Gundog Club Of North Wales

GUNDOG CLUB OF NORTH WALES PREMIER OPEN SHOW

20th NOVEMBER 2022

A pleasure to have the opportunity to judge at this very well organised show. I very much appreciated the friendly welcome from the Club's Officers & Committee, the generous sporting behaviour of the exhibitors and the quality of the dogs brought for my opinion.

SPANIEL (WELSH SPRINGER):

I feel fortunate to have had a good numerical entry that was full of quality, which was reflected in my BOB going RBIS & my BPIB going BPIS, congratulations to you both!

PUPPY (2)

1st - Holland's FERNDEL STARSHINE OVER FLATCHARM, 7 months feminine B, brimming with confidence & happy temperament, presents a neat outline with everything in proportion, well boned throughout, pretty & well balanced head with a dark eye & melting expression, long neck leading to well laid-back shoulder, straight forelegs & good width of chest, neatest of feet, deep brisket & strong in couplings, excellent width & strength in hindquarters for her age, all topped off with a beautiful rich red coat, moved very well, especially in front, just needs to tighten behind, lots of promise for the future, BPIB, delighted to learn she was later awarded BPIS

2nd - Thomas' TIGERROCK SHAKE DA ROOM, 7 months D, well-built & masculine in outline with good balance throughout for a baby, rather over-awed by his first show appearance & not showing himself off in the same way as 1, difficult to get hands on to assess him but I could see & feel enough to see that he has quality, he has a beautiful well-proportioned head & dark eye, enough length & strength in neck, not as straight as 1 in front & feet have yet to tighten, excellent depth of brisket & spring of rib leading to strong & short couplings, slight arch over loin, when he started to settle a little more his power in his well-muscled hindquarters showed in his driving rear movement

JUNIOR (4, 1 abs)

1st - Graham's DON'S BOLD AS BRASS WITH NYRILAM (IMP SWE) JW, 17 months D, everything about this young male is moderate, he is compact & symmetrical in outline, he has a good length of leg without being leggy, his solid dark jacket can trick the eye & make him look a little square, but his body does have enough length for balance, very well-shaped head with good length & depth of muzzle, dark enough in eye, long strong neck into very well angulated front assembly, plenty of forechest, stands on well boned straight legs & rounded feet, excels in depth of brisket & spring of rib, short-coupled, well muscled hindquarters, moved on a good driving stride

2nd - Lewis' KIDENOAN MARK UP VON TRANNON, 13 months D, liked this one for his leg length & proportions overall, presented a neat & compact outline, he has a lovely masculine head & charming expression, plenty of length of neck leading to well-laid shoulders, not quite the forechest or length of upper arm of 1, he has good bone & stands on strong rounded feet, he has good depth all through his body for his age & is short-coupled, he has a good width of thigh & a moderate bend of stifle, another who was well muscled & moved well, lacking a little in confidence today but he is still young, more forward in development than his very pretty & self-assured sister in 3rd

3rd - Moore's KIDENOAN MARK THAT BIRD

POST GRADUATE (2)

1st - Moore's KIDENOAN SECOND FLITE, 5 years B, sturdily built yet very feminine in outline, compact shape & nicely balanced overall, she has a pretty head of good proportions & a charming expression, appears thick-set in neck & over shoulders, but she is carrying a little bit of extra weight at present which does a great job of hiding them, plenty of forechest, well-laid shoulders, good length of leg balanced nicely with her body length, very deep in brisket, well sprung ribs, short coupled with deep flanks, slight arch over a firm loin, she is very well muscled in hindquarters, she is steady & effortless on the move, her ever-wagging tail testament to her happy temperament & willingness to please

2nd - Thomas' TIGERROCK VIVRE DUNE PRIERE, 22 months D, better weight & cleaner outline than 1, but was not completely happy today & giving his owner a hard time which was such a pity, he has a handsome masculine head with a dark expressive eye, good length of neck, excellent lay of shoulder & return of upper arm, strongly boned legs, feet could be tighter & rounder, great depth to his brisket & well sprung ribs, short coupled & strong in flank, correct slight arch over loin, nicely angulated stifles, plenty of strength in hindquarters, he was more composed on the move than when stood, showing a good powerful stride, just needs to relax to show off his many attributes

OPEN (3)

