Darlington Dog Show Society Ltd

Breed: Spanish Water Dog

What a pleasure to award my first set of CC’s in this breed. One I have become closer to over the last couple of years and it has to be said, they grow on you. More complex to judge that many due to the variations in length of coat and today was no exception with some lovely exhibits on show both clipped and in various stages of coat. Something that makes judging this breed a challenge.

Perhaps I was blessed with a typey entry but it has been a while since I last judged them and it has to be noted that they are much more stable for type than they were 6 years ago. Much more consistent head and body shape and also, to a certain degree, size.

Thank you to the exhibitors for making this a lovely experience.

1st: Preece & Cooper’s Janamorio Northern Arlo. 3yr Brown & White dog presenting a very nice outline in his fetching corded coat. Underneath there is a very nice dog. Correct head and eye with a short strong neck into well laid shoulders. Straight front that his handler tends to stand a little wide but when he stands himself, he is correct. Level back over deep well-sprung ribs though to a moderately angled but well muscled rear. Moved true with drive.
2nd: Wood’s Chanderhill Eagle Eye. A 2yr solid brown dog who has more recently been clipped out which does change the shape and means as a judge you need to be aware. That said, when clipped there is nowhere to hide anything. Correct head proportions and nice eyes. OK front angulation but I would like a little more forechest. Level back over good ribs to a moderate rear. Moved with drive.
