good texture. He didn’t put a foot wrong during his time in the ring.

Res Best in Show was Bubb’s Wandris Please Yourself. Very attractive Cairn Terrier with dark, expressive sparkly eyes set well apart. Strong jaw with large teeth. Muscular body with well sprung ribs and strong loin. Shown in excellent condition with quality double coat of good texture. Moved with purpose and drive carrying her head well.

Best Puppy in Show was Grainger’s Black Cuillins Catriona (imp DEU). Lovely young Skye Terrier so nicely balanced in head which is of a good length with a strong muzzle. Skull of sufficient width; nicely feathered ears which she held well. Good angulation infront and behind. Body of good length, with deep, long ribcage leading to short, strong loin. Moved freely and soundly, appearing effortless. Lovely double coat of good texture & shown in excellent muscular condition.

Reserve Best Puppy in Show was Stephens’, Ravenho Looks Like Trouble. Lovely well-proportioned head of good size. Good forechest and well grown for age. Shown in excellent coat consisting of crisp, tight curl and in excellent muscular condition.

Best Veteran in Show was Stephens’ Curly Coated Retriever Sh Ch Brightmeadow Just One Look ShCM. A beautiful example of the breed throughout and belies her 9.5 years. So well-constructed with excellent angulation infront and behind. Good depth of chest; short, strong loin. Lovely topline which she held well on the move. Moved covering the ground well with each stride. Shown in excellent coat and muscular condition.

Reserve Best Veteran in Show was 12 year old Whippet, Snelgrove’s Huntinghill Jazzmatazz. Beautiful head and eye. Good bone, excellent reach of muscular neck and excellent topline which she held well on the move. Moved soundly both coming and going.

Bob Dyke Memorial Open Stakes 46 1 B C Catriona 2 Finch’s Jassendue Manet’s Medley Am Cetgueli. Brittany. Very compact & cobby. Well-proportioned head with correct ratio of skull to muzzle length. Large open nose; pleasing eye shape, colour & expression. Skull & zygomatic arch sufficiently rounded. Sufficient bone & correctly shaped feet infront and behind. Good depth of chest & spring of rib and nice topline held well on the move. Shown in good coat & muscular condition. Moved soundly with typical short stride. 3 Meakin’s Layoli Firecracker at Miksang. Tibetan Terrier.

SWKA Puppy Stakes 52 1 B C Catriona. 2 Russell’s Fraulynzway Lightning Bolt. GSP. lovely dog with masculine, well-balanced head; not overdone in any way. Nice eye with intelligent expression; large open nose. Excellent bone; good depth of chest and spring of rib for age. Excellent angulation fore & aft. Correct, spoon shaped feet. Nice topline; pleasing width of upper & lower thigh. Moved soundly. Shown in good coat & in muscular condition. 3 O’Neill’s Ramsayville Gigi at Taligal (AI) Labrador Retriever.