Three lovely bitches in this class

1st - Graham's SH CH NYRILAM TELLING TALES JW, 18 months B, very well developed for her age, such a lovely neat & compact shape, she has everything in proportion & is so feminine without losing any strength, she has a beautiful balanced head with a lovely dark eye, long neck & well angulated front assembly, plenty of forechest, straight forelegs & tidy feet, she is very well bodied with depth throughout, well sprung ribs, strongly-coupled, firm topline, moderate bend of stifle, powerful hindquarters, for me her owner moves her a little too fast, but when moved again at a slightly slower pace her clean straight front action & rear drive are readily apparent, pleased to learn she was later awarded RBIS

2nd - Moore's BRENT OYSTER BAY, 23 months B showing great maturity, like 1 she has great body properties & balance giving her a typical & very pleasing outline, she has the prettiest of heads & a delightful expression, enough neck into well laid shoulders, stands on well-boned legs & strong rounded feet, she has great depth of brisket & very well sprung ribs, strong all through body with short strong flanks, moderate bend of stifle & wide thighs, her overall shape further enhanced by a correct topline, moved freely on a good stride, just preferred forechest & return of upper arm of 1, close decision & would have been my RBOB had this award been on offer

3rd - Williams' CRIMICAR STAND BY ME FOR BODLON

SPANIEL (IRISH WATER):

PUPPY (1)

1st - Williamson's FINCHSMILL SECRET SURPRISE, 6 months B, just a baby with plenty of time on her side, sweet feminine well-proportioned head with sufficient dome to skull & strength to muzzle, bright intelligent expression, eye dark enough for her age, enough length of neck to enable her to carry her head high, needs to develop & tighten in front, but has a promising compact outline with great body depth for her age & big ribs, her hindquarters are well made & correctly angulated, she is short-coupled & has a firm level topline, she stands on rounded feet, typical "all legs & wings" movement as might be expected, but she is happy & outgoing, which at this age is half the battle, BOB & BPIB

RETRIEVER (CHESAPEAKE BAY)

All exhibits present today had harsh oily top coats & dense woolly undercoats, & I understand from their owners that they are all working gundogs, staying true to this Breed's strong working ethic.

POST GRADUATE (2):

1st -Coppin & Davies-Jones' PIXIESROCK QUEEN OF HEARTS AT ELWISTONE, 3 years brown B with a neat balanced outline, very feminine head with proportionate skull & muzzle, correct ear size & set, good eye colour gives her an appealing expression, strong & muscular in neck, enough forechest & bone, nicely laid shoulder, would just prefer a little more length in upper arm, lighter than 2 in frame with more tuck-up, but she still possesses plenty of depth in brisket, ribs are well sprung, firm in topline & strongly coupled, her hindquarters are moderately angulated, would prefer more width of thigh but she is well muscled & when she moves she is active & light on her feet

2nd - Rigby's CHESEPI ULYSSES, mature & solidly built 6 years D, strong masculine head, but not quite the balance & clean outline of 1, nevertheless he has a gentle expression showing his kindly nature, powerful neck leading to well laid shoulders, upper arm is a little short but he does have good depth & width to his forechest, doesn't really show himself off standing & appears rather heavy in front especially over shoulders, strong bone & feet, deep in brisket, good spring of rib & well coupled with deep flanks, slight tuck-up, moderate bend of stifle, well muscled & broad enough in thigh, came alive on the move showing great enthusiasm, willingness to please & devotion to his owner

LIMIT (1)

1st - Rigby's CHESEPI WACO, strong, well-balanced & powerfully built 4 years brown D, nicely proportioned masculine head with a pleasing clean muzzle & foreface, liked his eye colour & shape, correctly sized & shaped ears, just inclined to fly them far back on his head which can give him a slightly odd expression, strong in neck & forechest, well boned & straight forelegs, liked his front assembly, stands on well-made feet, good depth through body & spring of ribs, strong couplings, firm topline, just drops away a bit too much over croup, slight tuck-up. well-angulated stifles, well developed & muscled thigh, happy & outgoing, moved steadily & powerfully, would have been my RBOB had this award been on offer

OPEN (1):

1st - Coppin & Davies-Jones' DALLANDOR JOCASTA, unmistakeably feminine but strong & workmanlike 6 years ash B, liked her head for its shape & proportions, well placed eyes of good colour & shape giving her an appealing intelligent expression, fairly small high-set & well-carried ears, well-balanced in outline, she possesses a super forechest & a well-muscled neck of good length into a well-angulated front assembly, she has plenty of bone & stands on strong hare feet, she has depth in brisket & flank with slight tuck-up, ribs are well sprung, strong couplings, well bent stifles, powerful broad hindquarters set slightly higher than withers, moved with energy & power on an effortless stride, preferred her expression over Limit winner for BOB
