THE GORDON SETTER CLUB OF SCOTLAND OPEN SHOW

21ST MAY 2023

JUDGE Anthony Allen

My thanks to the Gordon Setter Club of Scotland for the invitation to judge their open show and to the exhibitors for entering under me and my stewards for keeping me on the straight and narrow. I had some super dogs to go over and I had to make some tough decisions, I suspect many will change places over the coming year. I was pleased to hear the class winners greeted with applause; there was a lovely atmosphere around the ring.

Best Dog and Best in Show was awarded to the winner of junior dog in Amscot Air Apparent.

Best Bitch and Reserve Best in show was the super young lady Hernwood Gin Fizz JW.

For Best Puppy in Show I chose the exciting youngster Hernwood Love Potion.

And for Best Veteran in Show I selected Rhum Night Legend ShCM VW.

PD (4)

1st Krisada Not In Kansas. BPD.

This chap scored in outline. He is 9½ months old. Head is masculine, lovely dark eye and has plenty of work so should finish well. Neck is clean and well set into his shoulders, which are well back. Good front assembly and stands on well boned legs and neat feet. Well-made through the body with ribs well back. Quarters developing well. Held his topline and tail well set. Moved out well for his age, scored in accuracy of footfall over the second place.

2nd Colourbox Wild Oats

Another nice puppy, not quite the head of the winner at this stage but has plenty of time to develop. Clean neck in to well set shoulders. Good angles on him front and rear. Body developing well with good overall proportions. Topline level just needs to find his feet on the move to complete the picture.

3rd Forester’s Northern Light of Darkmoor (Imo Deu)

JD (2)

1st Amscot Air Apparent. BD. BIS.

This is a very smart young man, so much to like about him. Very clean in outline with correct overall proportions. I liked his head piece, masculine expression with a lovely kind eye and good tan. Clean through the neck into a well-made front. Standing on well boned legs with super feet. Shoulders are well set with a good return of upper arm. Correct depth to chest for his age. Body well-made and ribbed up. Level topline with a good finish to his croup. Quarters well developed, moderately angled, not overdone in any way. Moved out well with a good action and footfall. I think he is a really promising youngster. Delight to award him Best Dog and later Best in Show

2nd Forester’s Northern Light of Darkmoor (Imp Deu)

This boy has a lovely type about him, just at the in-between stage and not as developed as the winner. Head is of good shape with a kind eye. Good through the neck into a well-made front assembly, needs to tighten a shade in elbow. Good depth to chest for his age. Legs are well boned and feet good. Correct overall body proportions just a shade soft in topline today. Moved out well once he got his act together.

1st Amscot Air Apparent

GD (2)

1st Clos Erasmus Black Business of Lochansvue (Imp Rus)

This young man presented a pleasing outline. Head still developing at the moment, I wouldn’t want it any stronger. Has a firm neck into a well-set shoulders with a good lay-back. Front straight, legs well boned. Needs to drop into his front but correct for his age. Body proportions correct, ribs springing as they should and loin firm, held his topline well. Quarters well developed with stifles well bent. Moved out well in profile just needs to tighten in front.

2nd Gailech Ngalyod

Nice type of dog but needs to fill his frame which he will do as he matures up. Head is a little strong in back skull for my taste. Well-made throughout with a good topline and overall finish. Legs are well boned and feet oval. Good action on the move but he lost his topline a little today.

PGD (2, 1)

Nice type of dog, head is masculine with a pleasing expression. Well-made throughout with a good topline and overall finish. Good front assembly on him, shoulders well laid back and well-proportioned in body. Ribs well sprung. Quarters well made with a good bend of stile. He excelled on the move, has both carriage and presence. Super in profile. Presented in fabulous coat and condition, well handled.

2nd Liric Just The Ticket

This chap looked smart standing but didn’t have the movement of the winner especially as he came towards me. Standing he has a clean outline, masculine in head and expression. Neck firm, front construction is OK, but I would like a shade more lay-back of shoulder. He has good depth to chest. Ribs well sprung, a tad soft in topline Quarters well developed.

3rd Balnakeil Beinn Corradail of Blairbelles

OD (3, 1)

1st Ir Sh Ch Ladysdale Scottie McGregor

This chap looked smart standing but was not as tidy as I wanted as he came towards me. Standing he has a clean outline, masculine in head and expression. Neck firm. Front construction is good with a decent lay-back of shoulder. He has good depth to chest. Ribs well sprung, just a little long in loin and not as firm in topline on the move. Quarters well developed.

