Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Wales

THE BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG CLUB OF WALES

OPEN SHOW

THURSDAY 17TH AUGUST 2023

JUDGE: KAREN FITZSIMMONS (LANLEADANE)

Thank you for the opportunity to judge your delightful breed and was really pleased with the overall quality of the dogs under me. There were some lacking the required bone and some heads without the required stop. However, I found temperaments to be sound and presentation of a high standard. Thank you to my very competent steward, Julie.

DOGS

Veteran (4 entries, 3 abs)

1. Marshall’s Matthew Puchate Perly of Bernannan (Imp Pol)

Despite standing alone, this 7 year old was a worthy winner of this class. He has a strong head and muzzle with the required well defined stop. Well off for bone throughout and has super compact feet. He presents a well balanced outline and holds a strong topline. Good width to chest. Moved well in all directions. A credit to his owner. Best Veteran Dog

Junior (1 entry)

1. Miles’ Jaybiem Noah Fence

Another who stood alone, but was very worthy of his first place. A very promising young man, who has good strength to skull and muzzle and excellent stop. Lovely correct eyes. He is well angulated front and rear giving a very balanced outline. Well off for bone throughout. Super feet. Good width to chest and body developing well for age. He is sound on the move in all directions, but movement on the day was just a tad untidy particularly in front.

Post-Graduate (4 entries)

1. Bramble’s Nelstephbern Me and My Boy with Shirdees

There is a lot to like about this 18 month old young man, who I see is a son of the Best Dog and when he is fully matured will certainly be challenging for top honours He has a masculine head with strength to skull and muzzle with correct eyes. He is very well off for bone throughout. He is well balanced with good front and rear angulation and a super strong topline. Good spring of rib and depth and width of chest. He moved well with plenty of reach and drive.

2. Marshall’s Bernolli Dragon Heart at Bernannan (Imp Rus)

This 2 year old has a good width to skull and muzzle. Would prefer a darker eye. Good bone and feet and has good width to chest and depth of brisket. Well angulated front and rear, but not quite the topline of the winner. He moved soundly in all directions.

3. Meakin’s Bernesgo Saburban (Imp Rus)

Not as well balanced as the 1st and 2nd , but is well off for bone. Has a broad enough skull, but slightly long in muzzle. Good eyes and expression. Well ribbed and good muscle. Moved soundly in all directions

Open (7 entries, 1 abs)

1. Cotton’s Ch. Shirdees Greatest Showman at Jukesbern

This dog impressed as soon as he came into the ring and is so very masculine, but absolutely no signs of coarseness. He has a very strong head with a well defined stop and strong muzzle. He has super eyes and expression. He has great bone and substance throughout and he has great feet. He certainly has the required width and depth of chest and shown in good muscular condition. I found him so very well balanced with well angulated front and rear. Presented in great condition. He moved well in all directions with reach and drive. I was delighted to award him Best Dog and RBIS and his many attributes are certainly passing on to his offspring.

2. Miles’ Jaybiem Modus Operandi JW

This was another very impressive male, who pushed the winner hard for top honours. Has a strong masculine head with good strength to muzzle. He has super bone and feet. Great width and depth to chest and has substance throughout. Strong topline. Well angulated front and rear giving a well balanced outline. Moved well in all directions. Pleased to award him Reserve Best Dog

3. Cotton’s Kernow Billy No Mates at Jukesbern

Another quality male with a super head, well defined stop and good muzzle. He did not quite have the bone of the 1st two dogs and was slightly longer in back, so not quite as balanced. However, he is well angulated front and rear and had good width and depth of chest and body. Moved soundly in all directions.

BITCHES

Veteran (2 entries, 1 abs)

1. Akehurst & Bridges’ Ch. Kernow All My Loving VW

At 9 years old, she is certainly a wonderful example of the breed and I am not at all surprised to see that she is a Champion. She has a delightful feminine head with a well defined stop and super eyes and expression. She is well off for bone throughout and is well angulated front and rear giving a well balanced outline. Still has a super strong topline and in super condition. She was ultra sound on the move and not showing any signs of her age. An absolute credit to her owners and a delight to judge. I was very happy to award her Best Veteran in Show. Well done.

Junior (1 entry)

1. Love’s Gorsebern Question Mark

This young lady is just out of puppy and currently very immature as one would expect and needs time. Her head is yet to develop and would prefer a more defined stop. She has good eyes and expression. She would benefit from more bone throughout. She has good width to chest for her age. She is moderately angled front and rear. She was handled very sympathetically to get the best from her and she moved OK in all directions.

Special Yearling (1 entry)

1. Sutton & Davenport Willis’ Nelstephbern Dior By Design

What a really lovely youngster this is, who I am sure is destined to have a very bright future and I see she is sired by my Best Dog. She is so very feminine with a very pleasing head and super eyes and expression. She has enough bone throughout and good feet. She is so very well balanced with a super outline and well angulated front and rear. She has good width and depth to chest. Shown in super condition and moved with good reach and drive. She pushed the Limit winner very hard for top honours and I was delighted to award her Reserve Bitch and shall follow her career with interest.

Post-Graduate ( 5 entries, 3 abs)

1. Meakin’s Salentum Terrae Amber (Imp Ita)

This 3 year old has a pleasing head with good width to skull and muzzle. She has good eyes and expression. She has adequate bone throughout and is well angulated front and rear giving a well balanced outline. Would prefer a bit more width to chest. She has a good topline which she held on the move. Moved well enough in all directions.

2. Akehurst’s Velvet Van’t Pachthof (imp Bel) JW

This youngster has a good feminine head with strength to skull and muzzle, but preferred the darker eye of the winner. She is well off for bone throughout and has good width and depth of chest. She just did not appear as balanced as the winner as slightly longer in back. She moved soundly in all directions

Limit Bitch ( 2 entries)

1. Griffiths, Orme & Miles’ Jaybiem Iris I was With Utwo

My notes say simply stunning and she certainly is and I found her absolutely enchanting. She is so very feminine but still has the required strength throughout. She has a very pleasing head with a well defined stop and super dark eyes and a delightful expression. She is well angulated front and rear giving a well balanced outline. She is well off for bone and has good width and depth to chest and body. She is well muscled throughout. Shown and presented in wonderful condition and handled to get the very best from her. She moved extremely well with good reach and drive in all directions. I was delighted to award her Best Bitch and Best in Show. Well done.

2. Riseborough’s Malindibeach Serenade at Moonbach

Another lovely example of the breed, who gave a good account of herself. Pleasing head and eye and lovely expression. Good bone and substance throughout. She is well angulated front and rear and has good width and depth to chest and body. Strong in topline and moved well in all directions.

Open (1 entry)

1. Weston’s Ch. Bernfawr Jonquill

Another quality example of the breed and was not surprised to see that she is a Champion and at nearly 7 years of age is a credit to her owner. She has a super head and eyes and lovely expression. Good bone and feet. She is well angulated front and rear giving a well balanced outline. She moved very sensibly and soundly in all directions and handled and presented so well. She pushed the top winners very hard and was a pleasure to judge her.
