Scottish Kennel Club

Breed: English Setter

ENGLISH SETTER

Thanks to the SKC, my steward and most importantly the exhibitors for giving me a nice entry of the breed to go over. This is my heart breed and I enjoyed getting to judge them in my homeland. It was nice to see many of the long-standing exhibitors present and to meet many new ones. Your dogs were a pleasure to judge.

Temperaments were excellent and all dogs were presented in clean condition. No real issues with mouths, but toplines and tailsets are still a challenge.

I have heard and read a lot about “lack of quality” “things are not as they used to be” etc. and whilst I agree we no longer have the large entries we previously saw at shows, there are plenty of nice examples of the breed. I remember hearing this same thing said over 30 years ago when I first started in this breed, then 20 and then 10. At least one thing is consistent!

I found enough dogs to please me today and there were many in both sexes that I would have happily awarded the CC to.
Perhaps not the same depth in all the classes, but still many nice ones about.

Class 836 PD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1683 DANKS-KEMISH, Mrs R D Ravensett Untouchable Among Alolfrana
7m/o ob – a nicely balanced youngster, standing on good legs and feet. Moved steadily holding a god topline.

2nd: 1708 SEAMAN, Mrs B K Mariglen Just George
10m/o bb with a kind head and expression. Is correct for age and stage of development and will tighten up. Preferred the topline and tailset of the winner, but a promising youngster.

Class 838 PGD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1713 TAYLOR, Mr David Kanietter Kocoa
2 1/2 y/o light bbt, who balances front and rear. Moved out OK but needs a lot more drive when competing for higher honours.

2nd: 1716 THOMSON, Mrs K A Maursett Morganite for Caspellwynd
2y/o dark bbt of very lovely type. Has a lovely head and expression. Just not cooperating today, but one I would like to see in the future

Class 839 LD (5 Entries) Abs: 0
This was a lovely class to judge with all 5 dogs having merit and much to like.

1st: 1701 NORMANSELL, Mrs C Latin Lover Rewind For Larrenie (Imp Ita)
This 5y/o dark bb imported dog, is of a different style to most, but is a lovely English Setter. As always before judging, I had re-read the breed standard, and the opening line “of medium height, clean in outline, elegant in appearance and movement” were all present here. He is a handsome dog with a kind expression, his neck flows through well laidback shoulders into the correct topline and tailset. He presents a lovely outline standing and was moved correctly around the ring. It was a pleasure to award him the CC and later BOB. I do hope that he gains another 2 CC’s and completes his title – he deserves to carry one.

2nd: 1691 JOHNSTON, Mrs W Wansleydale Beguiled of Loonbrae
4 1/2 y/o mid bbt that stands on the very best of feet. Another who balances fore and aft and moves steadily. Can see him winning higher honours.

3rd: 1709 SIMPSON, Mrs Lesley & SIMPSON, Mr Douglas Dalreavoch Northern Legend

Class 840 OD (7 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1682 DANKS-KEMISH, Mrs R D Sh Ch Ravensett Work Of Art At Alolfrana JW
Well known and very worthy champion, with the lovely head and expression that this kennel typically produces. Correct front, good shoulder placement and level back. Moved well to win the class and the RCC.

2nd: 1688 HASTINGS MENAKER, Mrs Lorna & MOREAU, Lisa GCHB / Can Ch Jada Just Another Day In Paradise
6y/o ob dog, that has placed well under me in the USA and was not expecting to meet him again in Scotland. Apart from the obvious trimming and presentation differences, I didn’t think he looked out of place in a line-up of lovely UK dogs. He is well balanced with a correct topline and tailset and he moved out steadily. Close up to the winner and beat other lovely dogs to this placing. Enjoy your time in the UK and I hope other judges get the pleasure of seeing him.

