Coventry & District Gundog Society (03/12/22)

My sincerest thanks to the committee for their invitation to judge at this very popular open show. Many thanks to The Pointer Club for supporting the breed entry, my 2 lovely stewards who kept my ring running like clockwork and to all of the exhibitors who entered. I hope you all enjoyed your day as much as I did!

Pointer Puppy (6,2)

An interesting class, all 4 youngsters were at very different stages in their development.

1) O’Neill’s, Tenshilling To Sir With Love. What a lovely start to my day! I fell head over heels for this very stylish orange/white bitch. On first glance, she is obviously curvaceous in shape and symmetrical in balance. She has the required strength in bone without losing her style and grace. Her head is correctly proportioned with plenty of work under the eyes and dark pigment all through which contributes to her kindly expression. Thin ear leathers of ample length. Her long neck cleanly flows into an excellent layback of shoulder and good length of upper arm with tight elbows and straight limbs. Strong topline with gradual slope and width over her quarters. Corresponding rear angulation with short hocks. Straight tail of correct length. She shows excellent co-ordination both going/coming while covering the ground well from the side showing great carriage of head and tail. Pushed my Open winners all the way in the challenge. Delighted to award her BPIB and to find out after judging that her class win secured the final point she needed for her JW, congratulations all round!

2) Webb’s, Tenshilling Jimmy Mack. A very age-appropriate orange/white male who needs time to mature all through. Masculine head with kindly expression but needs to develop more work around the eyes and cheeks. Reachy neck onto a good forehand. Short back with strong loin. Plenty of rear angulation with good length of tail. Needs time to firm up on the move but has it all there to grow into.

3) Klaiber’s, Sharnphilly Gingerbread.

Pointer Yearling (7,4)

1) Collins’, Collholme Angelique. A very middle-sized orange/white bitch. So curvy and honest in her overall appearance. Loved her head, ample width to skull, dark pigment and plenty of work around the eyes. Her angulation both fore/aft was balanced, showing width over her shoulders and haunches. Strong topline which flows through to her correct length of tail. Firm in elbow and hock on the move with eye-catching deportment on the go-round. Won the class on maturity at this stage.

2) Watkins’, Cupid’s Halo at Glenmaurangi. This black/white dog is just 12 months and was giving a lot away in maturity at this stage. However, he creates a most impressive picture on the stack with all the essentials to grow into. Masculine head with excellent width & shape to skull and plenty of work with dark eyes and open nostrils. Long, sloping shoulders with strength in bone but not compromising his athleticism. Needs to deepen in brisket with strength in loin. Plenty of width over his rear with well bent stifles. Accurate going/coming for one so young with an impressive side gait and lashing tail. One to watch, would like to see him as the finished article.

3) Booth’s, Lundgarth Everest JW.

Pointer Graduate (5,3)

1) Collins’, Collhome Balthasar. Litter brother to my Yearling winner with many remarks that also apply. An obviously masculine orange/white without coarseness. Plenty of work in his head with well developed lips. Decent reach of neck with moderate but balanced angulation fore/aft. Plenty of body with strength in topline and loin. Good tail length but would prefer it to be straighter. Sound and easy mover from all angles. Won this class on his better body proportions.

2) Klaiber’s, Hawkfield Scandalous. This orange/white bitch is from a longer cast than 1. Really pretty head with lots of work and dark pigment. Straight bone with visible sinews. Excellent depth of brisket and length of foreleg. Prefer a shorter loin. Excellent bend of stifle and width over her rear. Goes with a lashing tail action and is sound from all angles.

Pointer Post Graduate (3,3)

Pointer Open Dog (4,0)

1) Oliver & Stilgoe’s, Teisgol Love Is In The Air. This orange/white male appealed greatly for his handy size, strength in bone and curvy shape. Well-proportioned head with plenty of stop and work around the eyes. Would not want him any broader in skull. Thin leathers of medium length. Balanced angulation both fore/aft with good depth to brisket and short loin. Quite an unassuming dog on the stack who came alive on the move demonstrating such breed-typical carriage of head and tail with an air of arrogance, maintaining absolute firmness of elbow and hock. Excellent presentation. Very pleased to award him RBOB in such a competitive entry, congratulations!

