SOUTH EASTERN HOUND CLUB – PREMIER OPEN SHOW

Sunday 4th September 2022

Thank you to the officials and committee for inviting me to judge at this premier open show. The ground was even, rings spacious and nicely maintained. Thank you to my steward for keeping the ring running smoothly.

 Breed: Irish Wolfhound

Puppy ( 1, 0a)

1. Wilkinson’s, Rainster Eilex Among Hunacres: 10 month old bitch, with rangy yet feminine frame and curvy outline both standing and on the move. Needs time to settle in her movement but presents herself well. Good length of neck with shoulders set sloping, good length of second thigh and good width of stifle, hocks well let down. A promising youngster, it will be interesting to see her development. It was a pleasure to watch her being awarded Best Puppy in Show. BPIB, BPIS

Graduate (1,0a)

1. Campbell-Woodford’s, Kilmacduagh Aednat: Mature bitch presenting a feminine head with gentle expression, nice dark eye and dark pigment, correctly carried rose ears. Nice length of neck and shoulders well laid back. Good muscle and length of second thigh, with well let down hocks. Movement was easy and active, sound and balanced. Carried her tail a little high on the move which spoiled her overall outline.

Open (3,1a) :

1. Taylor & Lynch’s Gaeltarra Eireann Watson: Upstanding and commanding dog presenting masculine yet graceful outline. Masculine head with rose shaped ears of correct size and texture. Gentle expression framing nice dark eye and dark pigmentation. Nicely arched neck of good length and muscle leading to nice lay back of shoulder. Muscular thighs and good length of second thigh, good bend and width of stifle with hocks well let down. The foundation of the hound, his feet are well arched and aid in supporting this powerful frame. Nicely presented in good harsh coat of correct texture. Easy and active movement with nice extension both front and rear. BOB

2. Cramphorn’s, Yelxba Victoria ShCm: 8 year old bitch who really represented the breed proudly as a veteran. Movement was sound and easy, not as driven or active but to be expected considering her age. Feminine head with nice dark eye and gentle expression. A nicely put together bitch in good condition and correct harsh coat. Held her feminine outline on the move and was sound both coming and going. RBOB

Breed: Dachshund (Smooth)

Puppy (1, 0a)

1. Marsh & Jones’s, Marshwick Hope and Glory: A nicely put together Chocolate and Tan puppy with free-flowing movement and long stride that was well driven from the rear. Outline presented a compact, well-muscled body with good ground clearance and defiant head carriage held on good length of neck, yet oozed femininity. Nicely ribbed back and slight arch over the loin. A very promising youngster. It was thrilling to see this young puppy hold her own in the main group as she was shortlisted to the final 7, later going on to be awarded Reserve Best Puppy in Show. BOB, BPIB, Res Best Puppy in Show

Graduate (1, 0a)

1. Valentine’s, Amlida Tamora to Tiffwazz: Black and Tan bitch, compact with good ground clearance. Would have preferred more width at the rear as I felt she lacked in drive on the move.

Open (3,0a)

1. Valentines’s, Tiffwazz Robin: Black and Tan bitch, compact, well-muscled and good ground clearance and nicely ribbed back. Conical head with nice dark eye and gentle expression. Took some time to settle but moved freely with nice extension both front and rear without spoiling her outline. RBOB

2. Marsh & Jones’s, Marshwick Black Princess: Black and Tan bitch Similar type to the 1st with feminine features. Movement was sound and free-flowing and driven from the rear with nice extension. Sadly on the day she did not present a compact and muscular outline and needed to gain a little more fitness. After placing I was informed that she had recently returned to the ring after a litter, so I am sure in time she will regain her shape and muscle.

3. Chapman-Reith’s, Wanderhund Lets Celebrate for Hayvenhund JW

Breed: Dachshund (Long)

Open (4,2a)

1. Sutton’s, Kindeace Texas Tornado at Damai: A commanding red dog that held himself well both standing and on the move, presenting the outline I like of a Dachshund. Nothing overdone and beautifully balanced with front angulation and forechest that show off the Keel and complement a powerfully muscled rear. Masculine head with kind expression, Clean neck of good length and dark pigment showing off a masculine head. Coat in excellent condition, flat and not obscuring his outline. Sound, free and flowing movement coming and going, with long stride and extension in both front and rear. Although didn’t have the drive all of the time as that of the 2nd I was impressed with his easy and sound action and the glimpses of drive he showed when something more exciting caught his attention. I couldn’t deny this superb lad the honour of being awarded with the Womack Tankard for being the Best Standard Dachshund. Not letting it get to his head, it was a joy to watch him step it up a gear in a strong main group to be awarded group 3 after using that drive to full advantage, I knew he had hidden away as soon as he had a larger audience. BOB & Group 3.

2. Clarke’s, Tekalhaus The Excelsior: Not much between these two quality dogs. A nicely matured Red dog with masculine head and kind expression, Dark pigment with correct flat coat that was presented in excellent condition. Movement was sound and free flowing, however lacked the extension and stride of that of the 1st on the day. I also preferred the front angulation of that of the 1st.

Breed: Dachshund (Wire)

Post Graduate (4,2a)

1. Rowe’s, Boloria’s Aramis: 3 year old chocolate wild boar dog presenting compact and well-muscled outline with good ground clearance and well ribbed back. Free flowing movement that was sound both coming and going. Powerfully driven from the rear with good width throughout. Coat in nice harsh condition, ears could be neater. Felt that he lost his drive a bit in the challenge, but presented better reach than that of the 2nd in Open to be awarded RBOB

2. Apps’s, Calicor Just Me: 2 year old Red dog with lovely dark pigment and dark eye set in masculine head with kind expression. Nicely ribbed back with good ground clearance. Feet could be tighter. Not as powerfully driven in the rear as that of the 1st

Open (4, 2a)

1. Rowe’s, Ch Boloria Nice’N Spicy JW: 23 month Wild Boar bitch, nicely ribbed back, good ground clearance and presenting a compact and well-muscled outline both standing and on the move. Sound and free-flowing movement that was powerfully driven from the rear. Presented in good harsh coat, a feminine package that commanded and used the ring well. BOB

2. Robinson & Howlett’s, Skyswift Tennessee Honey: 3 year old Wild Boar dog, compact and well-muscled outline but not the ground clearance as that of the 1st. Substantial masculine frame, presented in good harsh coat. Free-flowing movement and powerfully driven. called in for RBOB challenge but I felt he lacked the front extension when on the move of that of the 1st in PG.