3rd: 1705 POYNTER, Mr Louis Ellis & POYNTER, Mrs Elaine & PO Sh Ch Quensha Cowboys And Angels

Class 841 VD (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1699 LOYND, Miss D Sh Ch Crimbledale Sea The Skies JW Sh.CM
8y/o bb dogs that has the loveliest head and expression. Its no surprise he has won as much as he has and still has all the hallmarks that made him a champion. Moved steadily and was considered in the challenge. A pleasure to judge – thank you. BVIB

Class 842 SBD (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1713 TAYLOR, Mr David Kanietter Kocoa
Was 1st in Post Graduate.

Class 844 PB (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1687 GARDNER, Miss T Mariglen Midnight Muse Of Danwish
10m/o light bbt bitch who has lovely body properties and looks correct for her age. Good balance and I thought she particularly scores in rear and is already using it well. BPIB

Class 845 JB (5 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 1689 HOWARTH, Mrs J & HOWARTH, Mr David Moorbrook Owdid Thatappen
16m/o dark blue bitch from a kennel that has previously won well under me, and this is another fine girl who presents a lovely picture. Excellent coat and condition and a steady mover. I can see her winning higher honours. I was later told that this was the final points needed for her Junior Warrant – Congratulations.

2nd: 1712 STEPHENSON, Mrs Jakki Mariglen Wave Dancer for Bondgate
13m/o bb bitch who again has all the essentials. Giving her patient handler a hard time, but I saw more than enough of her to see that she has lovely qualities throughout and I think she will finish a good one. Could see her with her crown when mature.

3rd: 1679 CORFIELD, Mrs Jackie & CORFIELD, Miss Vicki Indibrooke Poachers Pride

Class 846 PGB (4 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1720 WALE, Mr & Mrs Stuart & Yvonne Chanina Golden Rose JW
2 1/2y/o ob bitch who is correctly put together. Very lovely head and expression. Correct level back which she holds well as she moved on good legs and feet. I liked her a lot and eventually she ended up with the RCC. Another that should have a title in her future.

2nd: 1686 DYKES, Mrs A Caleydene Connextion
Another excellent 2 1/2y/o ob bitch that was very close up to the winner and has many of the same attributes. On the day I preferred the hind movement of the winner but anther good one with, all being equal, a title in her future.

3rd: 1721 WELSH, Mrs Jennifer Goldbirch Burning Desire TAF

Class 847 LB (11 Entries) Abs: 4
1st: 1702 PATON, Mr D & PATON, Mrs AAW Bournehouse Secret Destiny For Meadowfoot
4y/o ob bitch from a kennel that is known for top quality dogs – and this one is no exception. A very lovely type who presented a balanced outline and moved well. In the challenge, amongst some other very lovely girls, could not be denied the CC. Her first and I would like to think there are t least 2 more in her future. Congratulations.

2nd: 1714 TAYLOR, Mrs L Wansleydale Bizzie Bee
4y/o bbt bitch and very much “my type” of English Setter. Very pretty head and expression, good balance front and rear and moved steadily. I just preferred how my winner carried her topline on the move today, but another girl who will go on to higher honours.

3rd: 1717 YULE, Mr David Rowanmyle One Bewitched

Class 848 OB (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1704 PITTS, Mr S Sh Ch Wandsfell Dream Of Me
4y/o bbt bitch that stood alone but her title shows she has and will continue to win in good company. I particularly liked her overall make and shape and she carries a good topline. Moved OK, but I suspect on a better (outdoor) surface, she would make a lot more of herself.

Class 849 VB (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 1690 JOHNSTON, Mrs W Canisp Lady

7y/o bbt bitch who is carrying a little too much weight, but still is good for size and she balances front and rear. Despite the little too much weight, she moved out nicely on good legs and feet and has a lovely slashing tail action that I like to see in this breed.

Class 850 SBB (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 1721 WELSH, Mrs Jennifer Goldbirch Burning Desire TAF
2y/o bbt who was 3rd in the lovely PGB class, and she showed and moved much better here. A balanced bitch and has a good topline. I think she is very promising and another I would like to meet again.

1st: 1690 JOHNSTON, Mrs W Canisp Lady
1st in Veteran Bitch
