East Of England Agricultural Society

Breed: German Spitz (Mittel)

East of England Agricultural Society Championship Dog Show

German Spitz Mittel – 6th July 2023

It was at East of England in 2013 that I awarded my first set of CCs, on that occasion in Kleins, so I

was thrilled to be back 10-years later officiating at the society’s final Championship dog show. I last

judged Mittels in 2017 and was excited to undertake this appointment and assess the breed that I

have adored for the past 30+years.

As breeders, exhibitors and ultimately custodians of this wonderful breed it is our responsibility to

uphold and maintain quality and standards. We should be discerning over which dogs we choose to

show; not every dog is a show quality specimen. It is my belief that in a numerically small breed such

as ours it is hugely important that we are exhibiting the very best examples that we can, holding each

other accountable to collectively keep quality at it’s highest.

General comments for breeders to consider would be body length; the true Spitz outline is a

fundamental breed characteristic I noted a few longer backs than ideal; some untidy front movement;

close hind movement; and I observed a few slightly rounded skulls which I would hate to see become

the norm. On the whole the exhibits were presented in clean condition and showed happy

temperaments.

Thank you to the exhibitors for supporting my appointment, I had a pleasing entry numerically for the

year and was satisfied with the overall quality. My sincere thanks to my very proficient stewards, both

ladies kept the ring running efficiently with good humour and professionalism.

Puppy Dog (3,0)

1st Doheny & King’s Izlou Thai Me Up

Attractive 9.5 months old orange sable. Masculine head of good proportions, with pleasing dark eyes.

Well shaped ears, which could be higher set. Balanced compact body with well set tail, correct

moderate angles front and rear allowing brisk easy movement. Good coat of correct texture presented

in excellent condition and handled to advantage.

2nd Pearce & Francis’ Longsdale The Aviator NAF

Handsome black 7.5 months old. Appealing head which is developing nicely, masculine and balanced

in proportions. Dark oval eyes lending to a soft expression. Ears are well set though slightly tall. Looks

a fraction long on the stand, but hands-on assessment dispels this. Lovely bone for size. Presented in

good coat and condition. Liked him a lot but he just couldn’t get it together on the move today

3rd Rogerson’s Nosregor Sticking Around

Junior Dog (2,1)

1st Chapman’s Kitsune Notorious (ai)

Well proportioned sable lad of 15-months, presenting a pleasing balanced outline. Masculine head of

correct proportions with dark oval shaped eyes correctly set. Neat well placed ears which he never let

up using. Compact in body with ample bone for size, tail carried tightly across his back. Good front

and rear angles and moved out soundly. In the challenge his quality and presence could not be

ignored winning him the RDCC.

Yearling Dog (1,0)

1st Drew’s Doroluna If The Crown Fits

21-month brown, not in full coat today. A little stretched in body proportions and would prefer more

bone for size. He has a masculine head of good proportions, clean eyes and well shaped ears which

appear a tad tall. Presented in firm condition. Attentive to handler and moved out steadily.

Post Graduate Dog (2,0)

1st Rogerson & Rogerson’s Nosregor Hercules

Black/white parti 26 months old with a balanced head of good proportions. Compact firm body and

stood 4-square. Shown in good coat and condition and well handled to show off his virtues.

2nd Saich’s Lindcoly Polarbear cream almost 3-years old. Unfortunately he was just not the happiest

today. Balanced masculine head, pleasing eye and attractive dark pigment. Tail is low set and loose

which spoiled his outline. Presented in good coat and condition.

Limit Dog (3,0)

1st Andrew’s Izlou You Know You Love Me of Claran

Appealing 20 months-old black, not in full coat. Balanced head of good proportions, correct dark eyes,

would prefer slightly neater ears. Sadly wasn’t always giving the best account of himself today having

the tendency to stand a little stretched in body length. Good bone for size, well set and carried tail..

Moved out correctly and with purpose when viewed from all directions.

2nd Saich’s Lindcoly Simba 2-years old male, attractive sable colouring. Shown in good coat and

condition. Balanced in outline. He just did not want to use his ears today. I preferred breed type and

head of 1. Moved out well.

3rd Durham’s Spellcast Hear Your Talk (ai)

Open Dog (3,0)

Spoilt for choice with this class; 3 quality champion males all of whom I have admired from afar. It

very much came down to performance on the day; undoubtedly they will continue to swap places

throughout their show careers.

1st Pearce, Francis & Roberts’ Ch Longsdales Rebel Rouser at Cwrtafon JW 3.5 years-old. All

masculine gleaming black presented in profuse coat and firm condition. Strong balanced head of

good proportions, attractive eyes, and neat well set ears. Stands 4-square and presents a compact

balanced outline, good for bone. Was the most positive mover in this class today covering the ground

with ease, which combined with his showmanship gave him the edge over his challengers and

ultimately BOB.

2nd Barnes & King’s Ch Izlou Shiver Me Timbers

4 years-old handsome black, smaller made than 1, though possessing many of the same qualities

and attributes. Today on the move he was a fraction wide in front, and was lacking that extra sparkle

to win top honours. Presented in stunning condition, excellent profuse coat, and firm in body and

handled to advantage.

3rd Garbutt & Corkin’s Ch Nixtev Zeventis

Veteran Dog (2,0)

1st William’s Ch Spellcast Talk to Da Paw at Trebettyn ShCM VW

12-years old, up to size black, absolutely belying his age in body, mind and attitude. He powered

around the ring with purpose and drive, absolutely sound from all angles. Pleasing for overall balance,

gorgeous typical head, good bone throughout, he still maintains the qualities and excellent condition

which earned him his title. Well handled and presented.

