CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

24TH JUNE 2023

IRISH RED & WHITE SETTERS

Judge: Magi Henderson

My thanks to the Blackpool committee for inviting me to judge at this prestigious show. My thanks also to Kirsty & Vicky my two stewards for their help.

It’s always a pleasure to judge Irish Red & White Setters and my thanks to the owners and exhibitors for allowing me the privilege to appraise their dogs. I’m extremely saddened that this beautiful breed is so vulnerable and wish the dedicated owners and exhibitors the very best of luck for the future and hope that this situation will improve for you all.

1ST: - Alanea Mirror Image (Mrs A Tattersall). Stood alone but a youngster of high quality nevertheless. Super head and expression with correct back skull and ear set. Still young and head still to finish. Clean through neck into shoulders with desired layback and excellent return of upper arm. Deep, well sprung ribs together with forehand giving a well-developed pro-sternum. Correct in bone and neat feet. Strong through loin area and with enough width in hindquarters, stifles will develop with maturity. Desired pearly white coat with clear islands. Moved soundly.

1ST: - Sh Ch Alanea Game Reserve with Danwish (Miss T Gardner): Fully mature dog full of lovely type. Handsome in head with correct foreface, skull and ear set. Moderate in neck with slight crest fits cleanly into well laid back shoulder and return of upper arm combining with deep, well sprung ribs to give good fill in front. His ribs are carried well back to strong loin. Wide quarters and well-muscled first and second thigh. Shortish hocks and well-shaped bone and feet. Moved cleanly coming and going and showed good footfalls on the around. Overall gives the appearance of a well-balanced dog with pleasing length to height ratios and good leg length. Immaculately presented in super coat and muscular condition. DCC and gave a super performance to just clinch Best of Breed from his lovely sister.

2ND: - Sh Ch Talintyre Winter Shadow (Mrs J Tait): Another worthy title holder build on a slightly smaller frame but well-proportioned throughout. Good finish to muzzle and well-shaped eye and skull. Low set ears. Arractively, crested neck to clean front assembly with favourable fill in front. His ribs are well sprung and carried back to a muscular loin. Would prefer a longer pelvis and more bend of stifle, but decent width to hindquarters and good short rear pasterns. Good bone and feet. Moved steadily going away and decent in profile on the around. Presented here today in good coat and condition. An altogether quality package. RCC.

1ST: - Corranroo Casper (Mr G C & Mrs J Bayne) : This 10 and half years young gentleman was presented in excellent coat and condition and can still put it all in on the move with true movement coming and going and balanced footfalls in profile. Pleasant head and expression. Crested and clean through neck into decent front assembly. I liked his height to length rations and good leg length.. Well sprung ribs carried deep and well back to a strongly muscled loin. Attractive hindquarters with good length and set to pelvis, wide through first thigh and well developed second thigh of correct length giving excellent bend of stifle. Strong short rear pasterns good in bone and feet.

Two very tidy quality youngsters headed this class both of whom we will hear more of in the future.

1ST: - Alanea Savannah (Mrs A Tattersall): Such a delightful head and expression on this young lady. Exudes quality with good finish to muzzle and correct eye, super in skull and shape. Crested, moderate neck which was cleanly set into an excellent front assembly with good fill in front, deep ribs carried well back to a muscular loin. Hindquarters show width and developed first and second thigh with short strong rear pasterns and good feet. Her bend of stifle is adequate at this stage but will develop with maturity. She moved cleanly away and back and showed some scope in profile. I liked her a lot and will follow her progress with interest. Best Junior In Breed.

2ND: - Corranroo Consortium (Mr G C & Mrs J Bayne) Another very well made young lady who has a great deal to like about her. Her body properties are excellent throughout with good balance to front and rear angulations and acceptable rib depth at this stage, carried well back to muscular loin. She has excellent length and angle to pelvis. Wide through her hindquarters and well into her stifles Good short rear pasterns and decent feet. Unfortunately was not quite in charge of her hindquarters going away and around at times, but when she did get her act together proved she was sound. I’m sure this will remedy as she matures.

 3RD: - Gilliegrae Hidden Mystique (Mrs S Reynolds-Crompton)

1ST: - Berryessa Ballderg with Gilliegrae (Mr G J & Mrs G A Hart): Pleasing head with correct finish to back skull. Clean and nicely crested neck fitting well into decent front assembly. Correct bone and okay feet. Ribs carried well back to strong loin. Good length through her pelvis and her hindquarters are wide and powerful with good muscular condition to first and second thigh. A little long in rear pasterns for my preference but she moved soundly.

1ST: - Sh Ch Alanea Holly Fern at Charnborough (Mr T & Mrs M E Sherratt & Blackwell Sherratt): Quality lady who shows all the maturity of this breed. Good head and expression with correct plains through her foreface and skull. Correct in back skull with low set ears framing her attractive headpiece. Moderate crested neck into excellent layback and enough return of upper arm. She is deep ribbed and well filled in front. Strong oval bone with good leg length to height ratio. Her ribs are deep and well sprung carried well back to a strong loin. Clean level topline to wide, powerful hindquarters with good length of pelvis and well bent stifles. Strong rear pasterns. Moved well coming and going and on the around showed great scope. Presented in tip top condition in coat and musculature. It was my pleasure to award her BCC.

Strong, clean neck into well angulated front assembly with good fill in front. Correct bone and good height to length ratio, with level topline.
