My grateful thanks to the society for inviting me to judge this handsome breed and to my steward, Edmund, who was superb.

It was great to hear applause round the ring.

1877. Gordon Setter - Puppy Dog

1ST 3608 - Forester's Northern Hunter of Darkmoor with Gadieburn (Imp Deu) (Mrs E Ashton). He has good bladed bone, excellent angulation, a short level back and correct tail set but he could use more weight and is a tad long in loin. His head is balanced and well marked with rich chestnut red. Easy mover who holds his shape well. BPD.

2ND 3668 - Hernwood Everlasting Love (Miss J L Williams) At a rangier stage of development than the winner, nevertheless a good example of the breed. He has excellent flat bone, close knit feet, an almost level croup and is a free and steady mover. Pleasing head.

1ST 3608 - Forester's Northern Hunter of Darkmoor with Gadieburn (Imp Deu) (Mrs E Ashton). Repeat

2ND 3618 - Amscot Air Apparent (Mrs J & Mrs L & Mrs S Collins-Pitman & Cox & Loakes) Well this boy did his best to throw away his chances by giving his handler such a hard time. It was a crying shame that he did because he is of terrific type, fabulously made, has lustrous markings and the most handsome head. He is in hard condition and made to move well.

1ST 3660 - Caradilis Sky Rocket JW (Ms M Morgan) He has a lovely head with dark eyes and an intelligent expression, is well angulated and has a short back. He needs to develop in rib to complete the picture but carries a gleaming coat. Fabulous on the move.

2ND 3621 - Burroughtof Loch Leven at Glenarden (Mrs E M Ede) A substantial dog who I felt was a tad long in body and has rather too much flew for my preference. That said his construction is sound, his coat colour and markings are very good and he is very well muscled.

2ND 3652 - Hernwood Christmas Prince (P & C A, D Sandiford & Mazzeo) Another very good dog who was pipped at the post by the front movement of the winner. He is in lovely coat and condition.

3RD 3624 - Locksheath Beach Comber (Mrs S Gregg)

1881. Gordon Setter - Limit Dog

Entries: 6 Absentees: 1

1ST 3645 - Glenmaurangi Storm Trooper JW (Mrs A, Ms T & Mr N Phillips, Watkins & Sykes) He is built on galloping lines and has tremendous presence. He looked glorious with his deep coal black coat gleaming in the sun. His markings are rich tan and I love the pencilling on his toes. He is so well made, has plenty of bone and substance, body of moderate length and the typical flat croup. He uses his well turned and broad quarters to power round the ring. He has a lovely expression in his dark eyes, a clearly defined stop and lean cheeks. He was handled to perfection to take the RCC.

2ND 3607 - Hernwood The Botanist JW (Ms A Ashley-Turner) He is of very good type, is well angulated and has a level topline. He is deep in back rib and has a god croup and tail set. I just preferred the head of the winner.

1ST 3635 - Sh Ch Bryerdale Quantas (ai) (Mrs P J Baines)

I know nothing about the build of a weight carrying hunter, the most I have had to do with horses is giving a carrot to the one that pulled the rag man’s cart, but I understand the concept of this and as I turned round to look at him on the stack this is the phrase that sprang into my head. He is so impressive and screams Gordon Setter. He has an air of nobility about him and is a real stallion of a dog. He is clearly confident and comfortable in himself. He is excellent in front with a pronounced breast bone, depth of brisket, elbows close to body and strong flat bone. His long, lean neck fits cleanly into his well laid shoulders, he is short in back, has plenty of heart and lung room, strong loin and well bent stifles. He is in fit muscular condition with well developed second thighs. He has such a handsome head, plenty of brain room, a clear stop, dark eyes and lovely big nostrils. His head is beautifully framed by his low set ears and his coat is deep coal black with lush tan markings. He has tremendous forward reach and drive from behind showing a clean pair of heels. Last time I judged him I gave him the RCC and I am delighted to see that he has his title. It was my pleasure to add to his tally of CCs today.

2ND 3629 - Sh Ch Hernwood Achilles at Ettrick JW (Mr A J & Mrs D A Harker) He is a very good dog, well angulated, has a typical head and is a strong and precise mover. Today he didn’t have the coat condition nor the lush markings of the winner but I can see that he is a very worthy show champion.

1883. Gordon Setter - Special Beginners Dog

Entries: 2 Absentees: 0

1ST 3640 - Hernwood Boston High Flyer (Ms K Mccarthy) He was reserve in the very good limit class and presents a good profile on the stack. He just lacked coat today.

2ND 3657 - Graylacier Blue Marlin (Mr N & Mrs H Taylor). He is broader in head than the winner and doesn’t have the length of neck but he is a pleasing dog overall who carries his shape on the move.

1884. Gordon Setter - Veteran

1ST 3627 - Sh Ch Melview Moving Time JW (Mrs L Hall) A cracking dog, deep in brisket with plenty of bone and substance. Clean over neck and shoulders and has an excellent tail carriage. Animated mover.

2ND 3649 - Sh Ch Hernwood Luna Eclipse JW (Mr P & Mrs C A, Mrs N Sandiford & Jarvis) A lovely bitch in fabulous condition and full of type. She has an excellent forechest and is stylish on the move. I felt the dog had the better head today.

1885. Gordon Setter - Good Citizen Dog Scheme

Entries: 1 Absentees: 0

1ST 3662 - Roydack Peaky Blinder (Mrs S & Miss H Upton-Lovett & Upton) He is a tad steep in croup but is a lovely moving dog and was well handled. His head is balanced and he has lustrous tan markings.

