Livingston Canine Society

Livingston Canine Society 22nd October 2022 – Gundogs (excl. Goldens)

My thanks to the Society for inviting me to judge at their show, and apologies to the exhibitors for the short delay with my critiques due to a close family bereavement two days after the show. The majority of exhibitors accepted my decisions sportingly on the day, with just one exception.

Cocker Spaniels

Junior (1) 1. Davidson’s Annilann Mister Boo. Well-grown 11m blue roan d with a happy, waggy tail. Lovely head, masculine but chiselled. Presented a square, balanced outline. Ribs well sprung and deep in brisket, good layback of shoulder and well bent stifles. Neat feet and moved straight and true. BP and 4th in Puppy Group

Graduate (1, absent)

Open (3, 1 abs) 1. and BOB Davidson’s Rancecraig a Million Dreams. Blue roan 22m old d, appealed for his overall type and balance, super forehand assembly and neat catlike feet. Looked a picture on the move, displaying a typical merry Cocker nature and appearing fit for function. 2. Sinclair’s Chataway Dress Tartan at Duclarus. Glamorous, compact and pretty 22m b in profuse black coat. Very eyecatching on the move. I preferred my winner’s feet, and more workmanlike overall appearance.

German S/H Pointers

Postgraduate (2,1) 1. and BOB Gibbon’s Faubourg Truly Scrumptious. 3 year old b, balanced in appearance with good depth of brisket and well-developed ribs. Would prefer a better forehand but sound and straight in limb, with correctly arched toes, could have moved with more drive.

Open (2) 1. Gibbon’s Fauborg Truly Scrumptious 2.Gibbon’s Kavacanne Cheeky Vimto at Faubourg. This 6 y.o. b was not entirely happy today and consequently did not move well. Preferred her daughter’s balance, movement, and elbow position.

Hungarian Viszlas

Open (1) 1.BOB and BP Denholm’s Roxombury Moonage Daydream of Molheden 7m old d with a very pleasing head and correct dentition. A little unsettled as handler had to rush into the ring. Reasonably well made, has a tendency to run downhill but stands level. Feet could be tighter.

Pointers

Graduate (5, 2 abs) 1. BOB and BP Fewster and Rossiter’s Joneva Just a Kiss. Really liked this 7m old of lovely proportion and balance, well made all through with well arched toes, and moved beautifully to take 3rd in Puppy Group later. 2. McCudden’s Fourthbourne Fifth Gear. Scopy boy with a pleasing outline, super feet, gently sloping topline, well-developed chest. Just preferred my winner on the move.

Open (2) 1. Fewster’s Kimifleur Back to Black. 1 y.o. b/w b. with very pleasing construction and balance. Needs time to develop in rib as elbows could be tighter, but super shoulder/upperam. Moved soundly and true. 2. McCudden’s Fourthbourne Fifth Gear.

Retrievers (Curly Coated)

Open (2) 1 and BOB. Cummings’ Molokain Enchanted One. 2yo black b with a pleasing head, good length of neck, excellent spring of rib and short coupled. Won for her better outline but hind action going away was very poor. 2. Duff’s Overbore League of Their Own 3 yo d carrying rather too much weight which spoilt his outline, with a roll over his shoulders. Super coat, would prefer stronger hindquarters.

Spaniels (English Springer)

Open (3, 1) 1 BOB and BP Wilson and Connor’s Pinereoch No Stunts Larrie. 8m d with a most appealing head, loved his profile both standing and on the move. Super reach of neck into well laid shoulders. Well ribbed up for age and excellent turn of stifle. 4TH in Group and 2nd in Puppy Group. 2. Rose’s Pinereoch Amethyst of Rosannoch. Lovely 7m.o. b with lots to like. Today giving her handler a hard time on the move but a pleasure to go over.