2) Philo’s, Tenshilling It’s My Party for Salmonmist JW. Another orange/white that possessed a curvaceous outline. A different style of head to 1 still possessing a kindly expression. Excellent reach of neck that flows into good shoulders and well developed forechest. Straight bone with slightly sloping pasterns, would prefer tighter feet. Plenty of rib and deep brisket. Clean, sloping topline with a short loin and straight tail. Excellent bend of stifle with short hocks. Accurate mover all round while maintaining his shape.

3) Adams’, Fisherbloom Re’Encountered JW.

Pointer Open Bitch (2,0)

1) Norbury & Adams’, Heartbury Northern Lights JW. This orange/white bitch was at the top of her game today. Middle-sized, lissom and curvy. Loved her feminine head with such great chiselling around the eyes and cheeks with open nostrils and dark pigment. Her dark eyes, correct stop and thin leathers contributed to her kindly, almost melting expression. Excellent shape and reach of neck that seamlessly flows into the best forehand assembly of the entry today. Straight, strong bone with excellent oval feet. Deep in brisket with a short loin. Her topline flowed from the top of her neck to the tip of her straight tail. Ample width over her quarters with symmetrical rear assembly. Her movement is something to behold. Going/coming she demonstrates absolute precision with firm hocks and elbows and from the side her correctly made forehand allows for such easy, fluid reach and she uses her short hocks to propel her round the ring with minimal effort. All of this was topped off by her lashing tail and high head carriage on a loose lead. Performed flawlessly to secure BOB in such a competitive breed entry, congratulations!

2) Davies’, Phlynnies Our Maid Marion. This honest liver/white bitch possesses many appealing breed features. Slightly longer cast than 1 but very curvy and free from exaggeration. Head is built on longer planes with lots of work in it and a kind expression. Slightly arched neck with balanced angulation both front/rear and mature through her body. Steady mover from all directions carrying her tail well.

Retriever (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling) Puppy (3,1)

1) Trickett’s, Cyfyre’s High Tea at Tollpepper (Imp Can). Excellent type and so obviously feminine. Delightful head, being clean-cut with slight tapering to muzzle with still room to develop a bit more in skull. Her shape and shade of eye contributed to her friendly expression with an excellent ear set. Strong neck into a well made forehand with strong bone and round feet, would prefer a touch more foreleg but this can still come. Decent topline with plenty of depth for her age. Corresponding rear angles, displayed a really eye-catching jaunty action on the go-round with true front/rear action. Thought her to be delightful. BPIB, congratulations!

Retriever (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling) Junior (3,0)

1) Lam & Leung’s, Tollisty Out To Get You. This male appealed for his overall type and proportions on first glance. Plenty of width over his skull and a very pleasing expression due to his shape/shade of eye but would prefer slightly less stop to be critical. Strong neck which flows into an excellent forehand assembly with straight bone and tight fitting elbows. Well sprung rib, deep brisket and good length of foreleg. Decent rear angulation with firm hocks. Tidy mover going/coming with an excellent side gait and typical head carriage.

2) Trickett’s, Cyfyre’s High Tea at Tollpepper (Imp Can). See puppy class.

3) Strevens’, Tollisty You Can’t Decline.

Retriever (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling) Post Graduate (6,1)

1) Rice’s, Tollerice Eberle. A very appealing male for balance of angulation and breed type. Loved his clean cut head with plenty of width between the ears and correct shape of eye. Wouldn’t want his ears any larger but are correctly set. Good overall forehand with width between his straight limbs. Decent spring of rib but would prefer more body which would’ve potentially carried him further. Level topline held standing and on the move with complimentary rear angles. True going/coming with a springy side gait that covers the ground with a correctly carried tail. Liked him a lot.

2) Elkin’s, Tollelkin Dream Harbour JW. From a slightly smaller mould than 1 but not lacking in bone. Clean head with good tapering to muzzle, preferred the eye shape of 1. Excellent neck and shoulders. Well bodied up with strong topline. Plenty of rear angulation and short hocks. Goes with real gusto on the go-round.

