WORKING & PASTORAL BREEDS ASSOCIATION OF SCOTLAND CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

SATURDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2023

CANADIAN ESKIMO DOG: MISS ANNE BRYSON (INUKSHUK)

It was an honour to judge one of my favourite breeds at my first Championship Show appointment. A rare breed, I was humbled by my superb entry of 19 Canadians especially given the location north of the wall. I was sorry to learn of the troubles affecting some who wished to attend and wish all well and a speedy return to normal. There were some superb exhibits present and I was excited to see the quality in many young dogs coming through which bodes well for the future of this ancient sled dog in the UK. Many thanks to the committee, helpers, stewards and of course the exhibitors who made this all possible.

PUPPY DOG (3,1): Such sweet puppies with exemplary temperament, enjoying their time in the ring. I look forward to seeing them mature.

1. Atkins & Cunninghams’ QIMUGTA HENDRICKS 10 month old black and white male of super breed type. Good bone, substance and proportions throughout. Very good wedge shaped head with tapering muzzle of medium length. Correct scissor bite. Correct widely spaced obliquely set eyes. Still growing into his ears as expected at this age but they were thick and well furred with the required slight rounding to tips. Short muscular neck leading to well laid shoulders. Balanced rear angulation. Rear pastern vertical and strong. Legs straight on the stand, turning neither in nor out. Level topline with ideal length of firm, well muscled loin, only slight tuck up. Correct croup and tailset. Stands and moves well for age. BPD and BPIB. An exciting prospect!

2. Bailey, Burnside and Burnside’s AKNA HOLY GRAIL 10 month old sable and white male with good overall proportions and bone. Very good wedge shaped head. Superb ears displaying the short thick triangular shape with slightly rounded tips desired. Eyes perhaps a little closer at present but head is still to mature. Tapering muzzle of medium length. I loved his expression! Still quite narrow in front, but he’s only a puppy. Correct length of loin with only slight tuck-up as desired. Good bushy tail, set moderately high. I would prefer more bend to stifle. Nice large almost round feet, well arched. Not the muscling of 1 yet and much looser on the move, but nothing of concern and will mature to advantage. Hopefully he’ll feel more settled as he gains experience as he tended to roach his topline a little on the stand, just something to work on to polish his performance. Overall a promising young man!

JUNIOR DOG (1,1)

POSTGRADUATE DOG (2,1)

1. Bailey’s AKNA RUN SILENT RUN DEEP ** 4 year old sable and white male of good proportions and bone, showing the desired thick dense undercoat with hard stiff guard hairs. His mane has grown in and he oozes breed type. Good wedge shaped head, shape and size. Perfect ear shape, size and carriage. Dark eyes a little close perhaps but of lovely shape and expression. Correct tapering muzzle of medium length. Strong jaw. Neck short, straight and thick leading into well placed front angulation with equally super rear angulation. Tailset and carriage fine. Being picky would prefer a bit more arch to feet. Good width to chest, moderately sprung ribs and muscling good all round, especially at the shoulder. In side profile he moves beautifully as expected for his construction, but on the out and back he was not showing drive and somewhat circling his rear legs – did he need a poo perhaps? Such a shame as this let him down in the Challenge. One I’d love to see again.

OPEN DOG (4,1)

1. Byrne’s AAVUUTA QIMMIQ AKIAK (IMP CAN) BEL JCH IR JCH 22 month old dark grey and white male of super breed type. Well boned, thick dense undercoat and stiff guard hairs presented in show condition. Gorgeous broad, wedge shaped head of correct proportions and plane, eyes and ears correct, and a commanding expression. Great thick neck, short, straight and muscular. Super shoulder angulation. Good rear angulation, moderate turn to stifle. Rear pastern vertical and strong. Legs straight on the stand, turning neither in nor out. Strong topline, a firm loin and slight tuck up. Ideal tailset and carriage of thick bushy tail. Super shaped feet, thickly padded. Chest is well developed with moderately sprung ribs. Brisk powerful trot. A little narrow in the rear on the out and back but he is young and as he works and muscles up this should change. BD and BOB

2.Bailey’s AKNA KNIGHT’S TEMPLAR * 2.5 year old black and white male. I’ve written I adored this boy but he would not settle on the move to assess better and was gleefully kicking out in the left rear which cost him dearly. Super bone, a strong level topline. Short, thick, well muscled neck. Good depth of chest but not the width of 1 yet. He is still young and this should continue to develop. Well angulated all round and in particular, has superb rear angulation. Coat and mane as they should be. Would have liked more thickness to tail, but set and carried correctly. His head has matured nicely showing good breed type. Lovely dark brown obliquely set eyes, but being picky narrower in spacing than ideal, but short thick triangular well furred ears and close fitting lips on a tapered muzzle of medium length more than make up for this. RBD

3. Bailey’s AKNA ICE STATION ZEBRA **

PUPPY BITCH (2,2)

JUNIOR BITCH (0)

POSTGRADUATE BITCH (1,0)

1. McClements, Mathewson & Mathewson’s QIMUGTA PANDORA’S STAR FOR SNOWYNOOK 3 year old red and white bitch completely naked but in great body condition, well muscled throughout. Lovely wedge shaped head, so typey. Narrower in skull than males as expected for a CED bitch. Widely spaced obliquely set eyes, thick triangular ears with slightly rounded tips but a little tall. Thick muscular neck leading into well placed shoulders and good angulation front and rear. Forelegs straight but well developed. Rear legs parallel with strong vertical pasterns. Good length of leg. Excellent feet, large almost round, and thickly padded. Tailset good; tail carried down. Strong topline held on the move. Moved nicely once settled, with a powerful brisk trot. Would benefit from more ringcraft as nervous and hard to assess, but once she has gained her confidence (and coat) she will surely shine!

OPEN BITCH (6,3)

1.Atkins’ IR CH QIMUGTA MISS MARPLE IJ JUN CH 2 year old black and white bitch of good bone and substance, presented in lean hard working condition. Correct weatherproof coat, shorter than that of a male as expected. Excellent overall proportions with correct length to height ratio and length of leg, good depth and width to chest and strong topline. Neck straight, thick, and well muscled leading into good front angulation, with equally good rear. If being picky, would prefer a bushier tail but set and carried correctly. Rear pastern vertical and strong. Being picky, would prefer the feet a little rounder but they are well arched and the pads are thick and well furred. Very typey feminine head, meeting breed standard throughout, gorgeous expression – beautiful! Moved steady and with drive viewed from all angles. BB Pushed hard in the Challenge for BOB – very close and I’m sure would swap on another day.

2. Downey and Bailey’s AKNA CORDILLERA ** 3 year old almost entirely black and white bitch of very nice all round proportions demonstrating correct length to height ratio and good length of leg. Lighter in bone than 1st. Strong muscular neck. Superb angulation front and rear, with an especially good lay of shoulder, equal return and turn of stifle although would not wish any more. Rear pastern vertical and strong. Gorgeous feminine head with well spaced, obliquely set eyes, and erect, forward facing correctly proportioned ears set wide on head. An expression to melt. Mischievous girl and gave her handler a hard time especially on the move. Completely naked today, and as can happen with a youngster especially, has also dropped rather a lot of body condition. I would certainly like to see her again when back in coat and condition. RBB

3. Bryne’s INT/IR/NED CH HARPAN CHARLOTTE BAY IRJCH BJCH
