Blackpool Championship Show

24th June 2023

Dachshund (Wire-Haired)

My thanks to Blackpool for the invitation to judge this Breed, and to my two Stewards, Steve & Norrie who kept me going with good humour & lots of coffee. The Standard Wire/Haired are such an attractive and sturdy breed and the main winners were of good quality there is no doubt, and I very much enjoyed the privilege of judging some super hounds. There were a couple with dentition issues & one or two lacking in ribcage to adequately house heart and lungs well enough to be fit for purpose, and one with weak pasterns & long nails. We had a good size of ring to be able to show off their paces well, so free movement played a good part in many decisions.

Puppy Dog (2)

1st Farrington’s Dollydash Defender of Faith wild boar & harsh coat, smart chap & had good appeal for his proportions and balance, lovely male head, dark eye, strong neck & was well angled front & rear, still needs to finish developing, he had positive movement with good hind action, well done.

2nd Dickinson’s Sonham Double Trouble at Dakotadax different type altogether & much darker colouring, most attractive head of good balance, dark eye & long strong neck, front well under, elbows held well, slightly rangier through the body & a bit looser behind when moving at this stage.

Junior Dog (4) 1 abs

1st Carruthers Stanegate Salvador very appealing sturdy hound of high quality, most attractive head of good shape & dark eye, super laid shoulder line & good return, short forelegs & good feet with thick pads, good forechest, ribcage & strong loin, well angled rear, good tailset, held his topline well on the move and strode out purposefully with good reach, good carriage & driving well off that rear, so very close to the top spots here today and was just slightly over exuberant in the Challenge, super quality male who should easily make up.

2nd Russell & Hutchings Collidach Russell Leeves well balanced red & very much appreciated his head shape, eye & expression, he had a lovely harsh coat, good lay of shoulder & ample forechest, proportionally good with strong body & ribcage, well angled rear, solid & sound, which was evident on the move, nice exhibit unlucky to meet 1 today.

3rd Simpson’s Cumhaill Cream

1st Adams Ellesophia Fly Me to The Moon JW of nice proportions and good size wild boar colouring, attractive male head with slight stop, good eye & strong jaw, neck of strength flowing into good shoulder line, front well angled & constructed, good feet & nails, ideally would prefer slightly more rib going back, has well angled quarters & moved out nicely in this class.

2nd Ashby’s Ellesophia Oli My Boy litter brother to winner, slightly darker in colouring & is of good size, preference for the better angles & forechest of his brother, harsh coat & held his tail a little gaily, still needs to settle.
