Paignton Championship Show – Cocker Spaniels – 5th August 2023
Judge: Claire Sharp
I’d like to thank my stewards, Bill & Trudy Short, for their efficiency on the day. I was feeling the nerves at this, my first CC appointment in the breed and they were absolutely brilliant. Thank you to Paignton for asking me and special thanks to the exhibitors for giving me the opportunity to judge their beautiful dogs. I was absolutely thrilled that every single one of my “bests” went on to be appreciated by the group judges, with the BOB getting a shortlist in a strong group, the Best Puppy getting group 4, the Special Beginner winning Group 2 and the Best Veteran winning his group. Colour wasn’t a factor in any of my decisions, a decently constructed dog of any colour will always win if it deserves to under me.

1st: 2653 BROTHWELL, Miss M & BROTHWELL, Miss M Wilanorah ticket to the moon at Wissant
A nice headed boy who is well angulated front and rear. Big ribs well back, short loin and he has good bone and feet. Moved the best in this class and thus, had to win it.
2nd: 2677 MCMURDO, Mr R BLACK AS SOOTY LAD
Initially, I thought this was going to be my winner. Lovely in profile. A very nice head/expression, good neck and shoulders and super return of upperarm. Correct topline and enough angulation behind. A little erratic on the move.
3rd: 2676 MARSHALL, Mrs Andrea & MARSHALL, Mr David WISSANT MOON AND STARS
Class 1227 MPD (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st & BPD: 2699 SMITH, Mrs J E Della Fiumana Let's Have Fun At Luanshya (IMP HRV)
My notes for this boy start with “naughty” followed by a lot of exclamation marks! He was certainly enjoying his day out and making his handler work hard! He has a pleasing head though I wouldn’t want him any broader across his skull. Eyes of good colour, ears set on correctly and he has correct dentition. His shoulders are well laid back, good topline and a well angulated rear. Presented in lovely condition and moved well once he’d settled.
Class 1228 PD (3 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 2647 BAYLISS, Mrs & Mr D & A Wilanorah We Will Rock You
A lovely head, good neck into well laid shoulders and good length of upperarm. He has good depth and width of chest, he’s short coupled and has a decent turn of stifle. Good bone and feet. Moved nicely.
2nd: 2663 DEWHURST, Miss H Glowhill Silver Arrow At Lapidary
A lovely shape in profile and he has a very nice head. Not the width of my winner. Good bone and feet and moved well. In lovely condition.
Class 1229 JD (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 2685 RAHMAN, Mr MD & WILLIAMS, Mrs Rita Chataway Dark Louis
Super head with good chiselling. This boy is compact with big ribs, short loin and he is well angulated fore and aft. Good topline and tailset and he covered the ground effortlessly. Really close up for the DCC today. Tip top condition and presented to perfection.
Class 1230 YD (4 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 2707 WILDMAN, Mr Mike Oktumi Major player
This is a goosebumps dog and everything you see as he stands is confirmed when you get your hands on him. Everything is where it should be! He has the most beautiful head, he is well constructed all through and he has super body and substance. His presentation, like all with this talented groomer, is second to none and he is handled to perfection. He moved superbly. I awarded him his first CC and in the few short weeks since the appointment, I understand he has achieved his title – congratulations.

Decent head with chiselling and good depth of muzzle. In the class, it was evident that he had the best return of upperarm and this really showed on the move. He is balanced, well constructed and has good bone and substance. Correct topline and tailset. Moved easily and accurately. In super condition.
2nd: 2675 MARSHALL, Mrs Andrea & MARSHALL, Mr David Wissant Very Special Agent
Another very nicely presented dog with a pleasing head. He is a lovely shape in profile. Not the length of upperarm of my winner. Big ribs, short loin. Moved ok.

2nd: 2700 TAYLOR-KISTNER, Ms Paula Black Lord Wildest Dream at Frieljoanipa (IMP HRV)
Another very nice girl with a beautiful head/expression. She is smart in profile and didn’t disappoint on closer inspection. Big ribs, well back and a short loin. She moved soundly and accurately. Really was splitting hairs here between this girl and my winner and a fidget in the final stack made the decision for me.

Class 1237 MPB (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 2693 SHERLOCK, Mrs Tracey Crimicar Midnight Dreamz
Eyes of good colour and ears set on correctly. Would prefer a little more strength in muzzle. She’s a nice shape in profile, her shoulders are well laid, I’d prefer a touch more length of upperarm. Good topline and tailset and she moved nicely on the go around.
Class 1238 PB (4 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 2651 BOWEN, Mr David C & BOWEN, Mrs Sharon Glowhill Annika At Lararth
A very promising puppy. A lovely head, good neck into well laid shoulders and plenty of upperarm. She has bone, substance and plenty of width and depth. Ribs well back, short loin and a well angulated rear. Nicely presented and the best mover in the class.
2nd: 2682 POP, Miss J Bocablue Oops A Daisy
On the initial stack, I thought this pretty girl was going to be my winner. She is well constructed all through and has a gorgeous head/expression. Her tailset is absolutely fine but she was carrying her tail a little high on the move (probably just puppy exuberance) and thus, it cost her the class.
3rd: 2671 HARVEY, Miss Catherine & HARVEY, Mr Thomas Tomerine La Dolca Vita
Class 1239 JB (7 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 2684 RAHMAN, Mr MD & TODD, Mr DC Chataway Dark Chrystal
Stand out winner in this class. She is absolutely beautiful. She is quality all through. Gorgeous head with plenty of work in it. Correct ear set. She has a clean neck into well laid shoulders and good return of upperarm. Correct topline, well angulated rear and a lovely big bum. Fabulous coat presented in tip top condition. She has substance, she is balanced and she outmoved every other bitch in the final line up and thus, today, she had to win the CC. Delighted to hear that this made her up.
