Bernese Mountain Dog Club Of Scotland

Breed: Bernese Mountain Dog

Many thanks to the Secretary Agnes, George and her amazing committee for the lovely opportunity to judge their annual show in beautiful Springwood Park at Kelso, a privilege to award my first set of CCs in this gorgeous breed at your special event, I enjoyed everything about the weekend, the carting parade, the huge breed stand with lots to tempt, the hospitality and the beautiful presents, but above all thank you to the exhibitors who accepted all their placings with good grace, thank you for bringing your dogs for me to assess in what was a lovely entry, even the weather was fairly kind after quite a poor forecast, we had one shower and the sun graced us with an appearance in the afternoon.

I had a few concerns regarding mouths and poor rear movement, there were also a few dogs that would benefit from some ring-craft sessions, dog showing is not a cheap hobby and it was sad to see some promising young dogs throw their chances away because they couldn’t focus on the task in hand, I hope those youngsters learn their trade and they’ll be back in the ring picking up rewards duly deserved.

VD 3(0)

1. Baldwin’s Ch. Meadowpark First Class for Fortonpark. Lovely male of nearly 8 years, masculine balanced head, lovely eye, strong muzzle, good breadth to skull with well set ears, good stop, strong neck and shoulders well laid back, correct body proportions with good depth and breadth of chest, well ribbed, sound rear angulation with good tail set, moved out with an easy reach and drive, presented in excellent coat and condition, BVD & BVIS.

2. Fairclough’s Monalou Spirit of Discovery ShCM. 8 years old, masculine head and kind expression although I preferred the balance of skull and length of neck of 1, good depth of chest, well ribbed back, good strength in rear, sound top-line, he moved out well in profile, just not as tidy on the out and back.

3. Hastings’ Bernemcourt Liv’n On A Prayer.

MPD 3(0)

1. Jefferson’s Elbrusbern Amadeus. 7 months, head developing well, dark eye and kind expression, strong muzzle, a little steep in shoulder but good depth of chest and sound top-line, well ribbed back and short loin, moved out steadily in profile, just a little loose on the out and back, I’m sure this will improve as he matures, presented in good coat.

2. Wilson/Jasukaitis’ Nunziuss Vom Durrbachler Wald (imp NLD). Just 6½ months and very naughty, masculine head and expression, a little light in the eye, nice body shape, good depth and shape of rib, sound in top-line, presented in coat of good texture, would definitely benefit from some ring-craft to improve his overall performance.

PD 1(0)

1. Dickson’s Fortonpark Gabriels Way. 10 months old, kind masculine head developing well, dark eye and lovely expression, good breadth to skull, pleasing body proportions and depth of chest, well ribbed, top-line could be a little firmer but should improve with maturity, showed some very promising profile movement but a little loose on the out and back, to be expected at this age, very smart young man with a promising future, presented in excellent coat and condition, BPD.

JD 3(1)

1. Baldwin’s Fortonpark Tonyone. 14 months old, very smartly presented young man, lovely masculine head and kindest of expression, good neck and strong shoulders, straight front with good bone, liked his angulation and body proportions, needs to level out in top-line but this will come with maturity, lovely effortless profile movement, balanced in all directions, in excellent coat and condition.

2. Davidson’s Iddefixx from Balihara Ranch (imp). 17 months and a little overdone all through for me, very strong, masculine head, dark eye, well muscled neck, not as well angulated throughout as 1, showed some nice movement in profile but untidy on the out and back.

YD 4(1)

1. Reynolds’ Etterbern Bolt Out Of The Blue. Lovely young male of 20 months who I seriously considered for the DCC, loved his expressive masculine head, good breadth of skull and lovely melting eye, good neck and shoulders, lovely angulation throughout, good forechest, correct bone and good feet, sound in top-line with good tail set, presented in beautiful condition, he stood out for quality, just lost out on maturity today but he certainly has a very bright future and I will watch his progress with interest, well done, RDCC.

2. Smith’s Garwinn Vom Durrbachler Wald (imp NLD). 21 months old, masculine head although I would like a tighter eye, flat skull, strong muzzle, good depth of chest, a little steep in shoulder, well ribbed back and short muscular loin, would like a better top-line to improve the overall picture, presented in good coat and condition, moved out ok.

ND 2(0)

1. Martin’s Kernow Blue Moon. 3½ years old, initially reluctant to be assessed but he pleased when he allowed me to do so, lovely head and expression, good stop, strong muzzle, deep chest, angulation ok, good body proportions, sound in top-line, moved out well in all directions, presented in excellent coat and condition.

