Richmond Dog Show Society

Breed: Finnish Lapphund

Thank you to the officers and committee of Richmond Championship Dog Show Society for inviting me to judge my three favourite breeds.

Thank you to my excellent stewards, who kept everything flowing perfectly.

Thank you to all the exhibitors for your entries, I enjoyed going over each and every dog. There was a lovely atmosphere around the ring.

Dogs and handlers are to be commended for coping with the heat so well. To the end the dogs were showing their socks off. Quality remains quite mixed, with a finer, rangier type and a stronger, more compact type. The breed standard calls for a strongly built dog, well boned legs and a strong back. Movement is still varied, a few flat fronts in evidence, and some over angulated rears too. Temperaments were excellent. I was delighted with all my top winners.

Veteran Dog (2) 1). Cooper, Cooper & Critchlow’s Ch. Pavoskas Aly Arttu JW ShCM ShCEx VW. This boy gets better with age. He has matured into a well built male. Broad skull with broad muzzle of good proportion. Dark oval eye, giving him a soft expression. Well ribbed up with short, strong loin. Broad back. Moderate slope to croup. Correct angulation front and rear. Well muscled. Moved well with an effortless, balanced gait. Strong bone in good coat. BV. 2). Lock’s Bridus Heikki. Strong boned boy who does himself well on the move. Forechest not as developed as the winner and would prefer more lay back of shoulder. Good outline. Broad skull, good width to muzzle, stop not as defined as 1.

Minor Puppy Dog (1) 1). Ellis’ Tabanyaruu Christie Alvi . Nice outline. This young boy had a broad skull developing well, with broad muzzle in proportion to skull. Dark, oval eye and neat ears presented a soft expression. Strong in bone. Good angulations front and rear. Requiring more spring of rib which should develop as he matures. Would prefer a shorter loin. Moved well in profile, slightly narrow coming and going at present.

Puppy Dog (2) 1). Small’s Ansalfrose Weikko. Quality male who also scored in maturity over 2. Beautiful head and expression. Well balanced skull with broad muzzle, neatest of ears, well furred, and a dark oval eye, giving him the sweetest expression. Well balanced in outline, good angulations front and rear, well let down in pastern. Well ribbed up with short strong loin. Neat, oval feet, well coated. Moderate slope to croup. In harsh, profuse coat, well presented. Still needs to develop in fore chest and brisket and this is evident in his movement coming towards. Moved well in profile with a well balanced gait, maintaining his topline well on the move. BP 2). Ellis’ Tabanyaruu Christie Alvi. As in minor puppy dog.

Junior Dog (3) 1). Small’s Ansalfrose Weikko. As in puppy dog. 2). Treasure & Treasure’s Pavoskas Galaksitti . Well developed strong skull already, with defined stop. Good width to muzzle. Lovely, dark oval eye, giving him a soft expression. Lovely in outline, compact but strong in type. Moderate angulation front and rear. Needs to develop through fore chest, brisket and ribs. Out of coat today, but has a harsh texture. Moved well when concentrated, with a balanced stride. Straight coming and going. 3). Daly’s Tabanyaruu Borealis Boo.

Yearling Dog (1). 1). Treasure’s Pavoskas Galaksiiti. As in Junior dog.

Post Graduate Dog (2) 1). Fox’s Sambreeze Pingvini. Presented a good outline. Balanced angulations front and rear, short, strong loin. Broad through skull, enough width to muzzle, oval eye, medium sized ears. Needs to develop in brisket and through ribs. Moved with a balanced stride, would prefer more reach and drive. Well handled.

