North Of England Welsh Springer Spaniel Club

North Of England Welsh Springer Spaniel Club 5th Nov 2023

I just want to start by thanking the North of England Welsh Springer Spaniel club for inviting me to judge there show and to thank my very efficient steward Collin for keeping the ring running smoothly all day. Lastly to thank all exhibitors for entering under me. I found the quality overall very good especially in my bitch classes, i was spoilt for choice in the bitch challenge.

Class 1 – MINOR PUPPY DOG (2)

What a start to the day this was, two stunning puppies both with a lot to like.

1st HARRISON, Mr T D and Mrs H L, GLENBROWS CASANOVA This young dog just had the edge today as he was much more settled on the move than 2nd. I liked him for his overall balance and correct amount of bone. Well-proportioned masculine head keeping the lovely kind expression a Welsh is known for. Well laid shoulders with correct return of upper arm. Strong rear quarters which he used to power around the ring showing off his super attitude. Pleased to award him best puppy in show, i will watch his career with interest.

2nd DOUGLAS, Mr I and Mrs D K, SANTALLINA OFF AND RUNNING Another puppy i really liked for his bone and balance, very pleasing head and good length of neck leading into well laid shoulders. He was quite unsettled on the move today but with time I hope he will settle as he has a lot of promise.

Class 2 – PUPPY DOG (2)

1st HARRISON, Mr T D and Mrs H L, GLENBROWS CASANOVA

2nd CLARKE, Mrs C L, TIGERROCK THE WOMBLES

Masculine young man with a well-proportioned head, lovely substance and overall shape. Would have preferred a little more return of upper arm. Strong moderate rear, he moved well.

Class 3 – JUNIOR DOG (1)

1st SHORT, Mrs G, Mr P and Miss N, TOFTWOOD ZIGGY STARMAN

Young dog who still has a lot of maturing to do. Kind head. Lovely rich red and white coat. I would prefer more substance and angulation to make a more balanced picture.

Class 4 – YEARLING DOG (1)

1st CLARKE, Mrs C L, TIGERROCK TICK TICK BOOM

His head is masculine and well chiselled, slightly domed. clean long neck into a good front construction. Moderate bend of stifle, strong wide rear which he used well on the move in all directions. Personally, would like him to drop into himself a bit to balance him out.

Class 5 – POSTGRADUATE DOG (1)

1st ROOK, Mrs A, EIRIANDYLIS GEORGIA MOON

I really liked this dog, he is a very typical Welsh. Head is well proportioned with a perfect amount of stop. Kind dark eye, giving that melting expression. Strong muscular neck leading into well placed shoulders and a good spring of rib. Correct topline, with a gentle arch over the lion. Strong wide rear which he used to power round the ring. He would benefit from being stacked properly, maybe ringcraft could help.

 MID-LIMIT DOG (1, 1)

 LIMIT DOG (1, 1)

Class 8 – OPEN DOG (4, 1)

1st & BIS RITCHIE & BUTLER, Mrs and Miss, SH CH SLAPESTONES DIAMOND MINE JW

This dog caught my eye as soon as he entered the ring and he didn’t disappoint on further inspection. Very much the finished article, his melting expression drew me in , he had a masculine head with correct proportions and perfect chiselling. Long muscular neck leading into an excellently constructed front. Deep chest with good spring of rib. Strong well muscled loin, Used his well angulated rear to power round the ring. For me he had everything I was looking for in a Welsh and I couldn’t deny him BIS

2nd CLARKE, Mrs C L, SH CH TIGERROCK MAGIC WOUNDABOUT JW

Handsome male, good front and rear angulation. Deep chest and nice spring of rib, presented well. Moved with ease. Just felt he was sloping his topline on the stack which spoiled his outline but he held it better on the move.

DOUGLAS, Mr I and Mrs D K, CHANANGEL YORKSHIRE GOLD TO SANTALLINA

Class 9 – VETERAN DOG (3)

My notes say what a lovely class of males and it was. All 3 dogs in this class were top quality.

1st & RBD GRAHAM, Mrs J, SH CH TAIMERE’S TWISTER ROUND NYLIRAM JW ShCM VW

Loved this boy for his type and balance, a stylish male hardly showing his age apart from a little grey on his face. Balanced head with dark eye. Long neck leading into a super front construction. Correct topline with slight rise over the loin. Strong wide rear which he used to power around the ring. Pleased to award him reserve best dog and Best veteran in show.

2nd CLARKE, Mrs C L, SH CH FERNDEL HIGH FIDELITY WITH TIGERROCK ShCM ShCEx

Another top-quality male with the most beautiful head piece, well-constructed front and rear. Another lovely mover, could easily swap places with the winner on a different day.

1st 1. HARRISON, Mr T D and Mrs H L, GLENBROWS HARMONY

This baby just made me smile, what a happy, cheeky little soul she is. Feminine throughout with a pretty proportioned head, lovely neck and super front angulation. Well bodied for her age, super little mover and true coming and going. If I was super critical I would prefer a little more length of leg. Her attitude to life was a joy to see. Best puppy bitch.

Stylish bitch who was lovely and balanced, pretty head. Good front and rear. Moved true from all angles.

I loved this bitches type, she had a super typical outline. She moved well. I was disappointed when I checked her mouth.

Class 13 – JUNIOR BITCH (4, 2)

1st HARRISON, Mr T D and Mrs H L, GLENBROWS WISH

For me this bitch was one of my finds of the day. Super head peace, feminine with good proportions, kind eye and lovely chiseling. Super front and depth of chest. My hands glided over her into her strong wide rear, which she used on the move to her advantage. She was presented in tip top condition with a rich red and white gleaming coat. I was pleased to award her RBB. I will watch her career with interest. I would have happily taken her home.

Flashy bitch with a lot to like, well proportioned head piece and kind eye. Strong neck, good depth of chest and well sprung rib with plenty of heart room. Firm topline with gentle rise over the loin. Good rear and well muscled. She was a top drawer bitch who excelled in profile movement.

2nd CASEY, R J, TIGERROCK LIT DES ROSES WITH WILLOWMEANA

Feminine bitch, of a different type to number one. Pleasing head and eye, good front and rear angles. Moved well, just preferred the balance of the winner today.

1st GRAHAM, Mrs J, NYLIRAM THE MOTH CATCHER

A quality bitch with a typical Welsh outline, front was well angled with a good chest depth, rear was moderate and wide helping her move with ease. True coming and going. Won the class on her movement.

2nd SHORT, Mrs G and Mr P, FERNDEL FIRE GEM AT TOFTWOOD

I liked a lot about this bitch and thought initially she was my winner, feminine and balanced throughout, she just didn’t seem 100 percent sound on one of her back legs today which was a shame.

1st RITCHIE, Mr A, Mrs T C and Miss D T, SARABANDE DANCING QUEEN AT SLAPESTONES JW (AI)

A pretty bitch who wasn’t overdone in any way, correct size. Good clean lines and well angled front and rear, moved with purpose and drive.

Best bitch and RBIS

What a way to end my day, this bitch took me by surprise. My hands flowed over her clean lines effortlessly, a beautiful head with a kind eye. Lovely clean neck which led into one of the best fronts of the day. Well filled in front and spring of rib was super, strong wide rear with good muscle tone. Lovely tight feet. She had the overall shape and balance I was looking for with that typical rise of the loin. One of the best movers coming and going. I could not deny her BB.
