British Utility Breeds Association Open Show held at the Kennel Club Buildings
Saturday 18th March 2023
Many thanks to BUBA for their generous invitation and to all exhibitors who entered the show. The atmosphere was friendly and happy all day with big-hearted applause for all. I was spoilt for choice at the end of the day and very pleased to hear the stories behind my choices.
Best in Show – for best in show I shortlisted several exhibits but my final choice was: Cheatham’s - Ch Schipdale A Kind of Magic - Schipperke – Adult, fully mature male giving a correct silhouette. Alert and lively dark oval-shaped eyes giving a foxy expression. Well-set ears and correct length of neck firm topline with strong loins appropriately rounded rump and well-developed muscles. He moved on small tight feet with a short brisk stride. He stood out well today. RBIS – Brooks & Cairns – Corursus Become the One JW – Fch Bulldog – Solid, compact with ample bone nicely sized Bat ears set high, square head and in proportion to the body. Well-defined stop and muzzle enough dept to the jaw, well-opened nostrils. Strong neck and nicely arched. Good depth of chest and spring of ribs slight roach to back with a strong muscular loin. On the move, he was free-flowing and very sound. 3. Webb – Chifido The Chosen One – Chow Chow – Lovely square strong outline with excellent bone. Broad flat skull and sufficient stop clean dark oval shaped eyes enough length of muzzle finished with a large nose. Excellent mouth pigmentation and good scissor bite. Deep broad chest with matching spring of ribs. Firm topline and powerful loins. Well, let down hocks with ample bone and muscle. Once moving he displayed a short pendulum action soundly. 4. Hickson – Ch Kichigai’s Only the Lonely – Keeshond – Excellent wedge-shaped head with dark almond-shaped eyes strong neck of enough length and full ruff ample bone to well-padded cat-like feet. Well-set tail curled tightly over his back and finished with a black tip. He moved with a clean sharp stride. Best Puppy in Show - Webb – Chifido The Chosen One – Chow Chow – Lovely square strong outline with excellent bone. Reserve Best Puppy in Show – Kitchener – Olymbinar’s Michandy Midas Touch – Mini Poodle – a very smart youngster full of life elegant and gay-spirited, long fine head with moderate stop nicely chiseled foreface, tight lips, and strong chin. Good length of neck strong and fitted well into shoulders, ample breadth to chest, and nicely sprung ribs. Pleasantly muscled thighs with a good bend at stifle and short hocks. Neat oval-shaped feet with strong pasterns. He moved soundly with a free light stride. 3. Poole – Terra Dos Celtas Tell Me Everything Naf Taf – Shar Pei – An exciting youngster. Alert compact and short coupled, Calm and independent. A brick-shaped head which had a flat skull, ears small with upturned tips pointing towards eyes, moderate stop. Well-padded muzzle finished with a large nose. Enough wrinkle throughout. The tail base was set high and curved over back. Strong muscular hind legs with slight angulation. He had a vigorous free stride. 4. Simper & Scoates – Clydum Country Lass – Tibetan Spaniel – Pleasing youngster nicely balanced, happy, and active. With a lovely expression from dark oval-shaped eyes, slight dome to skull, and enough cushioning to muzzle. Nice length to height and level topline small hare feet neatly feathered. On the move, she was straight and positive. Her coat will come with time. AV Import Jr. 1. Cassidy – Ring Riders Teotihuacan at Chinaskys (IMP HRV) Xoloitzcuintie – Aloof and wary in the ring which is breed typical. Broad wide skull, enough definition of stop clean almond shaped eyes, and developed cheeks good bite with teeth set square to jaw. Acceptable length of neck including tight smooth skin. Elbows held close to chest that was deep, plus nicely sprung ribs to match. BP AV Import O. 1. Cassidy – Athena Goddess of Wisdom Iz Kanekso at Chainaskys (Imp Rus) - Xoloitzcuintie – Feminine wedge-shaped head defined stop almond-shaped eyes dark and alert, well-sprung ribs. Firm-level topline muscular loin with moderate tuck-up. Long, thin tail carried well. She moved on moderate hare feet. BoB 2. Prince – Sangre Caliente Amidala Padme (Imp UKR) - Xoloitzcuintie – Slightly older bitch appealing wedge head, better mouth than 1, topline could be a little more level, strength in loin. Well-developed thighs and moderate turn of stifle. AV Utility Veteran 1. Schipperke - Bawden & Brown - Ch Khanate Gin Fizz SchCM - Spritely male with good foxy expression, broad chest firm topline with short strong loin excellent set on of tail. As a 10yr old he was very true and clean on the move. 2. Keeshond – Hickson – Ch Kichigai’s Only the Lonely – this boy never ceases to amaze, always very well turned out, and knows his job. Short compact ample spring of rib firm topline short strong loin and never misses a beat on the move he pushed hard today. 