Limit Dog (4) Lovely class of quality dogs. 1). Lee’s Kaijartuu Ihmissusi JW. Presents a lovely outline, strong and compact. Well angulated to the front and rear, well let down in pastern. Moderate reach of neck, into well laid shoulder. Strong bone, neat oval feet. Well developed fore chest, would prefer more width to brisket. Well ribbed up with strong back. Head could be broader, but has defined stop and good width to muzzle. In excellent coat, very harsh with double coat. Moved out well with desired extension and drive. Won his class on movement. 2). Critchlow & Francis-Christie’s .Pavoskas Forest JW . Not as mature as 1 through body, which is to be expected given the ages. Strong in skull with well defined stop, broad through muzzle. Good front assembly with developed fore chest and brisket, well ribbed up. Strong in back, short strong loin. Not as positive on the move as 1, would like more drive in the rear. In good coat, harsh in texture. 3). Anderson’s Limishka Vainamoinen.

Open Dog (2) 2 quality males with slightly different head types 1). Forsey’s Ch. Arianrhod Black Sun Aeon At Muzoku. I judged this boy as a youngster and I am pleased to see that he has developed on into an eye-catching male. Fabulous boy presenting a perfect outline. Stands well over straight, strong boned legs with neat oval feet. Scored in head with good balance of back skull to muzzle. Dark eye and neat well-furred ears, giving a very soft, teddy bear -like expression. Broad through back, well ribbed up with short strong loin. In full coat of harsh texture, presented to perfection, with ample feathering to legs. Moved out with an effortless balanced stride, straight coming and going. DCC & BOB 2). Woollard’s Ch. Infindigo Lintu Miika. The same comments apply as when I last judged him, he is a well balanced male, with no exaggeration. Balanced in outline. Strong in bone, and through back. Good head, not overdone in any way. Lovely soft expression, neat well placed ear. Lighter in eye than 1. Moderate length of neck, well laid shoulder and return of upper arm. Developed in forechest. Well ribbed up, with a good spring of rib, into a strong short loin. Correct angulations in the rear, with a well let down hock. Moved well with a balanced, effortless gait in all directions. Pushed 1 all the way. Splitting hairs on the day. RCC.

Special Beginners Dog (3) 1). Daly’s Tabanyaruu Borealis Boo. Scored in head, broader through skull and muzzle than 2. Would prefer a darker eye. Strong bone and well ribbed up. Moderate turn of stifle into moderate rear pastern. Moved steadily, maintaining level topline, when concentrated. 2). Fox’s Sambreeze Pingvini. As in post graduate dog. 3). Ellis’ Tabanyaruu Christie Alvi .

Veteran Bitch (5, 1a) 1). Treasure’s Tabanyaruu Riemu Emmi ShCM VW ShCEx. Taller bitch than 2 with a balanced outline. Well coated, with a harsh. dense coat, legs well furnished. Scored in fore chest and breadth through brisket. Well ribbed up, with good spring of rib. Ideally I would prefer a broader skull, but she had a soft, feminine expression. Won this class on her movement, an effortless gait with good extension and drive. 2). Lock’s Bridus Pikkumimmi JW. Another quality bitch with a broad head and good width of muzzle, feminine expression. Good stop. Moderate bone. Well ribbed up, broad through back. Presented in good, harsh coat. Moved well in all directions with a balanced gait. 3). Stanley’s Glenchess Nulikka At Ansalfrose.

Minor Puppy bitch (2. 1a) 1). Jackson & Bull’s Elbereth Maija. Taller bitch. I would prefer stronger bone. Still needs to develop through skull, good width to muzzle. Lovely dark oval eye, giving a soft, feminine expression. Good through fore chest, still needs to drop in brisket. Well ribbed up. Harsh coat coming. A little unsettled on the move, but had a balanced gait in profile.

Ellis & Crosby’s Tabanyaruu Borealis Bliz.

Limit Bitch (3) 3 quality bitches who all moved well. 1). Anderson & Nardone’s Limishka Kareitar JW. Won this class on her overall excellent conformation. She presents a typical feminine outline. Excellent body proportions and this shows in her movement, with her well balanced gait and accurate footfall. She is feminine yet has the desired substance throughout. Broad skull, tapering muzzle that has good width. Oval eye that harmonises well with her colouring giving her a pretty, feminine expression. Well feathered strong, straight legs, neat oval feet. Strong in body, good front and rear assembly, strong through back and short loin, well let down in hock.