2. Smith’s Scooby Doo Van’t Stokerybos (imp BEL). 3½ years old, too overdone all through for me, would like a more refined head although he had a kind eye and lovely masculine expression, deep chest, well ribbed, sound in top-line with well muscled rear, fair angulation, would like more extension and drive on the move, presented in good coat and condition.

GD 3(1)

1. Baldwin/Hartley’s Auseire Come and Go (imp IKC). 2½ years old, liked his head which is still developing, correct eye shape, lovely expression, strong neck, good angulation in front and proved a nice shape when standing, moved out soundly with some good extension and drive, well muscled rear which he used well, firm top-line, would like a little better bend of stifle in rear, presented in excellent condition.

2. Bone’s Meadowpark’s Finn’s A Dream. Smaller male of 2½ years where I preferred the head proportions of 1, he had a strong muzzle, dark eye and well set ears, could be straighter in front but he had good bone and feet, good depth of chest and well ribbed back, short loin, showed some promising profile movement but think he could move so much better with a little more practise, well presented in good coat.

PGD 2(0)

1. King’s Fortonpark Class Designer. Strongly made male of 3 years, kind head and expression, lovely dark eye, straight front with good bone and feet, well angulated all through, deep chest, well ribbed back with short loin, liked his make and shape both standing and moving, moved out well with an easy, ground covering gait.

2. Macdonald’s Torridorian Aston Martin. 2½ year old naughty male who was finding it very hard to focus on his job, kind head and expression with dark eye, angulation overall ok, good neck, would have liked a little more bone on this boy, found it difficult to assess him just walking, proved to be a handful for someone else when asked to move at a faster pace, would definitely benefit from some serious ring-craft sessions.

MLD 1(0)

1. Macleod’s Torridonian Mr Solo. 4½ years old, masculine head and expression, flat skull, dark eye and well set ears, ok in angulation front and rear, good bone and feet, deep in chest and well ribbed back, short strong loin, moved out well in profile but was wide on return, presented in good coat and condition.

2. Manix’s Waldershelf Fame N’Fortune. 3 years old, a dog I have judged before and he has matured nicely, masculine and strong in head without being overdone, loved his expression and dark eye, clean, straight front with good angulation to front and rear, good depth and shape of rib, good bone and feet, moved out well and was presented in tip top condition.

3. Copeland’s Kernow Dollar Promises at Maxjabar.

OD 7(1)

Another lovely class.

1. Atherton’s Ch. Valentinn Vom Durrbachler Wald (imp NLD). 3 years old and just about in his prime, masculine, strong head with the kindest of expression, dark eye, strength in muzzle, strong neck and clean shoulders, straight front, good bone and feet, liked his body proportions, he was carrying enough substance without being overdone and ticked all the boxes for me, strong, steady top-line, well muscled and presented in excellent coat, moved out with an easy reach and drive covering the ground well, DCC & BOS.

2. Anufrowicz’s Hr Ch Jun Ch. Thunder Taro Bohemijos Zibute CBJ (imp POL). Just 18 months but lovely to assess, masculine head with kind expression and dark eye, nicely angulated front and rear which showed in his movement, good depth of chest, straight front with good bone and feet, well ribbed with strong loin and well muscled rear, sound top-line, he moved out with excellent reach and drive, a little out of coat today but this didn’t detract from his qualities.

3. Green/English’s Maithau Vom Durrbachler Wald at Waldershelf JW (imp).

VB 7(2)

1. Atherton’s Arvella Penny Lane. Nicely presented bitch of 7 years old, lovely feminine head and expression, dark eye, well set ears, strong neck and shoulders, she had good angulation front and rear, good depth and shape of rib, straight front and good bone, firm top-line and well muscled throughout, she moved out beautifully in all directions, BVB.

2. McCormick’s Torralbaz Diamond Princess. Feminine balanced head, dark eye and lovely expression, not so good in top-line and carrying a little too much weight today, however she had good angulation front and rear and moved out fairly well, in good coat.

3. Watson’s Stepdashar Sommer Girl.

MPB 3(1)

1. Reynolds’ Etterbern Fashion First. Appealing puppy of just 6½ months, very much a baby but ticking a lot of boxes already, feminine, cheeky expression with dark eye, lovely make and shape, correct bone and feet, firm top-line, a little ‘giddy’ on the move but she was so nicely put together and I’m sure she has a promising future ahead.

