It was an honour to be asked to judge Mastiff’s at Crufts this year and I would like to thank my Stewards, Richard and Bella, for keeping me in order.

I found the quality of dogs was exceptional as befits an international qualifying show like Crufts. All exhibits were previous winners from across the UK and Europe and I’d like to thank all exhibitors for their sportsmanlike acceptance of my decisions. There were some lovely Mastiffs shown which made for some difficult decisions.

My overall view was that conformation and soundness was of an extremely high standard. There is though still an amount of Haw and excessive wrinkle to be seen. If breeders are unable to eliminate Haw and excessive wrinkle we will remain on the Category 3 list, which would be a shame given the generally high quality of dogs. The breed standard does not allow for Haw and explicitly states under Eyes ‘…..showing no haw’. Where there is wrinkle on the side of the nose/foreface (extending from the inside corner of the eye down to the jowl), not only is this a potential skin issue, but it gives the dog a triangular appearance rather than square, as it’s usually combined with a long jowl. I don’t envy breeders the challenge of trying to breed these issues out as we are also a vulnerable breed with declining numbers but I feel sure it can be done.

I was thrilled to award the BOB to the dog, Ch Cyberus Diesel, a magnificent looking giant who scored on all points as far as I was concerned. If there was an award for the dog the judge would most like to take home then this dog would now be sitting on my settee.
