All Gundog Breeds & Gundog Group – judge Kath Holt (Bethryn)

Firstly I would like to say how lovely it was to finally judge at the lovely show. Due to COVID we have had a couple of false starts. Thank you to June and her hard working committee for putting on such an enjoyable show. Also a big thank you to all the exhibitors who braved the heat to bring their lovely dogs for my opinion. I was told before I came to the South West that there were some top quality dogs and I can honestly say there were lots of them came under me today. I thotoughly enjoyed my day!

AV Gundog Veteran (11,3)

What a wonderful class to start off the day!? A class full of golden oldies with each one being a credit to their owners. It was a scorching hot day but not one of these veterans let the weather stop them strutting their stuff.

1. Fenn Willowsbrook The Hairy Biker at Jandeburn ShCM VW Golden Ret. This 10 ½ year old headed up this class of wonderful veterans. He was shown in super condition and in immaculate coat. A masculine head with the most melting of expressions. Good earset. Strong neck into well placed shoulders. Good straight well boned legs and tight well-padded feet. Moved around the ring with such elegance and purpose, keeping his topline. Delighted to see him take RBVIS

2. Osman Bournehouse Star Gazer at Marissolo ShCM English Setter. Another stuuning dog shown in glorious blue belton coat. Masculine without being too coarse. Strong neck into well laid shoulder. Shown in super condition. He moved with such a setter wag around that ring and proved what a happy boy he was.

Welsh Spinger Spaniel

Limit (2,0)

1. Nicoll Benoveor Sail on to Antreth JW 16m old dog. Masculine head that is still developing. Correct shaped eye of good colour. Correct sissor bite. Strong neck into well laid back shoulder and good length of upper arm. Straight front with sufficient bone. Good depth of body and well sprung rib. Moved true away and back with lovely side profile gait. RBOB

2. Morgan Benoveor Endless Love 16m old bitch, litter sister to 1. Finer throughout that her brother but feminine bitch with good straight front. Moved ok keeping her topline.

Open Dog (4.1)

1. Attwood Ir Sh Ch Kylowen Drym SHCM Mature dog shown in a rich red jacket you could see your face in. Masculine head without being coarse. Really well bodied and super muscled rear quarters. Balanced dog on the stack and well angled front and rear enabling him to move around the ring keeping a level topline and covering the ground well. BOB

2. Nicoll Benover the Guardian for Antreth. 7 year old dog shown in the veteran class. Lighter made than 1 but he could not be denied his place in this class based on his super movement round the ring. He just floated around to gain 2nd place in this strong class.

Open Bitch (4,1)

1. Attwood Kylowen Demelza Another 7 year old bitch shown in the veteran class. So feminine in head with lovely dark eye. Straight legs and well boned. Strong hindquarters. Well bodied with well sprung ribs. Shown in super red rich coat. Out moved her younger class mates to win this class.

2. Reynolds Benover Can’t Buy Me Love Larger build than 1 but still feminine to look at. Another shown in super rich red jacket. Well angled front and rear. Well off for forechest with elbows tight into the body. She just didn’t have the va va voom of the winner when going round the ring in this heat.

ESS

Open (3,1)

1. Kibby Trimere Turn Back Time 14m old bitch with lots to like. Tri bitch who is heavier in the head than her litter sister who was 2nd to her today. Her eye needs to darken, which it will given time. She has a strong arched neck into lovely lay back of shoulder and good length of upper arm. Sufficient bone and stands on tight feet. Well off for forechest. Needs to drop a little into her middle piece but has strong rear quarters. She excels on the move where she shows true movement away and back with a magnificent side profile gait. She will only get better and will definitely be one to watch out for. BOB Gundog G3

2. Kibby Trimere Taylor Maid at Pinhays. Litter sister to 1 and a lot of her attributes apply to this youngster. She has the more feminine head of the two but not quite the substance of her sister. She also benefits from the super angles and strong rear quarters that enable the powering around the ring with such a wonderful forward reach and drive from behind.