2nd Saich’s Hocombewood Hot Toddy for Lindcoly

Handsome sable of 11.5 years-old. Different breed type and much smaller made than 1, but both

within the standard. Good head with pleasing bright expression. Totally in proportion, good compact

body, good bone. Moved out well when viewed from all angles.

Minor Puppy Bitch (2,0)

1st Pearce & Francis’ Longsdale’s Lets Dance NAF & BPIB & RBCC

So very sound, feminine and eye catching. Her rich colour with the blackest of pigment lends itself to

the most exquisite expression. Balanced head of correct proportions with beautiful eyes, of correct

shape and set, triangular ears well set. Typical Spitz outline, good compact firm body, with well set

and carried tail. Moved around the ring with reach and drive, sound from all directions and

commanded attention. I’m sure she has a very bright future. In the challenge she kept taking my eye

and could not be denied the RBCC & BPIB.

2nd Saich’s Lindcoly Show Stopper NAF

7-months-old black. A very happy outgoing puppy who was enjoying her day. Well schooled, she was

good to go over, stood and moved well. Just very raw in development compared with 1 today.

Puppy Bitch (3,0)

1st Heslop’s Flamuna Definitely Maybe

11-months-old brown, she was the most balanced exhibit in this class, moving out soundly from all

angles. Compact in outline, with a profuse well set and carried tail. She has a feminine and balanced

head of good proportions, would prefer slightly neater ears. Presented in good coat and condition.

2nd Barnes & King’s Izlou The Truffle Maker

10-months-old black and looking the raw youngster against 1. Sadly she was not presenting the most

outgoing temperament on the day having the tendency to drop her tail and just wasn’t the happiest

despite her kind handlers best attempts. . I’m sure she will benefit from time and maturity.

3rd Saich’s Lindcoly Sugar Babe

Junior Bitch (2,0)

Two quality bitches that will undoubtedly swap places on many occasions.

1st Barnes & King’s Kitsune The Lioness at Izlou (ai)

Black of 15-months-old. Presented in excellent coat and condition. She is good for size and bone,

balanced in body proportions and has a good tail. She was handled to advantage to win this class.

She moved out steadily from all angles which just gave her the edge over 2 today.

2nd Garbutt’s Cadasaro Fighting Fit for Nixtev (IKC)

On my first look I expected this attractive typical cream would be my class winner. She has the most

pretty feminine head, of correct, balanced proportions, dark well set eyes, and good ear shape,

complete with appealing black pigment. Compact firm body and adequate bone for size. Unfortunately

she was not giving the best account of herself on the stand and front movement was hindered by

handler speed on the day.

Yearling Bitch (2,0)

1st Barnes & King’s Izlou Gossip Girl

20-months-old pretty headed cream who had left her coat at home. Nice balance to head with kind

dark eyes and neat well set ears, endearing black pigmentation. A touch fine in bone and a little

stretched in body length. Tail is well set and carried throughout. Presented in lovely condition and well

handled.

2nd Drew’s Doroluna’s Diamond Crown

Black of 21-months old, with good bone and substance, but not quite balanced in body. Ears are a tad

tall and wide set and she is a touch narrow in front at the moment, she will benefit from a bit more

maturity in body. Well coated, presented and handled, she moved soundly covering the ground with

ease.

Graduate Bitch (1,0)

1st Saich’s Lindcoly I Want It All

2.5 years-old, well proportioned sable. Compact in body presenting a pleasing outline with a well set

and carried tail. Well coated, she has good bone for size, and showed happily using her tail and ears

throughout. She moved out steadily to, away, and on the sidegait.

Limit Bitch (4,2)

1st Barnes & King’s Izlou Mustard Been Love

3-years-old black. A quality exhibit, good for bone and size, well coated and presented. Compact in

body, with a well set carried tail. Won this class on movement.

2nd Drew’s Izlou Peanut Passion

5.5-years-old black. Preferred her head for balance and found her to be slightly more balanced in

outline than 1; just lost out on movement today. Feminine head, with pleasing expression, good eyes

and correct shaped ears well set. She was presented in lovely coat and good condition. .

Open Bitch (5,2)

1st Andrew’s Ch Claran Blue Galaxy

2.5-years-old blue sable. The uncommon colouring of this bitch can really mislead the eye, and

getting hands-on allows her virtues to be properly appreciated. Well constructed, and balanced

throughout. Compact firm body with good bone for size, well set and carried tail. Pleasing balanced

head, dark eyes and neat ears. She was presented in firm show condition, well muscled and was

expertly handled to show off her balanced sound movement to, away and flowing sidegait. Delighted

to award her the BCC.

2nd Pearce & Francis’ Ch Longsdale Miss Mussell

A pretty 4.5years-old sable, a very worthy champion that possesses many of the qualities of 1. She

was presented in better coat, handled to advantage and never let up showing. I had to be hyper

critical to split these two and I just found 1 to have a slightly more positive front.

3rd Saich’s - Lindcoly Love Affair

Veteran Bitch (2,1)

1st Andrew’s Ch Dagsljus Against All Odds at Claran (Imp Swe)

11.5-years-old. A credit to her owners this pretty sable was shown in good coat and wonderful

condition, looking every inch the title holder that she is. Very compact she is balanced and sound all

through. On the move she covered the ground like a dog a fraction of her age, striding out with

purpose and drive, and exhibiting a truly flowing sidegait An absolute joy to watch the obvious bond

between this dog and her handler.
