Minehead & District Canine Society Open Show 6th November 2022
Hounds
I would like to thank the Society for their invitation to Judge Hounds, ex Whippets, at this show which had a lovely, friendly atmosphere and where, as a Judge, we were very well looked after. I had some lovely Hounds to assess & on another day some could easily have changed places. Thanks must go to my very efficient steward Janet for helping to keep the ring running so smoothly. A few did suffer slightly when moving out on the floor but once a more steady pace was undertaken they were fine. I was delighted with the representatives from the various Hound Groups sent forward to the BIS Judge and was very pleased to see that the Whippet puppy later took BPIS.
Afghan Hound
Graduate (2,0abs)
1st Godber- Ford; Affynetta Mountain Breeze – felt that this lad moved out better here in this class. Nice in head and eye, good for neck length into a nicely laid front. Silky coat of sufficient length & stood on nice feet. Well ribbed back with sufficient depth to body, shapely rear quarters but topline could have been a touch cleaner. Moved out nicely. RBOB
2nd Godber-Ford; Affyneeta Desert Wind – note that these two are litter brothers. Good in head and eye, sufficient length of neck but just felt that this lad presented heavier over his front compared to his sibling. Lay of shoulder was fine but felt that a little more spring to the ribs would benefit. Curvy rear quarters used on the move.
Open (3,0abs)
1st Callard; Cloudside Basauri At Shimonay (AI) - good in head, jaw and expression, lovely neck length into good lay of shoulder. Sufficient depth of body and length of ribbing with nice underline, good in coat length & texture over body. At times did not present with the best of toplines but good overall shape and angulation front and rear, plus lightly moving out on good feet with reach & drive, won this class and BOB.
2nd Godber-Ford; Affynetta Toskcan Sun – debated between 2nd and 3rd but just felt that this lad moved out that wee bit better here. Nice in head & jaw although feel a touch less stop would accentuate the head shape, silky textured coat, stood on nice feet, with sufficient angulation overall and depth of body and ribbing.
3rd Godber-Ford; Affyneeta Dionysius
Dachshund Min S/H Open (5,1abs)
1st Tree; Keimantre Molly-Mou – felt that this bitch had nice length to height proportions with sufficient ground clearance. Nice in head with very slight arch over skull, good length & width of neck into well laid front angulation. Well ribbed back with nice topline and underline, good in rear angulation, stood on good feet with nice conditioning of body. Moved out well but felt she flagged somewhat later. BOB
2nd Wilkinson & Wakeham; Darque Angel For Wakywilks – puppy bitch, wouldn’t want her any longer in body compared to her height but good ground clearance. Nice in head proportions with slightly domed over skull, nice neck into well angled front. Ribbed back, good length of sternum, slight slope to tail and nicely filled and angled rear quarters. BPIB RBOB HPG3
3rd Wilkinson-Wakeham; Bronia Valentina For Wakywilks
Dachshund Min W/H
Graduate (3,2abs)
1st Kilroy – Blackvein Rambler At Janacop JW; smart young bitch, would prefer a slightly gentler curve of underline but good proportions for length of body and ground clearance. Good for head proportions, nice length & breadth of neck into well laid front assembly. Depth of body good and well ribbed back into nicely set rear quarters but in the challenge felt she moved a touch closer behind. RBOB
Open (2,0abs)
1st Howells – Fallowmill Miss Range Rover; another smart bitch but she was determined to enjoy her day and be a bit naughty! Good in head into a lovely length neck but she doesn’t always show her good front angulation by standing back into her neck somewhat. Good length of body to height with sufficient ground clearance and gently sweeping underline. Nicely ribbed back, slightly sloping croup to tail and good rear quarters with muscling. BOB & HG4
2nd Kilroy – Blackvein Cupid At Janacop; male with nice head but a touch more back skull might balance a wee bit better. Good length of neck into nice front assembly, good for ground clearance and depth of body, nicely ribbed back. Stood on good feet, rear quarters of good proportions with good upper thigh and well conditioned. Moved out well.