Spaniels (Welsh Springer)

Open (2, 1) 1 and BOB. Dyer’s Benton Small Talk among Tylwth. This 6 y.o. b’s heavy furnishings gave the appearance of being short in leg but she is not. Tends to stand and move a little wide in front but looks lovely in profile movement, displaying more reach than I expected from her forehand assembly. Loved her head and her neat feet.

Weimaraners

Graduate (4) 1. Maclaine and Dickson’s Greyspirit Mystique CPW22. Has all the breed essentials and was the best mover in this class Beautiful head and expression, well made and balanced all through, with nothing to jar the eye. 2. Jamieson’s Greyspirit Kept Me Waiting. 16m d needing time to mature, at present a little rangey for my taste and preferred my winner’s head. 3. and BP Cain’s Schonhund Show Mia Star at Lustamusk.

Open (5) 1, BOB and Group 2 Maclaine and Dickson’s Greyspirit Hopes ‘n’ Dreams JW. Splitting hairs here between two quality exhibits I discovered afterwards were sister and brother. Both really pleased my eye, just marginally preferred the b’s front assembly and feet 2. Burgess’ Greyspirit Rock Out with Hantzburg JW Lovely d, unlucky to meet his sister today. 3. Cain’s Schonhund Show Tallulaj at Lustamusk.

AVNSC Gundog Open (6, 2)

Super class where I liked all four dogs entered 1. Mowbray’s Crumbledor Rebus Hagrid. Sussex Spaniel I have long admired Just such a super example of the breed, presented and shown to perfection, moved beautifully to take 3rd in the Gundog Group. 2.Duncan’s Diggmere Strawberry Heart. Lovely Spinone who was a pleasure to go over, just needs to lift her head more on the move for her young handler. 3. Stevenson’s Banshee White Roll (Imp Pol) Clumber Spaniel

Gundog Group 1. Harper’s Tullochmohr Shooting Star at Glynerva JW Golden Retriever. This was the first time I can recall giving the Group to one of my own breed, but this outstanding young cream bitch was in absolutely top form and could not be denied. She has everything I could wish for, presenting a classic outline and moved so accurately and efficiently. About to turn a year, I hope she continues to develop along these lines – if she does, she is surely destined for the top. 2. Maclaine and Dickson’s Weimaraner Greyspirit Hopes ‘n’ Dreams JW 3. Mowbray’s Sussex Spaniel Crumbledor Rebus Hagrid. 4. Wilson and Connor’s Springer Spaniel Pineroch No Stunts Larrie.

Gundog Puppy Group 1. Harper’s Golden Tullochmohr Shooting Star at Glynerva JW. 2. Wilson and Connor’s Springer Spaniel Pineroch No Stunts Larrie. 3. Fewster and Rossiter’s Pointer Joneva Just a Kiss. 4. Davidson’s Cocker Spaniel Annilann Mister Boo.

AV Gundog Puppy (13, 3) A super class! 1. Harper’s Tullochmohr Shooting Star at Glynerva JW. 2. Ellis’ Tenfield Sparkling Sunrise. I just loved this balanced mid-gold puppy, she was a joy to go over, with absolutely nothing to dislike, she was extremely unlucky to meet the winner who simply looked more finished today but I can well imagine they could swop places on another day when in different stages of development. 3. Fewster and Rossiter’s Pointer Joneva Just a Kiss.

AV Gundog Graduate (3, 2) 1. Bone’s Fitzrovia Erik the Red. Rich russet WH Viszla with a lovely head of good proportions, nose with well-developed nostrils. Balanced all through, well-developed and muscled for age. Good profile movement, just a little erratic going away.

Open (10,3) 1. Hill and Smith’s Megarvey Clementine JW Another top quality Golden, beautifully made and perfectly presented in mid-gold coat. Loveliest of heads, straight front and strong pasterns, excellent layback of shoulder, well sprung ribs and short coupled, moved well holding a level topline. 2. Mowbray’s Sussex Spaniel Crumbledor Rebus Hagrid. 3. Davidson’s Cocker Rancecraig a Million Dreams.
