Darwen Canine Society

Darwen and District Canine Society Open Show

17th December 2022

Thank you to the committee for the kind invitation to judge at this well-run show, and also to the sporting exhibitors who turned out at this festive time of year. Your sportsmanship and good humour was much appreciated.

Samoyed

Puppy (2, 1)

1st) Young’s Cocosamel Camelia JW, good head and eye, correct expression and nice type all through, well bodied & handles well. A good mover and goes with great accuracy. BOB

Open (1, 0)

1st) Young’s Cocosamel Misia, dam of Camelia and shares many of the same attributes, a lovely bitch, really nice type and a sound, accurate mover from all angles, when she settled. Presented and handled to perfection. Just pipped to the post by her lovely daughter today.

Border Collie

Postgraduate (5, 4)

1st) Phair’s Primroseway Raptor, most promising and a typical example of the breed, a touch unsettled on the move at times but when she got into her stride she proved to be a good, typical mover & carried herself as she should do.

Open (3, 2)

1st) Phair’s Starside Love Affair, dam of Raptor & a good shape and type. Correct head and expression, good strength whilst retaining femininity; correct shoulders & ribbing, firm topline & went with an easy, ground covering stride. BOB.

Welsh Corgi (Cardigan)

Junior (1, 0)

1st) Smith’s Ceranda Gower Diamond, a really lovely 7 month old bitch, I thought she was so promising in all respects; super head and eye, good front & firm topline, well muscled for her age; really took my eye. BOB & BPIB.

Post Graduate (1, 0)

1st) Smith’s Glynaeron Alwyn, a really nice sort and most typical. Good head and eye, in good body condition & well handled. Not the most outgoing in this venue and this told against her, will have many better days as she is very smart.

Welsh Corgi (Pembroke)

Puppy (4, 1)

1st) Morris’ Hey You Beautiful (NBT), & 2nd) Lucas’ Never Been Better at Shadyblu; siblings and similar in most respects, easy to tell they knew each other with how happy they were in each other’s company! Both are very typical and most promising, liked their heads, on the day felt the winner’s head slightly more expressive, good bodies on both & with some maturity should do well, the winner outmoved 2nd on the day, but both well handled. 1ST was BPIB.

3rd) Morris’ Reach For The Stars (NBT)

Post Graduate (1, 0)

1st) Smith’s Ryslip Jaffacake, bearing this famous affix & a real cosmopolitan in terms of her pedigree, this bitch was most interesting. Very expressive, loved everything about her, well knit & in great muscular condition (perhaps a touch too much condition!), goes so well & is a real eyecatcher on the move. BOB.

Shetland Sheepdog

Puppy (5, 3)

1st) Hateley’s Mohnesee Coconut Dream, adored this bitch – from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail. She is so promising and typical in all respects, for her age she is so self-assured; she knows her worth. Nothing to change at this age and she is a most exciting prospect for the future with her perfect footfall & a handler who knows just how to get the most out of her. A treat to judge. Beaten for BOB only by her lovely kennelmate. BPIB.

2nd) Savage’s Shellamoyed Midnight Max at Savataurus, not quite so advanced mentally or in terms of maturity as the winner and so lacking self-assuredness; but another nice one. Unfortunately not happy on the table, and did not settle to advantage on the move; but when he did relax, he went with a reasonably sound action. Presented & handled well.

Junior (4, 2)

1st) Hateley’s Mohnesee Coconut Dream, see 1st Puppy.

2nd) Savage’s Shellamoyed Midnight Max at Savataurus, see 2nd Puppy.

Open (6, 3)

1st) Hateley’s Lizmark Lullaby Moon Over Mohnesee, excellently marked & another eyecatcher from this clever exhibitor. I didn’t think I would find one to put above Coconut Dream today, but this is an excellent bitch, so shapely and sound, super expression and goes with such a beautiful, easy action. I think they will battle it out a few times over the summer months! BOB.

2nd) Welford’s Ristine Emerald, another beautiful bitch with so much to admire, and another who goes with such a super, easy and correct action. Very good to go over and little to change, not going quite so fluidly on the move as the winner today I thought.

Lancashire Heeler

Post Graduate (2, 0)

1st) Lawrence’s Hoscar Agnes, super head and eye, excellent shape & body, well ribbed and firm in topline, tail well set & carried and goes with a really lovely, sound action away and back. Full of character, really lovely. BOB.

2nd) Grifin’s Simonsville Fenwick, another with much to admire, just a touch more immature than the winner in body, lovely head and eye, correct expression; good to go over & in enough muscle. Another with a sound, easy stride.

Open (1, 0)

1st) Lawrence’s Brinscall Moors Bertie, very nice type & of admirable quality throughout. Very typical and in good condition. Front could be a touch better and this showed when standing and on the move, but a really smart mover in profile.

Rough Collie

Puppy (2, 0)

1st) Gelder’s Libanel Eerebus Eternal Love, nice youngster, though perhaps not the head quality or overall balance as 2nd, but out-moved 2nd on the day and went with a free, easy stride on a floor which was not always the easiest for dogs to cover. Presented and handled well & a most admirable prospect.

