Judge Karen Powney

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge today. I had some lovely dogs to go over and some difficult decisions. A lovely big ring which was great for the dogs to show off their movement and a couple of very competent stewards who kept my ring running really well. Lunch although from the butty van was excellent quality and very tasty. I love this show for its atmosphere and it is great to be asked to judge here.

Irish Setter

Puppy (2,1)

1st Thendara Big Love (D) owned by Mrs D Milligan – Bott & Mr J Bott.

This lovely dog is still very much a baby at just under 10 months he is a very promising young boy. He will muscle up as he gets older, and this will finish of the overall picture. His movement while good in profile was a little loose coming and going but his overall shape and proportions are all there. His head is long and lean but not too narrow, black nose with wide nostrils, eyes dark and correctly shaped showing that kind intelligent expression that you want from this breed. Well boned legs with good tight feet. Good sloping shoulders which gave him the correct reach in front. I would have awarded him best puppy but was disappointed that they went home before the challenge and so could not award this.

Junior  (4,3)

1st Cafotaliena Joker and Queen (D) owned by Miss NC & Miss C Hardy.

This boy is stunning and at just 3 days over his first birthday is one to be watched. He is racy without being too fine, carried himself so well and although at times he gives his young handler grief he moves so well. He has a super head which is lean but not too fine course, oval head and lovely low ear set. That kind, intelligent expression that can only be achieved with a correct eye shape and colour and head shape. Nose black correct bite. Lovely muscle developing in his neck which has that slight arch set well into lovely sloping shoulders. Lovely straight topline held on the move. His movement was perfect and although he has a little more filling out to do and a little more muscle to come, he uses what he has well. Lovey rear angulation, well let down hock and good tight feet with well arched toes. Pleased to award him RBOB

2nd Thendara Big Love (D) owned by Mrs D Milligan – Bott & Mr J Bott.

Retriever (Golden)

Puppy (5,0)

1st Purbarn Friends Together (D) Owned by Mrs S Moore

He is a lovely well built boy who is just under 10 months old. Good head and shape to his nose, good feet. Not too long in loin. Correctly angulated and this showed in his movement. He does still have a bit of maturing to do but he is all there and has good type. Pleased to award him BPIB.

2nd Wemcrest Sound of Music (D) Owned by Mrs J & Mr R Chan

This 6 month old pup lost out today on maturity as he is still a little loose in his movement but he is all there otherwise. Head is gorgeous with correct ear set and eye. Not course but definitely a dog, not a bitch. Looks at you with that loving look. Well laid shoulders and good rear angulation. Correct tail set and good feet. Still very much a baby though I am sure he will mature really well.

3rd Haydengold Just A Rumour at Sunandair (D) Owned by Miss P Archer.

Junior (1,0)

1st Putjade Pumpkin Spice for Sybiton (B) Owned by Mrs M J Price

Beautiful pretty girl of just 13 months old . Correct head ear and eye. Good neck into well laid shoulders enough bone and good feet. Lovely coat of golden colour. Correct angulation and she moved well. Deserved the win even though she stood alone and please to award her RBOB despite her young age.

Post Graduate (4,0)

1st Wyllon Lost in Translation JW (D) Owned by Mrs S F Riley

This boy catches your eye for type and shape as soon as you see him. It took this really good dog to beat the Junior girl into second. He has a lovely head and eye, his ear is correct and his neck flows into his shoulders, with just that slight crest showing. He is well angulated fore and aft and has good bone. Feet round and tight and he moved so well although he did look like he wanted a bigger ring (ring was not tiny) and could go all day. Really pleased to award him BOB.

2nd 1st Putjade Pumpkin Spice for Sybiton (B) Owned by Mrs M J Price

Junior (1,0)

1st Amore of Ridsome (imp ITA) (B) Owned by Miss C A Point

What a beautiful girl with everything where you want it, was a pleasure to go over this 16 month old. You immediately see this girl is built to work she is solid and muscular and her coat which is so important in this breed was so correct, with short but thick curls and the undercoat present all over not just in patches. Head correct and colouring of nose and pigmentation all the same as coat colour. Well within breed hight and screamed breed type. Nose correct and ears small and close of sufficient thickness. Shoulders well laid and good return of upper arm. Rear angulation matching front and this showed on the move. Good workmanlike movement that was free and effortless. Although she stood alone it would have taken a very special dog to beat her. BOB
