Toy Poodle Critiques

Judge Melanie Harwood

Toys although not numerically high today, they were of obvious quality which left me with a few decisions that could probably change on a different day. I was fortunate with my entry in that heads were generally good and a few were exceptional. I didn’t really see any big round googley eyes that are a bit apparent in toys.

1st: 4629 ELSON, Mrs Joanna Carol Stoneside Bryan Ferry, there is rather a lot of this boy all over for me. He did give a good account of himself as he was settled on the move whilst maintaining his profile and thoroughly enjoyed his moment showing off in the ring with his handler.

1st: 4639 WATKINS, Miss & Mrs Kat & Nicola Aedan Fight For This Love, what a character he is, so full of himself with such typical fun loving poodle attitude which I love to see! Quite the pretty boy in head and expression, although the wind was affecting his eyes. He is beautifully balanced and tailored to show off his compact shape but I would like to see him carry more weight, condition and muscle tone throughout. I can imagine it’s hard for such a busy boy but because of his smaller type it will make him look a more substantial dog and of course allowing for time to mature. He has an excellent tail set and carriage and such a lovely rich coloured coat of excellent texture and well presented. He’s like a toy that you pull the string and leg go when he moves giving a few glimpses of settled moment then back to being a crazy brown baby, least he’s got attitude. Best Puppy in Breed.

A strong class of boys all with obvious breed type and quality but all of them so different.

1st: 4631 GODFREY, Miss Sandra Ch Aedan Tomfoolery, this boy presented quite the complete overall picture both stacked and on the move, he is very stallion and proud like in appearance. He really has the most handsome head and expression with a beautiful eye watching my every move. He has a super reach of neck, with a decent shoulder and upper arm placement with good spring of rib, bend of stifle and a correctly set and carried tail. He is in super condition and muscle tone throughout giving him the required substance. He has a wonderful thick coat which was presented really well. I feel he was deliberately not giving me his absolute best on the move, just giving me enough to appreciate his glorious carriage and outline but having said that his overall breed type, finished look and beautiful qualities sealed a well deserved CC win.

2nd: 4641 WHITE, Miss S Starianna Wreckit Ralph, a beautifully put down white who is as honest as they get, there is no exaggeration to him! His head and expression is really quite beautiful, lovely dark eyes, correct amount of chin, his face is so clean with fantastic pigment. He is well bodied with matching angles front and rear, correct tail set and carriage, his feet not great but he is settled and sound and honest moving both ways. For me I would like him just a touch shorter in back and he just lacked the overall flourish of the winner. I also feel he needs more hair on his legs as they look a little like his body is on stilts, a simple fix, don’t be so happy with the scissors and just let them fill out more. He deserves to wear his champion crown and I hope he does but today he had to settle with the RCC!

3rd: 4635 O SULLIVAN, Mrs Gwen AFTERGLOW ALGERNON, must mention this very eye catching male who was in glorious coat and presented to perfection. Lovely headpiece, cobby body and good spring of rib with correct tail set. For me is just a little too short coupled as he could not match the reach and drive of the other 2.

1st: 4630 GILBERT, Mrs Joyce Clopton Diamond Jubilee at Portloe, A lovely shade of silver. Lovely pigment. Clearly enjoying herself in the ring with her handler.

1st: 4636 PRETTY, Miss J J, Norwelston Remember Me, a petite and feminine little charmer. I would like more length to her head to balance out with her back skull but she is still pretty, retains a good chin and has dark expressive eyes. Good amount of neck and nicely made body with adequate angles. She’s so busy she’s trying to go faster than she needs to go which is throwing her off balance a little, but she showed me enough to see she has a good outline in profile. She’s got a good coat but needs a bit of a re-shape to show off her qualities.

1st: 4637 SHEPPARD, Mr A, Mikasa Magicstar Small Talk, WOW absolutely love her type and balance. Her headpiece is absolutely devine, just so beautiful and feminine, so clean in back skull, beautifully moulded foreface with such expressive almond eyes and a good chin. Super reach of neck set into good shoulders, she is well bodied with great substance and muscle tone throughout, good bend of stifle and correctly set and carried tail. She stands on super pretty feet and is covered by a beautifully presented jacket to show off her attributes. She came alive on the move, she is so full of herself with bags of attitude, very ‘Poodley’ and using everything she had to advantage. Very pretty side action with reach and drive while proudly carrying her head was beautiful to watch and she just could not be denied the CC & BOB. She’s still only 15 months so her best is yet to come!

2nd: 4630 GILBERT, Mrs Joyce Clopton Diamond Jubilee at Portloe. 1st in SBB

Class 2342 PGB (1 Entries) Abs: 0

1st: 4634 MAYNE, Mrs R Izadorah Noir de Noir, a feminine type of bitch with a pleasing head and expression, would like a touch more neck, she has a good ribcage and body with a correctly set tail and carriage. Not really using herself to advantage on the move.

Class 2343 LB (2 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: 4638 TODD, Mrs Hilary, Vanitonia Meant To Be, I will be honest this bitch surprised me somewhat. She is one of those classical bitches, a really honest balanced type of bitch who I feel will get overlooked because she lacks in overall finish but underneath the hair she is so nice to go over. Such a classical head and expression, nice eye shape and good chin. Not overly done in any way, she is well bodied and ribbed, good reach of neck with good angles in front and rear and a correct tailset. She is as sound as it gets and maintains her outline in profile but for me was lacking sparkle that would take her to the next level. I feel if she just shows with more sparkle and looks a less rough around the edges she will easily wear her champion crown.

Class 2344 OB (2 Entries) Abs: 0

A difficult class as these two bitches have an abundance of quality, both of a very different type and both of which I have done well for in the past and today I had to nitpick the slightest details.

1st: 4633 JAMES, Miss Tracey & ISHERWOOD, Mr Tom, Ch Afterglow Karaoke JW, a compact and extremely eye catching girl who is presented without a hair out of place. Her head is quite melting to look at and I found my self just staring at it admiring it in all its glory, she is so expressive and so so ‘Poodley’. Beautiful eye shape, clean back skull, beautiful chiselling to force and good chin. I would like her to have more neck. She has substance throughout, is in excellent body condition with a good spring of rib and depth to chest and stands on beautiful well cushioned feet. Beautiful coat and presentation. She used the ring well with her easy free side action but her front action was not performing well today, she would persist on standing out at elbow and her carriage was not on point which affected her overall picture so had to settle for the RCC.

2nd: 4632 GODFREY, Miss Sandra & BELL, Miss Celia, Ch Aedan Danced With The Devil, a super well presented bitch with immense quality, feminine in head and expression with a beautiful foreface and dark expressive eyes. She has a super reach of neck with a good spring of rib, short backed and well bent stifles. She moved out well enough but was not as free in action as she can be. In profile she was using her neck beautifully creating a pretty outline but overall I felt she was having an off day today and lacking her usual zest for showing which was disappointing considering how well I know she can go and how much I do like her, maybe not loving the uneven floor surface! In great bloom and well presented.