1888. Gordon Setter - Puppy Bitch

Entries: 2 Absentees: 1

1ST 3648 - Hernwood Love Potion (Mr P & Mrs C A Sandiford) Super balance and muscle tone, her second thighs are very well developed. She has a slightly rounded skull, good stop, thin low set ears and dark eyes. Lovely long lean neck fits cleanly into her shoulders. She has a good forechest and there is plenty of dog in front. Free and stylish mover. BPIB. Delighted to see she was Puppy Group 2.

1889. Gordon Setter - Junior Bitch

Entries: 3 Absentees: 1

1ST 3664 - Locksheath April in Paris (Mr K Whiting) Very pretty in head with an intelligent expression she presents a clean balanced outline. Deep chest, well laid shoulders and return of upper arm. A little bit proud of her tail on the move but she goes well holding her shape.

2ND 3609 - Kilnrae Black Sapphire (Mr S Ball) Lovely head and expression she just needs to drop in chest and fill out. Steady, easy mover.

1890. Gordon Setter - Graduate Bitch

Entries: 7 Absentees: 1

1ST 3639 - Burroughtof Lilly Loch (Mr G & Mrs E Mawby) She has good body proportions, well sprung ribs and a strong loin. Short in back with well developed quarters. Head is well proportioned too and she has great tan markings. Stands on well boned legs and oval feet. Moves well.

2ND 3626 - Clohass Diamond by Melview (Mrs L Hall) A lovely bitch with a classic head, good reach of neck and well laid shoulders just not as good behind as the winner.

3RD 3665 - Locksheath Fallen Acorn (Mr K Whiting)

RES 3642 - Caradilis Sparks Will Fly JW (Ms D & Mr A O’kelly & Hancock)

VHC 3659 - Chartan Maple Mayhem (Mrs S P Thomas)

1891. Gordon Setter - Post Graduate Bitch

Entries: 8 Absentees: 3

1ST 3614 - Beechlake Hey Jude (Mr A J Burke) A lovely type but not in her best coat today. She has a typical Gordon head and dark eyes, well arched neck, good lay of shoulder and plenty of heart and lung room. Good flare over her hips and covers plenty of ground on the move.

2ND 3612 - Laurelhach Renaissance JW (Mrs F Boxall) I like this bitch very much but today she didn’t have the spring of rib of the winner. Her head is exquisite and she is well angulated front and rear. Moves with plenty of drive.

3RD 3633 - Painted Lady at Tregarrick (Ms S Leonard)

RES 3643 - Lainnireach Original Tonic at Caradilis (Ms D & Mr A O’kelly & Hancock)

VHC 3658 - Glynderys Moonstone (Dr M Thomas)

1892. Gordon Setter - Limit Bitch

Entries: 8 Absentees: 1

1ST 3636 - Bryerdale Qangeroo (ai) (Ms A Mappin) Well grown and in very good coat she has the bone and substance that makes her a Gordon Setter. She has forechest, is deep in brisket and back rib, strong neck, well laid shoulders and is very well muscled. Excellent turn of stifle and tight oval feet. Her head is simply divine. In the challenge she wasn’t as positive in rear movement.

2ND 3611 - Laurelhach Ovation (Mrs F Boxall) What a fidget! She did her best to throw away her chances but her excellent type and the quiet persistence from her handler made sure she got her place. She has depth of muzzle, a definite stop and plenty of brain room. Good outline held on the move.

3RD 3651 - Hernwood Gin Fizz JW (Mr P & Mrs C A, Miss C Sandiford & Lewis)

RES 3622 - Langstrumpf Delicatessa (Mr F C & Mrs S M Evans)

VHC 3663 - Roydack Portrait of A Lady (Mrs S & Miss H Upton-Lovett & Upton)

This was a terrific class, all four were quality exhibits.

1ST 3617 - Ch/int/ger Vdh Ch Amscot Love Is in The Air JW Ww 18/21 (Mrs J Collins-Pitman)

The string of titles that this gorgeous bitch has to her name are testament to her outstanding quality and working ability. What more could you possibly want in a Gordon Setter bitch? She is so stylish and balanced in appearance, has correct bladed bone, substance and is deep in body. She is elegant without raciness and everything just flows. Her head is correctly proportioned with plenty of brain room, lean cheeks and a strong underjaw, her eyes are dark and expressive and one look into them had me hooked. She has a strong and muscular neck, well laid shoulders, good return of upper arm placing her forelegs well under her body, good spring of rib and is deep in back rib with minimal tuck up. She carries a level topline and has the desired almost horizontal croup and a well set on tail. All this is topped off with a gleaming coal black coat that is just enough for her make and style. She moves on a long and easy stride powered by her well muscled hindquarters carrying her head high and has that ‘who’s second?’ look about her. She’s good, she knows it and I love her! CC and BOB.

2ND 3637 - Bryerdale Qookaburra (ai) (Ms A Mappin). This bitch has terrific forward reach on the move which confirms her well constructed forehand. She covers so much ground as she powers round the ring. Her head is classic Gordon and she oozes breed type. This exhibitor presents her dogs in such fabulous coat and condition, they are a credit to her. I really like this girl who has many of the qualities of the winner and it was a close decision between them. RCC

3RD 3647 - Hernwood Aphrodite JW (Mr P & Mrs C A Sandiford)

RES 3666 - Locksheath True Baloo (Mr K Whiting)
