Breed: Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois)

My sincere thanks to all of the Committee for their hospitality before and during this very well organised show and for inviting me to judge Malinois. Only two males were entered, one being a raw puppy and the other unfortunately had to be withheld from due to poor temperament and an overall lack of breed type. This meant that DCC & RCC could not be awarded, only a best of sex which went to the dog puppy. One of the bitches had more than a little grumble during exam although stood suitably to be gone over. All in all disappointing in a variety which for many years, certainly from show lines, has produced calm and stable characters. It’s important with so few being produced and shown these days those exhibitors having issues with their dogs seek help and advice on the best way forward to overcome problems and not use a show to “test the water”.

PD (1,0)

1st Willingham & Metcalf’s GOLDMALI SALUTE BELSHEDO, 9 months lad well grown for age although obviously raw at this stage, standing over a little too much ground he has proportionate substance to size, head is good for length, receding slightly in skull at present, good mask, tall ears, eyes could be darker. Sufficient neck, ok topline, rather steep in front assembly, better in rear; loose puppy movement, good coat colour and texture, good temperament. BPIB & BOS

JB (2,0)

1st Mackie, Lester & Smith’s FORYD DENALI AT HAWKSFLIGHT ***, Lovely young bitch of 14 months, very feminine and excellent type throughout; long dry head, very good parallels and chiselling, excellent ear size, set and use, good mask, pigment and split, mid-brown obliquely set eyes, lovely reach and crest of neck, good withers, flowing onto firm topline and good croup; slightly more open angles in front than rear, moved well particularly in side gait with good coverage. To be critical would like a shade more substance however this should develop with maturity. Super temperament, pleased to award her CC & BOB

2nd MacLellan & Hood’s FORYD PALOMAR ***, litter sister to 1st of slightly different stamp, a little smaller all through, raw but with lovely type; head is good length, parallels ok, good mask and chiselling, good ears for shape and size very slightly low set. Good neck, withers to develop, a shade long in loin. Proportionate bone and straight limbs, sweet character although needs to build a little in confidence

LB (1,0)

1st Mitchell’s GOLDMALI PARADOX, 2 years bitch of moderate type throughout equal length skull to muzzle although a little flared, parallels not quite, ok eye shape and colour although expression is slightly hard; good neck, topline, croup and body shape, stands over too much ground; somewhat erratic on the move but glimpses of good ground coverage; rather tense during proceedings, needs training

OB (1,0)

1st Brett’s GOLDMALI OVER THE RAINBOW, petite richly coloured female, nice type, excellent shape and overall impression, soundly constructed. Medium length of head, just a shade lacking in refinement, very good mask, split and pigment. Eyes a medium brown, could be more almond; very good neck, wither and croup, could be shorter coupled, proportionate bone, excellent stance on parallel limbs; nicely balanced in angles which showed in her brisk movement. Excellent temperament, very pleased to award her RCC

VB (1,0)

1st Unwin & Winter’s CH BONVIVANT GIGI SH.CM, a pleasure to judge this bitch again, now 10 years young. The current BCC record holder in the variety, I awarded Gigi her very first CC back in 2014. Quality throughout she has retained her excellent type, in lovely condition with super neck, withers and topline, head has strengthened a little over the years but this doesn’t detract from her many virtues. Stands four square, excellent movement and temperament. Thank you for bringing her, BVIB
