Basset Griffon Vendeen Club

BGV Club : BGV Grand : Saturday 30th April 2022

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee for inviting me to judge albeit under unfortunate circumstances due to Michael Maclaren having to step down for medical reasons. Many thanks to Chris, Sue and Tina for their efficient stewarding and for keeping things moving. I would also like to thank the exhibitors, some of whom may have entered prior to the change in judge.

It is some time since I last judged the breed and whilst this was not a numerically large entry I was pleased with my winners. There is some variance in size within the breed so care needs to be taken to ensure that future of the breed works towards a balanced hound; fit for function, with breed type and within the height range of the breed standard.

BGV (Grand) Classes

Class 1. Puppy Dog (2,1,1) 1, KNOWLES & METSELAAR WILLIAMS’ STINTON SOLITAIRE AVEC BRAILLEMENT. 9 month, Tri male. Still a baby with a lot of maturing to do. A real masculine head, correct head planes, good dark pigment and lovely expression with lovely leather, curling in and set correctly. Good front, well off for bone, ribs and body okay but still a lot of developing to do; moderate at rear. Coat of correct texture. Moves well, nice long stride, reaching and driving could do with a bit more fine tuning to get the most out of him, promising youngster. BPIB

Class 2. Junior Dog No Entries

Class 3. Yearling Dog No Entries

Class 4. Post Graduate Dog (1,0,1) 1, KNOWLES’ ARAPELO EOILE AVEC BRAILLEMENT. 2 year, Tri male, A lot to like about this dog, lovely masculine head; nicely domes, dark eye giving lovely expression and nice big dark nose; good ears, set correctly. Liked his neck into clear shoulders and a good front; ribs are good and he is in good condition. Moderate at rear. Nicely put together, he moves well with nice tail carriage and carries his head well. To be super critical his feet are spoiled by his long nails ! RES BEST DOG

Class 5. Limit Dog (3,0,3) 1, SMITH & COOPER’S JAYANEL AMBIORIX 3 year, Grizzle / White. Mature male giving a balanced profile. Masculine head; nice dark eye, lovely wide open nose and good leathers of correct length and set on well. Plenty of bone, front is ok, moderate angulation at the rear, this male is in great condition. Moves well with good tai carriage. This dog would perform better in a larger ring where he has room to stride out. 2, MAKEY’S GAIRSIDE SPECIAL EDITION 2 years, grizzle / white. Young male maturing nicely. This dog is of a lighter mould to 1. Head is correct, nice dark eye and lovely leathers, set on correctly. Front is ok, ribs are ok and has good angulation at the rear. He presents a nice balanced picture in profile and moves well with nice long strides and plenty of drive. Excellent coat and condition. I would just prefer a bit more of him. 3, MARKS & JACKSON’S DUNTECH GEORGES

Class 6. Open Dog (2,0,2) A small class with two quality dogs who I am certain will change places. 1, MAKEY’S CH/BEL/INT CH GAIRSIDE GOOD LORD JW SHCM SHCEX 6 yrs, Grizzle / White masculine dog in fabulous condition. He has a typical GBGV head; so noble and with the darkest of eye and pigment giving him that lovely expression; his leathers are of good length and set correctly. In profile he is balanced and going over he has a good front, plenty of bone, good ribs and is nicely angled at the rear. Lovely coat of correct texture and he is in good muscular condition throughout. He moves exceptionally well in profile with plenty of drive. BEST DOG 2. BAILEY’S TARMACHAN ICE COOL 3 yrs, Tri. Of a different type to the winner and unlucky to meet 1 today who just had the sparkle today. Head is typical, nicely domed, big black nose and good ears; would prefer a darker eye. This dog has super construction; a good front into well laid back shoulder, nicely ribbed and moderate at the rear; he has good bone throughout. Like the winner he is in super muscular condition and this is evident as you see him move; he has reach and drive; keeps his topline at all times. There is nothing exaggerated about this dog, he has an excellent coat and is shown well.

Class 7. Veteran Dog No Entries

Class 8. Puppy Bitch No Entries

Class 9. Junior Bitch (1,0,1) 1. COOPER’S JAYANEL PEPPERMINT PATTY A lovely young bitch with a lot to like and quite some maturing still to do. She presents a feminine, balanced outline. She has a feminine head, good skull, nice dark eye and nose, leathers are good. She is very sound and well made throughout, a good front into nicely laid back shoulder, ribs are okay and she is well angled at the rear; her strong body condition shows in her level topline, kept at all times. She has a lovely harsh coat, and is presented well. She moves well out and back if a little unexaggerated; she was a touch flat today and could just do with a bit more sparkle.

Class 10. Yearling Bitch No Entries

Class 11. Post Graduate Bitch (1,0,1) 1. PHILLIPS’ DEBUCHER QUEBELLE 2 yrs bitch, grizzle and white. This youngster was quite a live wire, enjoying her day. She had a nice typical head; lovely dark eye giving a delightful expression, good nose and leathers, set on correctly. She had a good front, nice and straight with plenty of bone and good feet. In body she was well developed; well ribbed and strong in loin with correct moderate angulation at the rear. A correct harsh coat. She never really settled on the move which is a shame as there was a lot to like.

Class 12. Limit Bitch (5,1,4) Lovely class with some nice bitches; some difference in type and I expect on another day they would swap places. 1. MILTON’S WILMIT JUGEOTE Really caught my eye when she came into the class, 2 yr old Tricolour bitch. I liked her profile a lot; she is up on the leg but in proportion. She has a nice head; good skull, nice dark eye, good sized nose and nice ears of the correct length, curling in and set on well. Going over she is well made, a good front with plenty of upper arm which gives her a lovely striding movement. Good bone, nice feet with short nails. She has good front and rear assembly, is ribbed well back with a nice strong loin. Nice harsh jacket, presented in tip top condition she really won the class on her super sound construction and movement. RES BEST BITCH & RES BEST OF BREED 2. BAILEY’S GAIRSIDE SPECIAL EVENT This young bitch is of a different type to 1; super feminine, orange / white. She has the most feminine head, correct head planes, good pigment and nice leathers; she has a nice strong neck into good shoulders and whilst she is young she is well developed with good ribs. She has sufficient bone and nice feet, she is well conditioned and with a good coat, presented well. She is sound on the move, out and back she is foot perfect. She is not exaggerated in any way and could easily be overlooked. Interesting to see she is litter sister to 3, both very similar in type I just preferred the balance and condition of 2. 3. MAKEY’S GAIRSIDE SPECIAL INTEREST 4. ROBERTS’ TIOGA OPIHR

Class 13. Open Bitch (3,0,3) 1. O’DAY’S TARMACHAN BLACK ICE 5 yrs old, tricoour bitch. She really catches your eye; she is balanced in profile; presented really well and in great condition. Good strong neck, clean shoulders and straight forelegs, ribs are good, extending well back she is strong and in muscular condition. Moderate at rear with nicely muscled inner thigh.
