Birmingham Dog Show Society Ltd

Breed: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Thank you to the committee for the opportunity and the hospitality afforded me, although full of a cold, I thoroughly enjoyed the day. My thanks also to my stewards for all their help and to the exhibitors for entering their dogs and accepting my decisions sportingly.

As the custodians of this beautiful breed of dog, two things in particular concern me which should be borne in mind. Cavaliers should have a gentle expression with large, dark, round eyes, whatever the colour of the dog. Having travelled to the US recently and seen the size of their eyes, here in the UK we are in danger of losing these characteristics. Our breed standard also asks for good spring of rib which should not be ignored.

Many of the dogs were new to me having made the decision not to watch the dog judging for some time. Today a few uncharacteristic temperaments in the ring surprised me, the Cavalier temperament is so important, my placings reflected this.

All my class winners met my idea of the Breed Standard, had the desired temperament that I love which is so integral to the breed and correct scissor bite.

1st: Chapman, Mrs Michelle Amanda & Ireland, Miss Tanya Ch Ellemich American Express

Blenheim 19 months old. WOW just made my heart sing. For me he has a true Cavalier expression, soft melting, large round limpid eyes you could lose yourself in, well cushioned under, dark in colour with black rims giving that gentle soft expression. On the table was a pleasure to go over, was a well-constructed dog, correctly built short body. When he moved, he demanded your whole attention, flowed lovely around the ring, beautiful level top line both on the move and standing. Showed to perfection. In the challenge I pulled him out to my final four, he out moved and out showed the others, I could not deny him the CC, and again, against the bitch, with my co-judge approval. Dog Challenge Certificate, Best of Breed, later he went Toy Group 4.

2nd: Kerr, Miss Deborah Can Ch Cempas Northwest Passage (Can ImP) (TAF)
