Many thanks to exhibitors for their entries. This was my final judging appointment in the breed in the UK and I was delighted to have some high quality animals to choose from in my final line up. Needless to say it was a thrill to see my BOB take Group 1.

Having said that, there were quite a few animals which were very average. Maybe this is a knock on from the effect of Covid on breeding plans. I found several specimens with loose-fitting elbows which usually resulted in loose front movement. Also some faulty mouths. As an E band breed we should not need to have these in the ring.

Coats were variable, and this cannot be helped, but I wonder why owners whose dogs carry profuse feathering do not stand their dogs in front of a mirror and look at how the length of coat affects their proportions. ‘Raciness without weediness’ can be hard to find in the adult classes, but sometimes taking a couple of inches off the tummy feathering can make all the difference. I was surprised to see experienced handlers who pushed their dogs’ necks back in to the shoulders when baiting. I have no problem with judicious baiting but it should be use to lengthen the neck rather than shorten it. From an examination angle it made assessing shoulder placement more problematic. I also found doggy bitches and bitchy dogs.

Temperaments, however, were excellent and it was lovely to see a ring full of happy flatcoats. Finally I would like to say, don’t just assume that my comments don’t refer to you. Take it as an opportunity for a review, even if you weren’t at the show. It’s so easy to become kennel blind, and we need to be watchful for the sake of the breed.