Cocker Spaniels

Graduate (4,0)

1. Dean Sandlauga Sherberts Pip Pretty headed b/r bitch. Lovely strong neck into good lay back of shoulders. She is not the largest framed bitches but is so balanced throughout. Shown in beautiful condition. Her movement won the class as she merrily bussled around the ring in a typical cockery way. RBOB

2. Miller Edeeswarren Moonlight Certainly gave her handler a run for her money, this 10m bitch shown in rich red coat. Super neck and shoulders. Well off for bone. Well angled front and rear. When settled showed superb movement. BP

Open Dog (2,1)

1. Salmon Crimicar Indigo Eclipse B/r dog with a super head and kind eye. Maculine throughout without being too overdone. Well angled front and rear. Super forechest and depth of body. Moved well with strong driving hocks. Shown in lovely coat and condition[

Open Bitch (1,0)

1. Cachel Pop the Question to Meloneras Feminine b/r bitch with a dark kind eye. Superb neck and shoulders. Lovely depth of body. Short coupled and so well balanced. She may have been a cocker but she absolutely owned the ring and filled it as she floated around with her merry cocker tail and hocks driving her from behind. She was the total package. Italian Spinone

1 Kruglow Amberelle Rosanna O/R bitch with feminine head and kind eye. Strong neck into well laid shoulder. Correct gentle rise from behind withers to loin. Moved well and maintained topline. BOB

2 Middleton Tolosa Elba 10m Orange dog. Immature puppy but has lots to like. Masculine head. Strong neck into well laid shoulder. Moved well with a happy gait. Lovely temperament Res BOB & BP

English Setter

Graduate (2,1)

1 Allen Arlofrana Sugar n Spice at Lynwood Blue belton & Tan bitch with beautiful feminine head with beautiful dark kind eye. Well angled front and rear with sufficient bone. Moved well.ResBOB

Open (3,1)

1 Osman’s Bournehouse Star Gazer at Marissolo SHCM 2nd in Veteran Stakes class (see above for critique) and couldn’t be denied his place in this class. What a showman? He stood out in this class to win above his younger class mates. BOB

2 Allen Arlofrana Indiana Blue belton bitch. Different type to 1 who made a lovely balanced shape on the stack but just couldn’t match the movement of 1

Golden Retriever

Junior (2,1)

1 Coad Tinklersbroc Bon Bon 12m old dog. I wrote “Stunning handsome boy” and he is. He has the most melting expression with such a kind dark eye. Well set ears. Strong neck and fabulous forechest. Lovely depth of body and strong hindquarters. Shown in super coat and condition. Moved beautifully around the ring.

1 Thomas Santandore Blonde over Blue Mature dog. Masculine head with well set ears and eyes. Lovely kind expression. Well off for forechest. Balanced picture stacked. Moved well

2 Thomas Satandore Honesty Litter sister to 1 and much applies. She is feminine in head with a lovely dark eye. Sufficient bone. Moved well around the ring. Shown in lovely coat and condition

1 Fenn Chalksville Highlander at Jandeburn Masculine dog who was so balanced on the stack and on the move. Super bone with well padded feet. Deep in body with well sprung rib. He is not too tall or heavy but has enough substance. Moved true and steady to take the class

2 Thomas Santandore Blonde over Blue (see Graduate)

1 Fenn Chalksville Barregarrow at Jandeburn JW ShCM Lovely masculine boy. Well balanced. Strong jaws and lovely work in his head. Strong neck into well laid back shoulder. Straight fron and Lovely tight feet. Correctly placed tail. Well angled behind. Moved around the ring with a long free striding gait, driving from behind. Really liked this boy. BOB

Open Bitch (2,1)

1 Hutchinson Largymore Love Me Too of Trethellan Feminine bitch with beautiful kind expression. Lovely bone and stands on tight feet. Well off for forechest. Deep body. Maintained topline on the move. Moved ok but I think the heat got to her today. RBOB

Labrador Retriever

Graduate (8,2)

1 Kennett Magnavalleys Trebah Choc bitch Not heavy or overdone. Lovely head with strong jaws. Strong neck of good length into well placed shoulders. Well boned straight legs stood on round well padded feet. Correct “otter” tail carried well on the move.

2 Hosking Cornishwater Mountsbay Yellow bitch many of the same attributes apply to this bitch. I just preferred the overall balance of 1 but I am sure these can swap places.

