Midland Chihuahua Club

Midland Chihuahua Club Open Show

4 September 2022

Chihuahuas (Smoothcoat)

I was very honoured to be asked by the committee to judge, and huge thanks to them for their exceptional hospitality. I also thank the exhibitors who accepted my decisions with grace and dignity. I found all dogs to be clean and well presented, and mouths on the whole were good, with the vast majority displaying clean and well cared for teeth in addition to correct scissor bites. My steward, Emily, assisted by her mum Amanda, did a sterling job at keeping everything running smoothly. Emily’s fantastic socks certainly made my day!

Minor Puppy Dog (5, 2)

1. Halls’ Jorazan Quincy Quirky Sox, 9-month-old, fawn. A happy little man who trotted round the ring with the confidence of one much older. He has a pretty head with large flaring ears and expressive eyes. A level top line that is kept level both on the move and when stacked. A straight front with rear drive that powers sound and accurate movement. It was this, and his showmanship, which won him the class. He maintained his energy and enthusiasm throughout the challenge to win BPD, RBD and BPIB. Delighted to see him then awarded BPIS and he was still showing his socks off in the BIS challenge.

2. Stading’s Stadmeyer Aramis, 7-month-old, cream. Another one pretty in head with well placed ears and large dark eyes. Nice apple dome with good length of muzzle. Still quite a raw puppy; I preferred the movement and balance of 1, but once this young man has matured and developed more body, he should do well. Awarded RBPD.

3. Halls’ Jorazan Roody Red Sox

Puppy Dog (3, 0)

1. Halls’ Jorazan Quincy Quirky Sox. As MPD.

2. Stading’s Stadmeyer Dashing Dexter, 9-month-old, blue fawn. Handsome boy, up to size. Half brother to 2 in MPD, he is similar in head properties, but he is more mature than his little brother. Holds his top line on the move, stands four square when stacked and strides out well on the move, but I preferred the movement of 1.

3. Halls’ Jorazan Roody Red Sox

Junior Dog (4, 1)

1. Humphreys’ Amarantos Blue Moon, 18-month-old, blue fawn. A little dog that I found interesting. In the class, he was spirited. So much so that it was difficult to assess his movement, and I did not think initially that he would be my winner. On the table, I found him a sound dog to go over, with a typical apple dome head and a muzzle of correct length, large flaring ears and well-set dark eyes. He has a level top line and nicely set on sickle tail. Towards the end of the class he settled and I was able to observe accurate movement with plenty of drive. He then went on to improve as the challenges went on – becoming more and more settled and less exuberant. That won him BD and BOB, and then RBIS in the challenge. Undoubtedly one to watch.

2. Hollister’s Copymear Pocket Rocket at Hollichi NAF, 15-month-old, red. A very pretty little boy with lovely expression. I liked his substance and balance, and his movement was sound fore and aft. A nice friendly temperament but I preferred the muzzle and body length on 1.

3. Slavinec’s Voxel Ux Sacha At Charonchi (Imp Fra) TAF

Novice Dog (2, 1)

1. Halls’ Jorazan Roody Red Sox, 9-month-old, gold. Litter brother to winner of MPD and PD. He’s a sweet little boy who lacks the confidence of his littermate. When on the move he maintains a level top line and shows nice overall balance. He has nicely flared ears and well placed and sized eyes. He lacks the well-defined stop and strong underjaw of his brother, and because of his lack of confidence doesn’t demonstrate movement as accurately or refined as it could be. I think with more time to develop and mature, there may be more to see from this boy.

Post Graduate Dog (2, 0)

1. Smith’s Lemaritz Mastermind at Nayelichi, 4-year-old, blue fawn. Lovely expressive large eyes with typical flaring ears set on correctly. Pleasing turn of stifle and body of good substance, and well set on tail held in the correct shape. Would have preferred a little more neck, but this little man has good rear movement that powers his drive.

2. Halls’ Jorazan Top Gun Flyer JW, 20-month-old cream dog. Similar head properties to 1, with a nice straight front, but I preferred the rear movement and stifle of 1. Good substance to body, shows well and attentive to his handler. Strode out with purpose and holds his level topline on the move.

Limit Dog (1, 0)

1. Smith’s Moltobello Pride and Joy of Hulawawas, 5-year-old fawn. What I particularly like about this boy is a super straight and level topline and very accurate movement, powered from the rear. He has a very good bite, and a correct sickle tail which he holds well. He displays balance and substance and in profile looks lovely. I would have preferred a little more refinement in the head, but he has large flaring ears and typical expressive eyes.

