Beagle Club

The Beagle Club Open Show

19th November 2022

My sincere thanks to the committee of the Beagle Club for giving me the honour of judging Dogs at their November, Open Show.  It was a long awaited appointment and a great privilege to judge so many lovely examples of a breed that has always been part of my life.

Thank you to all the exhibitors for a wonderful entry and to my two hard working stewards who helped to make it such a super day.

As with many breeds, I did feel that some exhibits lacked conditioning, which also affected movement, which was evident on the away and back.  However, I was pleased with my winners and delighted to see my Best Dog, Wenannou White Thunder JW, go on to win Best In Show.  I must make mention of the Best Puppy In Show, Koorbats Meadow, who was selected by my co-judge, Mrs Chapman, from MPB; what a beautiful young puppy, very true in both conformation and type.

1.    Wenman’s Wenannou White Thuder JW

This young hound appealed to me from the first look.  Presented in top condition and nicely muscled. He came in to his own as he moved round the ring with a long easy stride while maintaining his shape.  Very compact with nicely proportioned head, good eye and expression and correct ear.  Clean neck with good angulation fore and aft.  Elbows firm and stood on good feet. Good depth and length to body with short coupling.  Good tailset and strong hindquarters and well let down parallel hocks.  All reflected in his correct straight movement. Delighted to award him BD and BIS.

2.    Taylor’s Deaconfield Lancer

A lovely hound of good shape and balance conveying true type.  With a tendency to sidewind on the move he made his handler work hard but when cooperating he showed a balanced side gait and was true away and back.  Lovely head with super expression, framed by correct ears.  Good reach of neck leading to nice lay of shoulder.  Good depth of chest, strong through the loin with good tail carriage.  Good rear angulation and well let down hocks.

3.    Murphy’s Davicard Picasso At Rhosyndu

Stockier all through and would benefit from more ring confidence. He moved out nicely round the ring but not always true coming and going.  Nicely proportioned head with dark eye of good shape, giving good expression.  Nice neck leading to balanced angulation, good proportions of depth and length, stood on good feet.

Four super gentleman in this class and a credit to their owners.

Pleasing 7.5 year old, who moved out well, presenting a nice profile and not showing his age.  Nice head of good proportions and well set ears.  Good length and strength of neck and nice through the body with good depth and ribbing but not as short coupled as first.  Tail well set. Balanced angulation with well let down hocks and standing on good feet.

1.    Roderick’s Barterhound Garrison

I admit I fell in love with this handsome gentleman who at 12.5 yrs was presented in excellent condition.  Lovely head of correct proportions, well set eyes showing the character of this breed.  Good ear set completing his appealing expression.  Good reach of neck leading to correct angulation with nice tight elbows.  Nicely balanced though the body and still holding his topline.  Good rear angulation, having lost very little  thigh muscling.  Moved out with reach and drive, showing good strong movement.