3 Philpott Clarisview Primrose BP

1 Philpott Rossacre Spangles of Clarisview Yellow bitch Feminine bitch with beautiful head and expression. Strong neck and well laid shoulder. Standing on good straight, well boned legs and round well padded feet. Moved well around the ring. BOB

2 Hosking Cornishwater Mountsbay (see previous class)

1 Kennett Magnavalleys Cornishman ShCEX Black mature dog. Super handsome head of correct proportions. Stands on strong straight legs and well padded round feet. Lovely deep body. Used tail on the move and moved effortlessly around the ring keeping his topline. Res BOB

2 Philpott Rossacre Keno Veteran dog who really gave his younger class mate a run for his money.Super strong body and shown in lovely coat and condition. Moved well around the ring

Irish Setter

Graduate (6,1)

1 Beresford Jetsetter Wind of Dreams (Imp Rus) Very mature looking dog shown in a stunning red jacket. Is there anything that looks better than an Irish in full coat? Won this class on maturity. Correct head shape. Muscular neck into deep sloping shoulders. Deep chest with well sprung rib. Moved elegantly around the ring to win the class Res BOB

2 Coleman Camaling Rose Royale 9 month old puppy who was mature for her age. Lovely depth in body already with good straight legs . Moved well around the ring BP

1 Coleman Devacott Rose Creek at Camaling Mature bitch in gleaming chestnut rich red coat. So feminine in head with good ear set and strong jaw. Strong slightly arched neck into well laid back shoulder. Moved beautifully around the ring BOB Gundog G1

2 Roberts Sh Ch Jetsetter Cristalle to Polmennor Another stunning looking bitch. And preferred the head on this bitch. Again moved beautifully around the ring. She was just lacking in condition today and so was pipped at the post by 1.

1 Dee Melanitta Carelinus Masculine dog with correct wedge shaped head. Almond shaped eyes with alert expression. Strong neck into well laid shoulder. Deep chest, level topline. In good coat with good undercoat. Moved well BOB

2 Ward Melanitta Palmata JW Another mature dog with similar attributes to 1. Standing on stong straight legs and round tight feet. In lovely coat. Moved well RBOB

Pointer

Graduate (5,0)

1 Osman Cattistock Cosmos with Marissolo 10m old B&W dog. I wrote “absolutely stunning”! I loved this boy. The breed standard calls for a general appearance of “aristocratic” and this summed this boy up. The most gorgeous masculine head with beautiful dark eyes. Dished faced but moderate unlike some. Correct placed ears, strong jaws with correct scissor bite. Strong slightly arched neck into long sloping correctly placed shoulders. Straight front legs with super oval bone. Strong well muscled loin. Shown is such superb muscle and condition. A pointer can’t hide anything and boy this guy doesn’t need to! Moved beautifully around the ring. PG1 & delighted to see him take Res BPIS. I shall watch his career with interest

2 Phillips Pencaire Sheeran Another stunner who was very unlucky to meet 1. Super head of correct proportions. Deep well ribbed chest. Another with strong well muscled hindquarters. Moved beautifully around the ring. These were two lovely puppied.

1 Osman Fleurfield Firethorn at Marissolo ShCEx There may have only been two in this class but they were two beauties. This was the hardest decision of the day for me because 1 was as masculine as 2 was feminine. I was really splitting hairs. This B&W dog just pipped his class mate. Super head with such exquisite work in it. He had a beautiful dark eye, well placed ears, strong jaws with correct bite. Beautiful dish again not exaggerated in any way. Strong neck into correctly placed shoulders. Well sprung rib and deep body. Strong straight legs and beautiful feet. Again super muscle on this boy that enabled him to power round the ring with such a graceful demeanour. BOB Grp 2

2 Phillips Waterton Remember Me at Pencaire What can I say? I was honoured to be able to judge two lovely pointers. Orange & White bitch with the most feminine of heads. Again the work in her head was perfect with lovely eye, well set ears. Super strong neck into correct shoulders. Well sprung rib with deep body. Strong well muscled hindquarters. Moved beautifully around the ring Res BOB Winner of the Res BOB Gundog group

I was delighted to find out that my 1 and 2 in Open were the Sire of 1 and the Dam of 2.