Minor Puppy Bitch (1,0)

1. Alexander’s Moltobello Once in a Blu Moon at Alderxena, 6-month-old blue fawn. This was her first show. A very raw puppy who needs time to gain confidence and showmanship. Very nice turn of stifle and well bodied for a youngster, she is compact and well balanced. Pretty head with flaring ears and expressive eyes. When settled she displays a level topline but again needs time for her movement to settle as she finishes skeletal growth.

Puppy Bitch (3, 0)

1. Hollister’s Hollichi Ren’s Legacy, almost a year old, blue fawn sable. Small and dainty, and won the class on movement, which was the best in the class. She has a very pretty head, apple domed with large eyes that are not protruding, and well set on ears, which she used well. Her muzzle is a nice length and slightly pointed; neither too long nor too short. Liked her dentition, a correct scissor bite. Nice reach of neck. Awarded BPB and RBPIB.

2. Stading’s Stadmeyer Alice, 10-month-old blue fawn. Larger than 1, and slightly longer in body, which I actually preferred, but she didn’t quite have the showmanship of 1. Apple dome head with pleasing eyes and well-set ears. Straight in front, and firm topline, but I preferred the turn of stifle and head properties on 1. Awarded RBPB.

3. Slavinec’s Minx Tiara at Charonchi

Junior Bitch (1, 0)

1. Slavinec’s Charonchi Sugar Krush, 10-month-old gold and white parti colour. I liked the overall shape and balance of this little girl, and although she was very interested in what was on the floor, which made her movement difficult to assess at times, when she did, she moved well. She has correct dentition, is well pigmented, and demonstrates correct eyes and ears, although I think she has a little more maturing to do in the head. Her muzzle is of good length and slightly pointed. She was a little nervous and needs to develop her confidence.

Novice Bitch (2, 1)

1. Slavinec’s Minx Tiara at Charonchi, 10-month-old red sable and white. This was a seen dog who came third in Puppy Bitch. She has pleasing head properties with correct dentition and a good muzzle length. She is a feisty little girl who likes to announce to everyone that she is there. She has a well set on tail with a sickle shape. Her movement can be a little difficult to assess as she is quite exuberant on the move, but there is no doubting that she likes to be in the show ring. She has a lovely firm and level topline. I would have preferred a little more substance, and a little more length in body.

Graduate Bitch (4, 1)

1. Hollister’s Copymear Cleopatra at Hollichi NAF, 6 months old, fawn. A pretty head with nice reach of neck. She had the best showmanship in the class and was keen to show off her qualities. Lovely expressive eyes and well set and used ears. Correct tail set and shows pleasing substance and balance. Turn of stifle is ok, strides out well, but a little close behind today. A nice straight front and neat feet.

2. Slavinec’s Charonchi Sugar Krush. As NB.

3. Smith’s Valenchino Delicate of Hulawawas

Post Graduate Bitch (2, 0)

1. Smith’s Moltobello Miss Myrtle of Hulawawas, 20-month-old tricolour. This is a dog I have judged before. What I really like about her is her construction and movement. She is truly four square and moves with more accuracy and drive than most. She displays breed type with an apple dome skull and nicely pointed muzzle which is not in any way overdone. Her top line is spirit level, and her tail displays the correct sickle shape and is carried with poise. However, to see her on the move is a joy to behold. She has the required brisk, forceful action but she moves in such a way that looks effortless, a gait that can only be achieved when the dog is correctly constructed. Awarded BB and considered for BOB but she sadly lost her ‘sparkle’ in the challenge and, whilst she moved impeccably, just lost her edge. Awarded RBOB.

2. Entwistle’s Dorenty’s Daisy Chain, 18-month-old, blue fawn. A very pretty little girl that I liked a lot, but sadly she is a little on the nervous side, which let her down. She has an excellent bite, nice firm topline, good turn of stifle and moves well. Her head displays a nice apple dome, with expressive eyes, well set on ears and good pigment. Nice length of body to give an overall balanced profile with body slightly longer than legs. If she could just gain a bit more confidence, I am sure she would do well.

Open Bitch (1, 0)

1. Davis’ Chibull Boom Shakalak, 3-year-old, cream. A very pretty little girl who has great showmanship and wagged her little tail the whole time. She has a pretty head with apple dome, well defined stop and good length of muzzle. She carries her top line well, striding out with drive and demonstrates accurate movement. Good turn of stifle and straight front. Nice overall balance, compact, but in proportion with correct body length to leg length. When challenging for BB, I preferred the movement on the BB winner. Awarded RBB.

Veteran Bitch (1, 0)

1. Smith’s Valenchino Catching Fire at Diamonchi VW, 8-year-old, fawn sable. A lovely veteran, well-constructed and well balanced, giving a nice profile. Good turn of stifle, straight in the front, and a firm and level topline. Correct sickle shape tail. Good apple dome to the head with lovely eyes and well-set ears. She moves well but didn’t display the drive today that I have seen in her before. Awarded BVIB.