2. Marsden/Robertson’s Kernow Bitter Sweet Tale for Trudaleaze. Another pleasing young baby of 8 months, kind head and expression although would like a slightly tighter eye, nice body proportions, good neck and shoulder, liked her angles, well ribbed, not so firm in top-line as 1 but I am sure this will improve as she matures, moved well when she settled.

PB 3(1)

1. Baldwin’s Fortonpark Valentallina. This young bitch of 11 months gave me goosebumps as she came into the ring, loved her for shape and balance, endearing head qualities with dark eye and the most gorgeous expression, she almost dared me not to love her, beautifully made from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail, lovely angulation, correct body proportions, good depth of chest and well ribbed, sound in all departments, presented in immaculate condition, she moved around the ring as if she owned it with an easy reach and drive, I am not often tempted to walk down the line to award a RCC to such a youngster but I just couldn’t dismiss her, I foresee a super future for this young bitch, congratulations on BPB, RBCC, RBIS and BPIS.

2. Spalding’s Kinelarty Naughty But Nice. Feminine bitch of 10 months, not the head and substance of 1, body proportions and angulation ok, good depth of chest, firm top-line, she had a tendency to pace on the move, lovely temperament and presented in clean, tidy coat but overmarked beyond pasterns.

JB 5(2)

1. Rossall’s Stormberne Go Classical. Nicely presented bitch of 15 months, kind head and feminine expression although I would have liked a little more balance in head proportions, well set ears, good neck and shoulders, firm top-line, good bone, moved well in profile but untidy on the out and back, presented in good coat.

2. Watson’s Stepdashar Magical Wish. 15 months and not as good in angulation as 1, lacked substance for me, gentle, feminine head with kind expression and dark eye, strong neck and shoulders with deep, broad chest, good top-line which she held well, moved out ok.

3. Spalding’s Kinelarty Naughty But Nice.

YB 2(1)

1. Reynolds’ Etterbern You Can Bolt. Beautifully presented bitch of 20 months who I now see is the litter sister to my RDCC, many of the same qualities in a feminine form, appealing head with dark eye, lovely angles front and rear, good bone and straight front, moved out well holding her top-line firmly, felt she was just a little wide coming back to me, in beautiful coat and condition.

MB 1(0)

1. Marsden/Robertson’s Kernow Bitter Sweet Tale for Trudaleaze. 2nd in MPB, she moved with a more settled stride when she had the ring all to herself!

NB 3(0)

1. Marsden/Robertson’s Kernow Glory Days at Trudaleaze. Very typy bitch of 2 years, lovely feminine, expressive head and dark eye, could be a little stronger in her pasterns, pleasing make and shape, level top-line, good angles, moved out well in profile but could be tidier in the rear going away, well presented in good coat.

2. Marsden/Robertson’s Trudaleaze Aint I Fab You Lous. 3 years old, feminine head and expression, not as clean in rear going away as 1, would like a little better return of upper arm, firm top-line, moved out well enough in profile, presented in good coat and condition.

3. Baldwin’s Tjofselinas X Girl Eliza (imp SWE).

MLB 3(1)

1. Dobson’s Bernershaw Power of Love. 4 years old, feminine head and expression but would like more balance and better head proportions, lacked forechest and was overmarked beyond pasterns, firm, steady top-line, good depth and shape of rib, presented in good coat and well muscled condition, moved out ok.

3. Wilson’s Monalou Voulez Vous at Blumentol.

OB 10(4)

This had to be my class of the day.

1. Bridges’ Liskarn’s Love Of My Life. This bitch has just turned 2 years and I first judged her as a raw puppy, she is feminine all through with the most gorgeous feminine head, melting eye and endearing expression, she oozes quality throughout and I found it hard to find anything the least bit negative, strong neck of correct length, beautifully angled shoulders, straight front with the correct bone and compact feet, lovely body proportions, good depth of chest, lovely depth and shape of rib with short loin, well angled rear with well toned muscle, she was presented in the most immaculate condition, when she was asked to move, she knew her job inside out, a free and easy profile movement excelling in extension and drive, on the out and back she was accurate and powerful, this bitch isn’t yet mature and I believe her very best is yet to come, delighted to award her the BCC & BIS.

2. Reynolds’ Ch. Etterbern Forever Fashion. Another beautiful bitch, in excellent company today, very feminine, expressive head with melting dark eye, balanced skull and well set ears, lovely angulation in front and rear, nothing to dislike about her, lovely quality, body proportions were excellent and she had good depth and shape to her rib, well muscled and presented in tip top condition, she powered around the ring with excellent reach and drive.

3. Baldwin’s Ch. Fortonpark Look Who’s Talkin.
