Maghull & Merseyside Canine Society

Maghull & Merseyside Canine Society - 3rd December 2023

Thank you to the Officers and Committee for inviting me to judge at this very friendly and well run show. It was a delight and I enjoyed my time and the dogs immensely. Sadly, we had a sudden snow downpour overnight so kept some exhibitors away which is a shame but understandable.

American Cocker Span - Sadly all absent due to the weather

Cocker Spaniel

Puppy (8 – 1A)

1st Eisen, Kerriglow Black Dove, 6mths and 1 week old. Everything you want at this age, holding a lovely outline and very sound for such a young puppy. Wonderful dark eye and expression, giving such a melting look and kindness about her, good ear set framing a good skull and correct stop. Nice moderate reach of neck sitting into correct shoulders. Good spring of rib especially for her age, topline correct and held well on the move.

2nd Tomlinson, Milalder Lady Madonna, 9 mths old, more mature throughout. Very similar to 1 in many ways, another fabulous expression and lovely dark eye with tight rims. Head & good clean occiput with correct stop giving a lovely shape to her head. Rear drive was good and lovely straight front action again holding her topline well on the move with a happy tail action.

Junior (6, 2A)

1st Eisen, Kerriglow One Step Closer at Crankwoods, 14 mths nicely mature giving firmness throughout as you go over him. Lovely coat and condition showed and presented to perfection. Correct head and shape, with good neck full of muscle and firmness leading to nice tight correct front assembly with adequate width to the front and correct depth of brisket. Correct length of body to height ratio giving a clear outline. Nicely muscled throughout using to his advantage as he went effortlessly round the ring with his lovely tail action. Delighted to award BOB.

2nd Tomlinson, Milalder Jumpin Jack Flash, I see litter brother to 1st puppy & son of Open Winner– what a lovely litter. He is taller all through and not quite fitting his frame quite yet as a bit loose in places but what is there is definitely alot to like. Wonderful head, and lovely front angulation with correct angles and good forearm giving a nice length to his stride. Good spring of rib and nice short loin giving strength in his movement. As said loose all round but expected for a puppy but so sound and typical. In the puppy challenge he held it together enough to just pip his sister to BP.

Post Graduate (7, 2A)

A hard class to judge as all at a different growth rate, post grad can often be an in between class as not puppies but equally not into their full adult potential quite yet.

1st Tomlinson, Milalder Dreaming on a Star, She was a bit shorter in overall length but in keeping with her height ratio. Her head was slightly broader than I would like but still maintained the correct dark eye and kind expression, and nothing course at all about her, so only being picky here. Moved with a lovely flowing action round the ring with good forward reach and drive from rear. RBOB

2nd Coombes, Tomarisroan Star Maker, better length than 1 but smaller throughout. Wonderful coat and condition.

Open (5,1A)

Tomlinson, Milander Silver Star, won the class on movement, such sound straight movement. Not overdone in anyway with correct head and good expression, lovely deep chest with well sprung ribs. Nice turn of stifle and tidy hocks making for fabulous rear movement.

2nd Prydderch, Rockllocers Blissful Blush, smaller than 1 and not quite as tidy in front movement, I preferred her head to 3rd.

English Springers

Puppy (1A)

Junior (1,1A)

1st House, Gleadsbury Destiny Belle, 13 ½ months. A very raw youngster who is just going into that leggy stage where everything hasn’t quite caught up with itself. Lovely eye and expression, adequate depth of breadth to skull, with good defined stop. Chiselled beneath eyes to frame good almond eye shape, correct length of muzzle with good depth to it. Nice tight feet allowing to stand on good legs, a bit loose behind so would like that to tighten up as she grows and settles into herself.

Open

1st Smith, Melverly Vignette, nothing flashy about this bitch at all, it is all about hands on with this girl. She stands 4 square with such a naturalness to her showing good balance and shape. Shown in such lovely tight condition, not too much coat so can show her attributes off well. Her head and neck leading into front assembly is so correct and sound – a joy to go over. Movement was just as you expect effortless, as the saying goes if made right it will move right and she is the epitome of this. BOB

2nd Cunliffe, IR SH CH Calvadale I say of Fallenleaf CJW18 Cent’w, 6 yr old who unfortunately lost out to the younger girl who was just on form today. So much to like about her and from first glance she appeared to be my winner as so typy and shows a lovely shape to her, andlges all flowing perfectly. However, not in quite as hard condition as the winner, who just couldn’t be denied today, and so just lost out on that but both lovely girls and a joy to judge. RBOB

1st Philipson, Menstonia Meteor, nice head of adequate width and correct dome shape, cleanly chiseled under eye with good medium eyes, good colour.