Dachshund L/H Open (2,1abs)
1st Rees – Sundayshill Blackberry; male with good head proportions & eye, neck of sufficient length and breadth into a good lay of shoulder. Body deep, nicely ribbed back with reasonable length of loin. Nice for topline, which was kept on the move, flowing into gently sloping croup to tail. Rear quarters nicely angled and conditioned but felt he could have been a touch tidier on the move today. BOB
Dachshund S/H Open (5,0abs)
1st Stark – Adnerbs Won Vision Of Gobannium JW; smart bitch of good length to height proportions and with good ground clearance. Good for head proportions and slight dome over skull, nice length neck of strength flowing into a well laid front assembly. Good for bone and feet, gently sweeping underline, well ribbed back and shapely rear quarters which she used well on the move. BOB
2nd Small – Almaznyi Laretz Ershalaim At Devondax; b/t male nice in head proportions & jaw with ears set back & rounded. Neck of reasonable length & breadth into well angled front assembly but felt that 1st was just a touch cleaner over the shoulder. Height to length proportions good with ground clearance, just felt I would have preferred a touch more ribbed back. Well rounded rump of nice angles & gentle slope to tail. RBOB
3rd Rycroft – Jacksondax Hornet Hurrah BPIB
Dachshund W/H Open (1,0abs)
1st Matthews – Stanegate Senorita With Sonham; smart 10 month puppy in good coat, body length to height proportions good, has good ground clearance but occasionally would stand under presenting a higher picture behind. Lovely in head & expression, firm neck of good length into a well set front assembly. Good for bone & feet, nicely ribbed back, gentle slope to tail, good angulation behind and a full, firm rump for age. Moved out well. BOB, BPIB, HG3, HPG2
Borzoi Graduate (2,1abs)
1st Logvinenko – Ryazan Vladimir; good in head & expression with very slight dome flowing into a neck of reasonable length & muscling. Shoulders set well to body with sufficient muscling, perhaps a touch more depth brisket to elbow but nicely ribbed back with slight arch over back ribs. Good for bone and pasterns, good for tuck up into nicely angled rear quarters. Lovely effortless side profile movement but was a little untidy in front coming towards me today. BOB
Basset Hound
Graduate (2,0abs)
1st Saunders – Beckshounds Luminara; my notes started ‘splitting hairs here’ and have now noticed that they were siblings! Gleaming coat & condition on this bitch, has substance but still maintains the look of fitness. Just preferred this bitch for eye & head over 2nd, she has nice head proportions and ears set well, good length of neck of strength, well set front assembly, long and deep body, but with clearance, into well angled rear quarters with lovely muscling. Good for bone, pasterns and feet. Did strongly consider in the HG but just went a touch untidy behind in the group. BOB
2nd Beckett – Beckshounds Layerorgana; as previously said I personally preferred the eye and overall head of the 1st bitch but many of the attributes given to 1st also apply here. Good in neck length with strength into her well laid front assembly, long and deep but maintaining sufficient clearance, perhaps a touch more firmness of topline but well ribbed back into nicely angled rear quarters with muscle. RBOB
Open (2,1abs)
1st Saunders – Beckshounds Luminara; as above
Beagle
Graduate (1.0abs)
1st Roberts & Spearing – Linkenlees Laurina; an overall lovely shape to this bitch, height to length, but perhaps stood just a tad wide when viewed from the front. Lovely head proportions & expression, good length & strength to her neck into a well laid front assembly. Good for elbow placement & depth of body, well ribbed back into nice loin and good firm back of nice length. Hips and thighs of good proportions with muscling, stood on nice feet and bone. BOB
Open (1,0abs)
1st Roberts & Spearing – Linkenlees Lyric ShCM ShCEx; another smart bitch, see a sibling to Grad winner but moved out somewhat closer behind on the go away, stood on good feet and bone. Good angled front assembly, good for depth of body with sufficient length of ribbing into nicely angled rear quarters. Appeared a touch heavier than the BOB winner, but happy to award RBOB.
Ibizan Hound Open Dog (2,1abs)
1st Carter – Nevaeh’s Radical Dude (IMP USA); young male who seemed a little reluctant to present an alert, ears erect picture at times. Nice head planes into a strong neck of good length, slightly arched and flowing into a front as required and good long legs, reasonably level back with slight slope from pin bones, gently curving underline and rear quarters of length with no great angulation. Moved out OK. RBOB
Ibizan Hound Open Bitch (3,1abs)
1st Carter – Ch Afilador Room On The Broom ShCM; I felt that today some of these Hounds did not move out as perhaps they could, perhaps some did fully settle on the floor & a few needed to go that wee bit slower. This bitch too was a touch reluctant at times to present & complete the good head picture with fully erect & alert ears. Good in neck length presenting a very slight arch into a correctly angled front and length of shoulder blade. Long straight legs and nice feet, long flat ribcage & short loin into long & reasonably straight rear quarters with sufficient muscle tone. Moved out OK. BOB
2nd Carter – Amahte’s Bewitched VW (Imp Can); veteran bitch just now starting to show her age in body and movement, she was slightly loose on the coming towards. The overall picture was of a typey hound with the required front and rear angulation, long legs, nice in head and neck, long flat ribcage and short loin & nice in depth but just loosing that bit of firmness overall now.