2nd Yennadon Benriach JW ShCEx

Very different to the winner, a smaller more compact dog, he is well balanced. Pleasing masculine head and expression although I would prefer a darker eye. He has a good outline on the stack, not quite the angles of the winner but is still balanced. Good depth to chest and spring of rib, moderate quarters which are well muscled. In good goat and condition. Moved out well but needs a little more front extension to complete the picture.

VD (2)

1st Rhum Night Legend ShCM VW. BVD. BVIS.

This chap won the class on outline and movement. A really nice type of dog, I would like a little more width in foreface, but his head is masculine with a kind expression. I like his overall shape, good angles front and rear, shoulders well set. He stands on well boned legs and good feet. Ribs well sprung and firm through the loin. Decent bend of stifle on him. Shown in super condition, his coat was gleaming. Moved out well to take the class and later Best Veteran in Show, congratulations and thank you for bringing him.

2nd Lachmor Serendipity for Siochial (Imp HRV)

Well-made boy, belies his years. I liked his headpiece, which is masculine. He is well made, clean in neck, would like a shade more lay back in shoulder. Stands on well boned legs. Good depth to his chest, ribs well sprung and firm in loin. Moved covering the ground well but not quite the drive of the winner today.

FTD (1)

1st Yennadon Reiss SGWC

This boy was in fabulous condition for his age and he moved round the ring like a train. He was just full of breed type. He was one of the best movers in the whole entry and fit as a fiddle, a real credit to his owner. His head is pleasing and that touch of grey just made him look distinguished, He is well made, clean in neck into well placed shoulders. Body of good proportions, moderate quarters. In super coat and condition. A credit to his owner, thank you for bringing him.

A cracking little lady with a lot to like about her, good in head with a pretty expression, still needs to finish but will do that over time. Plenty of substance about her at this age. Well made with balanced angles front and rear, level topline. Clear tan markings. Really good on the move with accurate footfall. Pleased to make her my Best Puppy in Show, should have a bright future ahead of her. Will follow her career with interest.

A promising puppy, not as forward as the winner but has all the essentials and everything in the right place. Her head is well made for her age with a good dark eye. She has clean line, neck in to shoulder good, decent front assembly on her. Body well made for her age, held her topline well. Good bend of stifle. Moved out well, unlucky to meet the winner. Good overall size and shape on this lady, she is feminine in head with a pleasing expression. I liked her for overall construction, she has good angulation front and rear. Stands on well boned legs and neat feet. Body well-made and well bent stifles. Not as fluid as the winner today on the move, she needs a bit more confidence which she will get with practice.

PGB (3, 1)

1st Ordett Love Me Do ay Keaswood JW

Well-made bitch who presented a clean picture on the stack with good overall balance. Feminine in head, enhanced by a good eye to give a pleasing and beautiful expression, would like a tad less in back skull. Neck into shoulders was super with shoulders well-placed. Good front make-up, well boned legs and depth to chest. Body well made, ribs well sprung and a firm loin. Topline level and tail set correct. Quarters well developed, stifles well bent and short from hock to heal. Good, well-defined tan markings. Moved out well. Reserve Best Bitch.

1st Pantehr Bad Medicine Dulmaur (Imp Pol)

Lovely type about her and she has a beautifully shaped head. Good through the neck into a decent front assembly. Stands on well boned legs and good feet. Depth to forechest, ribs well sprung. Stifles well bent and good muscle tone. Moved out well to win the class, plenty of drive. I liked this lady, but she just had a tendency to lose her top line on the stack today which cost her further honours.

2nd Ladysdale Special Edition NAF TAF

Another smart lady she has a lovely outline and overall balance and present the cleanest of pictures when stood. Head shape is pleasing, with a good finish to her foreface. Clean outline, neck in to shoulder good, would have liked her a big tighter in elbow, level topline and correctly set tail. Quarters well made with good angles which she used to give her sound action. Moved well in profile but lost fluidity on the up and down today.

Another grand lady 11½ years old and really enjoying her day out, nice type of bitch with clearly defined tan, just a little greyer. Lovely typical head on her with a super eye to give that feminine expression. Moved out well, true on the out and back. Really well handled to advantage. Just lost her topline a little on the move today.