3) Elkin’s, Tollelkin Dream Dancer JW.

Retriever (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling) Open (8,2)

This class was a real joy to judge.

1) Elkin’s, Tollelkin Caife Americano SWGC. This male stood out in today’s entry for his excellent type, proportions and ring presence. No mistaking his sex, such excellent strength and shape through muzzle and skull without coarseness. Excellent eye shape and colour emphasised his friendly and intelligent expression. Strong neck into well laid shoulders and return of upper arm. Appealing length to height proportions combined with a good length of foreleg. Strong topline with symmetrical rear angulation and short hocks. In full coat and hard condition, he is hard to ignore on the move. Tidy mover going/coming with a jaunty, ground-covering side gait. Very pleased to award him BOB, congratulations!

2) Westwood’s, Eusanit Ever Fallen Love. Really liked this bitch for her balance and ground covering movement. Pretty head with moderate stop, flat cheeks, almond shaped eyes and correctly sized ears. Excellent forehand with well developed forechest, good length of foreleg and deep brisket. Level topline, correct croup and tail set with complimentary rear angles and firm hocks. True going/coming with a springy action viewed from the side and typical head carriage. Not quite the overall finish of 1 but was very close. Very happy to call her back in to be awarded RBOB, congratulations!

3) Anstead’s, Sh Ch Riverwatcher Koda.

German Wirehaired Pointer Puppy (2,0)

1) Geary’s, Germanus Hotwyr Minjarra. Medium sized bitch presenting a good overall picture for her age. Pretty head and eye with room for further development in skull and muzzle with correct pigment. Good overall forehand assembly with proportionate straight bone for her size. Age-appropriate body at this stage with plenty of time to develop further. Strong topline with excellent rear angulation and correct tail set. Very much a baby on the move needing to firm up all through but holds an excellent topline and carries her tail well when viewed from the side. Decent coat. Won the class on her more settled performance. Very happy to award her BPIB, congratulations!

2) Quinn & Skeemer’s, Germanus Hotwyr Yindi. Litter brother 1, who enjoyed playing the class clown today. Once settled, he showed glimpses of a very promising young dog with a strong and well bodied shape. Lots of very appealing breed features that will be easier to appreciate once he understands his job. Excellent proportions, bone, head, angulation and very good coat. Lost out today due to his unsettled performance. I urge his handler to persevere, he will be worth the wait!

German Wirehaired Pointer Junior (1,0)

1) Geary’s, Germanus Black In Bizniz. Well made young dog who was expertly handled. Plenty of strength to skull and muzzle but should develop further with excellent shape/shade of eye. Good neck onto correct forehand with strong bone and well shaped feet. Plenty of body for age with a firm topline. Wouldn’t want anymore rear angulation but still firm on his hocks. Steady going/coming with an age-typical side gait while holding a good topline. Decent coat. Preferred the more correct rear of the Puppy class winner for BPIB.

German Wirehaired Pointer Post Graduate (4,1)

1) Donnelly’s, Kimmax Who Kares Wins JW. Judged this one a couple of weeks ago and paid the price due to an unsettled performance on the move. Excellent for type and size with strong bone proportionate to her size. Well proportioned, ultra-feminine head with ample breadth to muzzle and skull with dark eyes and correct pigment. Excellent balance for fore/rear angulations with plenty of breadth over her quarters. She possesses straight bone and firm hocks. On the move she was precise going/coming and covered the ground with such efficiency when viewed from the side. The best coat of the entry today, well handled. Delighted to be able to award her BOB, congratulations!

2) Donnelly’s, Kimmax They Kall Me Mr Tibbs. Really typy young dog who has taken on many appealing attributes from his dam who won the class. Very nice balance of fore/rear angulation with a particularly good return of upper arm. Needs to body up and come together to fill his frame. Really liked his coat texture and co-ordination on the move for a young dog. Will do well with maturity. Very happy to award him RBOB, congratulations.

3) Turnbull’s, Kimmax Two Kan Play at Elagram (AI).