AVNSC Hound Graduate (3,0abs)
1st Skinner – Boughton Bandaroo (Greyhound); lovely head & expression on this bitch, long neck of strength into a well angled front assembly with good muscle tone, Good for body depth, smooth tuck up and well ribbed back with good loin and slight arch over. Curvy rear quarters with good muscle tone, stood on nice feet. Res. Best AVNSC
2nd Carter – Gouvier Espresso Martini (BFDB); male with nice head planes, depth of muzzle and expression, good ears with fold. Neck muscular with shoulders slightly sloping, broad chest, well ribbed back but felt that his topline could be a touch cleaner when stood. Rear assembly strong with good angulation, hocks let down and good tail.
3rd Stephenson – Norvin Marvel Of Brawdor (Norwegian Elkhound);
AVNSC Hound Open (6,2abs)
1st Heather – Ch. Whiteorchard Ad Astra JW (Irish Wolfhound); such a lovely bitch, strode out covering what was not the easiest floor for her with lightness and ease. Lovely head planes & super expression into a good length of neck with strength, super correct front assembly, lovely lines to her tuck up, well ribbed back into a firm loin. Good topline and croup into good rear quarters of lovely angles and super muscle tone. Stood on well boned legs with good feet. Could not deny her Best AVNSC & Hound Group 1.
2nd McMahon – Seasara High Flyer (Norwegian Elkhound); a smart male if somewhat bouncey at times, obviously enjoying himself. Good head with slight arch over skull and erect, alert ears, jaws of strength. Shoulders sloping, neat in elbows and stood on good legs with nice feet. Body compact with deep chest, well ribbed and good rear assembly with good muscle tone.
3rd Carrington – Bushwacker Oceans Eleven (Basenji);
AV Hound Puppy (8, 4abs)
1st Howgate & Hull – Palmik A Million Dreams (Whippet); headed a class of some lovely puppies, this bitch was so sound on the move and had the edge on maturity here. Sweet in head & expression, correct neck of strength into a lovely front assembly. Well ribbed back, back to just tighten slightly with maturity, good tuck up, slight arch over the loin into a correctly angled rear assembly. Stood on legs of good bone and feet. BAV & BAVP
2nd Prowse – Freehamlet Saint Cecilia; another smart Whippet puppy bitch with a lovely head & expression. Good length neck with strength for age into a good front assembly. Well ribbed back with gentle tuck up but just needs to firm up in loin, this will come as she is still so young. Shapely rear quarters, stood on lovely feet and she too moved out soundly.
3rd Wilkinson & Wakeham; Bronia Valentina For Wakywilks
AV Hound Open (10, 5abs)
1st Trouton – Citycroft Grace Kelly Of Runnel JW (Whippet); again I had two Whippets at the head of this class, the first being a bitch with a lovely head & expression, good in neck flowing into lovely front assembly. A curvy bitch with nice topline and curvy underline, good for depth and ribbing flowing into nicely angled rear quarters. A steady and sound mover.
2nd Livsey – Bryntreia Sea Of Love; another sound male, just preferred the lay of the front assembly of 1st. Lovely in head & neck with strength into nicely angled front. Good for body depth and length, well ribbed back, curvy underline into well angled rear quarters. Another in lovely condition & muscle tone, moved out well.
3rd Poulier – Auradach Alfred The Great (MSH Dachshund)
Veteran Hound (16
1st Wayman – Speymalt Northern Star JW; absolutely love these veterans and wished that they could all have had a rosette here but so rightfully deserved of the ringside applause for them. Class headed by this Whippet male who was very sound here, has a classic type head & expression, neck of length & breadth into a well laid front assembly. Good for body depth & length, well ribbed back and curvy underline. His rear quarters were of good angulation which he used well on the move. BV & RBAV
2nd Heather – Ch. Ravensbeech Revenio Whiteorchard; loved this Irish Wolfhound male who appeared to be really enjoying his day in the ring, sadly the floor did not allow him to move as freely today. Lovely in head, jaws & expression, neck of good length & strength all flowing into his lovely front angulation. Stood on good legs & feet, lovely depth of body & well ribbed back but just dropping his topline a wee bit. Firm in loin & good croup flowing into his lovely rear quarters, lovely muscle tone for his age.