2nd) Rose’s Beldones Clementine, I liked the shape and balance of this youngster and I thought she would be my winner on first impression. She is lovely to go over and a most promising youngster, but would not use herself on the floor today & so had to pay the price. She will have many more good days, I don’t doubt.

Junior (1, 0)

1st) Holmes and Lusty’s Blamorder Gold Plated, very nice shape and type & mature for his age, interestingly bred young dog. I liked his overall balance, head is attractive; well angulated forehand and firm topline, nice hindquarters, and an easy, free mover. BPIB.

Open (4, 1)

1st) Williams’ Essanjay Fire And Ice, best mover in this class, coupled with her shape and overall balance both standing and when moving, it took her to BOB. Much to admire overall, lovely head an eye, good forehand, firm topline and well muscled throughout. Liked her a lot.

2nd) Leese’s Essanjay Fields Of Gold, I see he is out of the same stable, and another who is most beautiful & imposing. Much to admire when going over him & a very fit, muscular dog. Not quite the accuracy of the winner on the move and this told against him today.

3rd) Savage’s Peblu Gold Reflection at Savataurus JunCh

Norweigan Buhund

Puppy (1, 0)

1st) Irvine’s Blackcombe Bodil at Tapui (IMP AUS), a most striking puppy, excellent shape and type and a real beauty to go over. So little to change even at this young age & her self-assuredness and confidence carries her with easy and accuracy around the ring. Lots to like here & one to watch I feel. BOB & BPIB.

Open (3, 1)

1st) Irvine’s Blackcombe Bodil at Tapui (IMP AUS), see 1st Puppy.

2nd) Irvine’s Ch Kimur’s Vera with Tapui (IMP NOR), another from this kennel but born on another side of the word! Another of great quality and bearing, and I am not surprised at all to see she is titled. Just felt Bodil had the freshness of youth on the day, but little between these two lovely dogs.

Bearded Collie

Puppy (2, 1)

1st) Carter’s Jaroca Josephine at Ravenswyre, a real beauty, on first glance her alance and outline are most appealing. Super shape and type, much to admire on going over her, most promising and so sound in all directions. Expertly presented and handled. BOB & BPIB.

Briard

Puppy (2, 1)

1st) Foster’s Fosterbrie Special Edition, special indeed. Love this puppy who is very special, a real picture of balance. Excellent head and eye, with strength without coarseness, hands on she is so correct and well made. On the move she goes with a free, easy stride out and back and in profile she has real appeal. BPIB.

Open (1, 0)

1st) Foster’s Fosterbrie Just Unique JW Lux JunCh, another beautiful animal from this kennel, with great bearing. Loved his head and eye, skeletally so correct & in fit, hard muscular condition. Presented in a coat of excellent texture and in first class order. I appreciate the effort & time that goes into presenting this breed & the dogs exhibited from this kennel today were a credit to them and their handlers. BOB.

German Shepherd Dog

Puppy (3, 1)

1st) Carrier’s Tonyfre Leah at Sylcarr and 2nd) Davies’ Tonyfre Darth Vader, very little to separate these two and I appreciate their different virtues. I have discovered they are litter mates, and I am not surprised. Leah was BPIB on the day as she was a touch more mature than her brother, as is often the way with bitches. They are both super shape and type, go with good, easy strides and are well handled & put down in first class order. Many good days ahead for both of them if they mature on in this vein.

Open (2, 1)

1st) Davies’ Samstag Dana, dam of the puppies and she is the finished article. Beautiful head and expression, she has substance without being coarse throughout & is in good, fit condition. Made the best of the floor surface to show off her free, easy strides on the move. BOB.

Coton De Tulear

Post Graduate (2, 1)

1st) Peckett’s Cotontop Peter Pan, lovely young dog, good head and eye, firm front and correct topline, well muscled & good to go over. Sound and accurate on the move and presented in a good jacket of correct texture.

Open (3, 1)

1st) Colley’s King of Thieves, good shape and type, correct head and good pigment, enough neck, firm topline and tail both set and carried correctly, keeps his shape on the move & goes with an easy, free action. BOB.

2nd) Peckett’s Cotonkiss It’s A Kiss for Cotontop, another lovely dog, close up to the winner and with so little to dislike, very typical of the breed & really looked good, particularly on the move. Presented and handled perfectly.

Havanese

Puppy (2, 1)

1st) Thorne’s Tonnerre Apache Coeur De Masai avec Dyffrynsands, loved this puppy as soon as I saw him. Beautiful head and eye, firm forehand & well laid shoulders, good topline and well ribbed. In good muscular condition and a really sound, free mover. Most promising and should have a good career. BOB, BPIB & Toy Puppy Group 1.

Post Graduate (3, 1)

1st) Thorne’s Jamboree Le Coueur De Masai avec Blevwil, really lovely shape and type, much to admire and really good to go over. Liked his balance and his outline both standing and moving. Went with an easy action away and back and carried himself well in profile.

Open (3, 2)

1st) Thorne’s Dyffrynsands Tilly Tinker, another beautiful bitch from this kennel & lovely to see her correct presentation; good head and eye, so nice to go over & in great body and muscular condition. Much to commend her and she went with a free, easy and correct action, just not as accurate as the beautiful & confident puppy on the day.

