29.01.23 | Golden Retriever

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge. I would also like to thank the exhibitors for giving me a lovely entry for my first judging appointment. I had two excellent stewards who kept everything running smoothly.

Puppy Dog or Bitch (6 entries, 1 absent)

 1. Loverock. Waldron-Smith & Zubair’s - Thornywait Starstruck with Lovissa JW

A beautiful 11 month old bitch who caught my eye straight away with her balanced outline. A pretty, feminine head, good pigment giving a kind expression. She has a good reach of neck into well-laid-back shoulders, with correct forehand angulation. She has well-bent stifles without exaggeration. Standing on straight legs with the neatest of feet. She held her level top line on the move. A joy to watch.

Delighted to award her BP & BOB. Later in the day, she went on to achieve Gundog Group 2 and Gundog Puppy Group 1.

2. Wood’s Strathlon Shirli Valentine

Another beautiful bitch with similar attributes to 1. A lovely feminine head with a kind eye and good pigment. She has a good forehand, standing on straight legs with round catlike feet. I found her overall outline balanced. When moving she holds her super topline. To nit-pick, I just preferred the rear angulation of 1.

Junior Dog or Bitch (5 entries, 3 absent)

1. List’s Haydengold Gossip Girl JW

A beautiful cream bitch who fills your eye with her flowing, balanced outline. She was not in her best coat today but there is no denying her quality. With a pretty feminine head, she has a good forehand, standing on straight legs with catlike feet. She has well-bent stifles. Moved well whilst holding her topline. Considered for BOB today, but sadly she was not quite settled in the challenge. I was happy to award her with the RBOB.

2. Brown’s Sansue Love Note at Louellabrook

Another pretty cream bitch with a feminine head. She has a good outline, although just needs time to mature to fill her frame. Moves soundly with a level topline, however, I would like to see her with a little more enthusiasm to show her to full advantage.

Graduate Dog or Bitch (5 entries, 2 absent)

1. Loverock & Waldren-Smith’s Thornywait Save My Space at Lovissa

A handsome gold boy. He has a head that is masculine but balanced, with a kind eye giving a soft expression. He is balanced throughout with a good reach of neck leading into well laid-back shoulders and a good bend of stifle. Won this class today on movement.

2. Archers’ Haydengold Just a Rumour at Sunandair JW

A different type from 1 but I liked this boy a lot. He has a masculine head but without being coarse. A good reach of neck, with correct front angulation. Level topline, short coupled with a good bend of stifle. He was very well presented with a lovely outline when he stood. Moved soundly.

Post Graduate Dog or Bitch (4 entries, 1 absent)

1. Broadhead’s Monchique Last Samurai JW A balanced gold dog who has a masculine head but without coarseness. Good reach of neck with correct front and rear angulation without exaggeration. He stood on straight legs and neat feet. He moved soundly with drive around the ring.

2. Brown’s Sansue Love Note at Louellabrook

Limit Dog or Bitch (5 entries, 2 absent)

 1. Chan’s Lovissa Hello Dolly at Wemcrest

A gold bitch whose balanced outline stood out. She has a kind dark eye giving a soft expression. A good reach of neck into a well-laid-back shoulder. She has a good bend of the stifle. Moved well retaining her level topline. I just felt that she had the edge on movement today to win this class.

2. Copley’s Lalique Lord of the Rings at Hamcar

A different type than 1. He is a masculine dog with a good head and expression. Good forehand construction and short coupled. Would prefer a little more bend of the stifle. He had a level topline which he held whilst on the move.

Open Dog or Bitch (5 entries, 1 absent)

1. Wood’s Monchique Mrs Brown JW

A beautiful mature bitch. A pretty, feminine head with a soft expression. She gives a balanced outline without any exaggeration. Stands on catlike feet with straight legs. Good front and rear angulation with no exaggerations. She moved out well with style and drive whilst holding her topline.

 2. Brown’s Sansue Love Note at Louellabrook
