Welsh Springer Spaniel Club

WELSH SPRINGER SPANIEL CLUB OPEN SHOW 18th FEBRUARY 2023

I would like to thank the Club for the invitation to judge the breed open show and for their kind hospitality and thanks to my most efficient steward. Some exhibits didn’t cope as well as others with the ring size and surface and I assessed the dogs’ movement as best I could, some reluctant to give their all on the mat surface. I was extremely pleased with my final line-ups and the overall quality of the exhibits, such a lovely breed to judge.

VETERAN DOG (3)

1st Graham SH CH TAIMERE’STWISTER AROUND NYLIRAM JW Sh CM VW

A super well constructed dog, well off for bone and has correct height to length ratio which gives him a super outline. He has a beautiful head of correct proportions with adequate stop. Body of good depth and well coupled with adequate rear angles. Moved out well with driving rear action. Shown in excellent condition, does not show his eight years, a credit to his owner. Best Veteran in show.

2nd Caldwell & McDowell BOWDONIA ONLY THE BRAVE FOR CERYSAN

Another pleasing veteran, masculine in head with pleasing expression. Good neck length and well laid shoulders, adequate rear angulation. Well boned and well made throughout. Moved well with a steady pace, thoroughly enjoying himself.

3rd Brown BOWDONIA OZZIE VW

MINOR PUPPY DOG (2)

1st Short TOFTWOOD ZIGGY STARMAN

Two baby puppies in this class. My first was a confident youngster, loved his head and expression with good eye colour. Correct body shape with good topline and correct tailset. Needs to tighten in front assembly but has the makings of a quality dog. Loved his rich coat colour and texture. Once settled moved soundly, should have a bright future. BPD.

2nd Mitchell KENZDUO LET IT BE

Typical head with good shape to skull and correct earset. Has adequate bone and substance for a youngster. His coat is developing well and I liked his colouring. A little unsure of himself today and needs to settle on the move.

1st Stevenson MYMMSBROOK MATADOR WITH BLYTHWAY JW

Best of heads with correct stop and lovely expression. Very well constructed throughout, good neck length, well sloped shoulders and straight front with good bone. Adequate bend of stifle and presented in gleaming coat and condition. A confident and sound mover but tending to carry his tail a little high.

2nd Graham DON’S AS BOLD AS BRASS WITH NYLIRAM (IMP SWE) JW

Attractive head of correct proportions, adequate stop and good finish to muzzle. Strong front assembly with shoulders well laid, adequate bend of stifle and strong hocks. Still lots of maturing to do but a very promising youngster. A sound mover with strong rear action.

NOVICE DOG (5)

1st Brook EIRANDYLIS GEORGIA MOON

Very attractive in head, dark eye and lovely expression. Correct front assembly, strong sloping shoulders, ribs well sprung. Coat of good silky texture and lovely rich colour. A very unruly youngster but has lots of promise about him. Difficult to assess on the move but settled more in his later classes. One to persevere with.

2nd Bennett CERYSAN CRUSADER

A dog well off for bone and substance. I would prefer him more refined in head as quite broad in skull. Well laid shoulders and well muscled hindquarters with adequate angulation. Not in the coat or condition of my first place.

1st Gaylor & Robertson HENIVERUCE KING OF BREWERS

A very well constructed quality dog with a smart outline when stacked. He has a very pleasing head of correct proportions and good eye colour. Presented in excellent condition with good rich coat colour. Moved well but carried tail down today in the challenge.

Masculine in head with good proportions, has adequate stop and correct earset but would prefer a darker eye colour as this detracted his expression. Strong neck of good length, well sprung ribs and well developed thighs. Did not have the coat finish of my winner.