AVNSC Toy

Open (1, 0)

1st) Stading’s Stadmeyer Rolybeh Talizea, beautiful bitch put down in the most immaculate coat and condition of the correct colours and texture. Good to go over, lovely head and eye, correct expression & good ears, well laid shoulders and correct depth to chest, good ribbing, topline and tail. Went with a good, free action & handled well. BAVNSC.

Chinese Crested

Puppy (3, 1)

1st) Laws’ Karamouche Parti Frock, lovely puppy, good head and eye, excellent dentition; correct forehand and enough depth to chest, well ribbed & firm topline, tail set and carried well, good driving action from the rear. A promising puppy, as was 2nd. BOB & BPIB.

2nd) Brooks’ Karamouche Kiss This at Zetamaz, I see sibling to the winner & very similar in most respects. Liked a lot about this one too & they do share many of the same attributes, another with a good head and expression, skeletally very correct & the winner just went with that touch more fluidity I thought. Both very promising puppies.

Open (4, 2)

1st) Ouseby’s Birchvolgyi Indigo Malverne ShCM (IMP HUNG), very nice shape and type, with good overall balance both standing and on the move. Good to go over, correct head and eye, good dentition & strength to foreface. Well laid shoulders, good depth to chest & firm topline. Sound and showy on the move with lots to like.

2nd) Picton’s Zerachiel The Prophecy, also very nice with much to commend her, just perhaps not quite so outgoing as the winner on the day, but when she did gather herself she went with a good, free and easy action & was also very good to go over on the table; being expressive in head, and well made in body, in good condition and muscle-tone. Very well presented.

Toy Group

1st) Cawthera-Purdy’s Pomeranian, Lireva’s Flyin Black In Time, smart young black dog, caught my eye immediately with his shape & outline, super head and eye, correct body shape & very good to go over, presented to perfection & loved him on the move, perfect footfall and commands attention. Later Reserve Best in Show – well done.

2nd) Crane’s Japanese Chin, Cranvarl’s Macey Grey JW, I see reading my catalogue that she is beautifully bred and so no surprise I liked her, as I liked her father too. Really lovely to go over, excellent expression & beautifully made throughout. Moves with such easy and accuracy, such a show off & so elegant. Like the Pom, I think she will have an exciting career. Presented in beautiful order.

3rd) Heap & Ransome’s Pekingese, Shiera D’Artagnan JW, super dog, lovely facial features with a great expression, thick set & well boned, good shape to body & picked up well; went with a typical and dignified action – expertly presented and handled.

4th) Fothergill’s S/C Chihuaha, I’m A Dream Violetta In Love for Diamonchi (IMP ITA), a lovely bitch to complete a nice group, very striking in outline, excellent head and eye, good body and firm quarters; much to commend her especially on the move, where she goes with an easy, but purposeful brisk action.

Toy Puppy Group

1st) Havanese, Thorne’s Tonnerre Apache Coeur De Masai Avec Dyffrynsands

2nd) Chinese Crested, Laws’ Karamouche Parti Frock

3rd) Turnbull’s Pug Nicobri’s Gotta Have Faith, really lovely and shows so much promise even at this tender age, excellent head and eye, super front and chest, firm topline & well set tail. In lovely condition and goes really well; most admirable and should have a good career.

4th) Taylor’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Luvtayl Rave About, good quality young dog, head still needs a little time but eyes are good for size and shape, body as you would expect for age & he does show promise; quite sound on the move and carries himself well, particularly in profile. Well-handled and presented.

AV Toy Veteran

1st) Callaghan and Todd’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, 13 years old – unbelievable! So much to admire about this beautiful bitch and I think I have previously given her BVIB at a Championship Show, everything about her is so correct & she is one I consider a touch unlucky not to have gained a crown in her youth; she possesses everything which endeared me to this special breed & there is so little I would change about her, an absolute credit to her owners who should be very proud of how they have kept and shown her over the years.

2nd) Entwhistle’s Ch Dorenty’s Viva Vienna JW, this L/C Chihuahua is an old favourite and one I have judged in the past, retains much that endeared her to so many as a youngster & she is still just as sassy! Super to watch on the move & goes with a typical action. A real credit to her owner/breeer.

3rd) Wiggins’ Ch Scapafield Schwarz Nite Sky JW

AV Toy Puppy

1st) Lynch and Nixon’s Pug, Afterglow Boss Hogg, promising young dog but head needs time; good to go over & strongly built throughout. Cobby & well knit, goes with a good, typical action.

AV Toy Open

1st) Scott’s Miniature Pinscher, Keljantzi’s Zelda to Maynell JW, very typical, expressive head and eye, good ears, well angulated forehand and good chest, firm topline with tail well set & carried; typical action with enough hackney. Very well presented and in super condition.

2nd) Turnbull’s S/C Chihuahua, Prinleigh’s Mischief Maker, very smart, typical in head and expression, good head and eye, correctly angulated forehand, firm topline and underline; tail well set and carried & goes with a good, easy action. In good coat and condition.
