Crufts

Breed: Whippet

Whippet Crufts 11-03-2023 Judge Mrs J P Wood

Firstly I must thank my stewards Annette Walters and Richard Kinsey for looking after our ring so well, without their quiet efficiency it would have been very difficult to get through the large entry that Crufts had drawn.

Next I would like to thank the exhibitors for bringing their dogs under me, I hope that they enjoyed their day as much as I did.

We all tend to interpret the Breed Standard slightly differently, I look for an elegant, balanced hound without exaggeration and whilst I don't believe in fault judging I do feel that soundness is of prime importance. I was fortunate to have such a lot of lovely hounds to choose from and in some cases decisions were very close. My main winners all had the correct bladed bone and slight spring of pastern with good feet, their eyes and ears fell within the requirements of the standard and so I have not repeatedly mentioned these points in my individual comments on each dog. I am pleased to report that temperaments were good and all bites correct.

1  Whitehead's Ch Citycroft High Society JW  What can I say about this lovely 8 year old pale fawn boy that has not been said before, as is often the case with whippets he is carrying his years so well. He oozes breed type and quality, is good for size and is so well balanced through from his lovely head to his correctly set tail, his curves are in all of the right places, he has the correct lay of shoulder and return of upper arm, well developed unexaggerated quarters and moved well from all angles. I was pleased that my co judge agreed that he could go Best Veteran.

2  Wayman's Speymalt Northern Star JW  This 9 year old fawn parti colour is another carrying his years well, he is good through his head, neck and front assembly, has the correct balanced outline with strong quarters and just the right amount of thigh and second thigh. He didn't put quite as much into his movement today as the class winner.

1  Downing-Christie & Christie's Zigouse Runnin Up That Hill  Not quite 8 months old this young brindle chap is still quite raw, he has a pleasing head and kind expression, adequate body for his age but still needs to drop into himself which should come with maturity. He is well muscled for his age and showed signs of moving well as he started to settle, he was presented in sparkling condition. It will be interesting to see how he develops with time.