3. Japanese Akita Inu – Fowkes – Bel Ch Tsoyu Gin-Raikou Kyoshi – This young lady belied her age 9.5 years she has been kept in tip top coat condition and muscle tone. Appealing feminine head with aloof expression small triangular ears, nicely crested neck blending into shoulders. Ample bone throughout finished with a high set tail tightly curled over back. AV Utility MP. 1. Dalmatian – Baker – Kelevra Chive Talking with Dalleaf – a smart black spotted young man at the start of his show career. Kind dark almond-shaped eyes giving a friendly expression high set ears framing head. Complete pigmentation to eyes nose and lips. Hopefully, he will not grow much taller saying that he is well-balanced at this time. 2. Tibetan Terrier – Rudderham – Dejaru Masquerade – full of character this youngster's first time out for him with lots of positives. An appealing head strength in muzzle and well-formed teeth and a good framework to build on. AV Utility 1. Tibetan Terrier – Laffling – Dejaru Queen of the Night – Litter sister to 2nd in Av Utility MP – Well balanced with a nicely developing chest. Clean straight front legs with slight spring at pasterns, hind legs having well-bent stiles and low set hocks. She moved very well for one so young. 2. Dalmatian – Neath-Duggan & Coyne – Kelevra Pickle My Fennel with Buffery – Liver bitch of ideal size – she was full of excitement besides the prettiest feminine head almond shaped eyes, nice length of neck into shoulders, and ample bone thought-out. AV Utility Puppy dog – 1. Mini Schnauzer – Parker & McDonald – Violi Storm Tracker – Sturdy compact almost square in outline on the move his balance shone through which won him the class. 2. Kooikerhondje – Purser – Twybrook Charming Prince – this young man was a little distracted at times which affected his movement. He has nicely sized plates of orange-red on a white background he has ample bone all through. Given time to hone his showing skills he should do well. AV Utility Puppy bitch – 1. Chow Chow – Webb – Grozio Akcentas Doja Chifido (Imp Nor) – Smooth black girl Confident and very happy. Active and square in outline head held high and their tail carried well over back on the move she skimmed the floor without effort. 2. Chow Chow – Osborn – Jasava’s Fezziwig – Well-developed girl appealing head and great rough just lost out on the move today giving away 3 months in age time for her to firm up. AV Utility Jr – 1. Poodle (Std) – Brook – Sculbrook The Beat Lives On – Choc poodle lovely filled chest and spring of ribs strong short loin. He was pleasing to watch on the move. 2. Kooikerhondje – Purser – Twybrook Charming Prince – this young man was a little distracted at times which affected his movement. He has nicely sized plates of orange-red on a white background he has ample bone all through. Given time to hone his showing skills he should do well. AV Utility PG - 2. Kooikerhondje – Stewart & Straaijer – Qunack’s Favor Light For Twybrook (Imp NLD) RL1EX – Lovely mature bitch. Nicely balanced throughout which showed in her movement on slightly hare tight feet. 2. Poodle (Mini) – Collier – Michandy Love of The Game – Pretty girl needing time to develop muscle which will help fill her out more. AV Utility Open 1. Kooikerhondje - Stewart – Duckhills Thistledown Dance of Emmi Over Twybrook (Imp SWE) RL3EX - Excellent proportions, balanced. Lovely feminine dark eye, ears with ringlets, slight wave to coat, ample bone, top-line firm and holds her outline on the move, good tail, springy powerful movement. 2. Boston Terrier – Guy – Wynele Trooping the Colour - nicely filled chest with well-sprung ribs he moved on compact round feet. AV Utility Brace 1. Dalmatian - Collier – well-matched pair of bitches moving in unison very well practiced. 2. Dalmatian – Chappell & Williams – 1 dog and 1 bitch not an easy match as the dog often has a longer stride to a bitch well done. Judge Janet Kay
