Staffordshire Bull Terriers 9TH January 2022 Judge: Stuart Foster (Tusselstaff)

In advance of the individual critiques I would just like to start by thanking the Society for their kind invitation to judge Staffordshire Bull Terriers. It was an excellent venue with a fantastic atmosphere. The weather was cold, but the hospitality was warm. As always, a massive thank you to each and every exhibitor who gave up their day to travel far and wide for my opinion. The shows wouldn’t (and couldn’t) be the same without you all. First champ show of the year and although no CCs for the breed today the entry was still a great one with plenty of quality dogs on show.

1st MAYNESTAFF SMOOTH CRIMINAL

Tidy black brindle pup who was still quite raw as can be expected at this age. Having said that he does have a lovely headshape with dark eyes, correct dentition and clean in the lip giving an overall pleasing expression. He is well boned with a good front of decent width and when viewed from above he has enough spring of rib, pleasing profile when viewed side on and nicely angulated rear quarters. On the move he took some time to settle before being able to assess movement, but perseverance paid off. Look forward to seeing him in a few months as he matures.

2nd ZAKDAN DEVIOUS DEVIL

Not dissimilar in style to 1st and with many similar attributes which caused me some head scratching at the time. This black brindle youngster has a typical headshape, nice length of muzzle, decent underjaw, clean lipped and a good bite. He has enough depth to brisket, pleasing side profile for a youngster, enough rib and enough angulation at rear. He started off a little unconfident on the move but eventually settled. Again, another nice youngster who I would expect to progress well.

1st BRIGANAH SMOOTH OPERATOR

Quality black brindle dog who possesses a strong but clean head, nice ratio of muzzle, dark eyes and neat ears which he has a tendency to hold back, and correct mouth. Well boned, he has a straight front, well balanced body proportions, ok in the loins and good bend of stifle. Another who started off a little unsettled though after some coaxing by his handler he soon settled into his stride. Nice dog and pleased to award him Reserve Best Dog

2nd LUTHAIS LOCH TAY

Pleasing black brindle dog who has overall more substance than 1st. His head is strong but not overdone, good muzzle to skull ratio, neat ears, correct dentition, all making for a pleasing expression. He was presented in good condition, a compact package with straight front of ample width, well off for bone and tidy feet. Side profile was ok, he stands four square and has a powerful rear. Handled well. Close decision with 1st

1st ILLORI BACK CHAT

Super looking back brindle dog who is clean as a whistle all-round. He possesses a pleasing headshape, good skull to muzzle ratio, neat ear set, correct bite and no fleshiness in the flews. Up on the leg, he has a true front, ample brisket, good bone all round, no weakness at pasterns, good length of upper arm, nice spring of rib and light in the loins. Well angulated rear quarters gave him forward drive while holding a level topline on the move, ample bend of stifle and good length to hocks all add to a pleasing picture. Moved and handled very well. He is well toned and was presented in tiptop condition.

2nd ALPORT BOLD RULER

Attractive black brindle dog who was probably stronger all round than 1st. Nice headshape, not overdone, good length of muzzle, tidy rose ears, would prefer a darker eye. Straight front with well laid-back shoulders, ample spring of rib and powerful rear. I would have liked him fitter and movement was not his fortune today as he played his handler up badly on the move

1st DRINGSHAW ATHOS

Now I could just write my critique for this dog as WOW and leave it at that but that would be unfair so let me go into more detail. Stunning red and white pied with classic headshape, pleasing skull to muzzle ratio, neatest of rose ears, dark eye, clean in the lip with no hint of fleshiness and correct scissor bite. He has the best of fronts with ample brisket, legs well boned with no weakness at pasterns and tidy feet all just add to the picture. Viewed from above he has a strong neck flowing into withers, plenty of rib, light in the loins and well-muscled rear quarters. I could have pushed down all day and there would be no weakness. Side profile is just as pleasing with underline flowing into tight tuck up. Standing four square he is rock solid. A super blend of bull and terrier, he absolutely demands your attention, constantly up on his toes and like a tightly coiled spring he is just waiting for any opportunity to be released from the stack. Absolutely ticked all the boxes for me and fully deserved his top honours. Thank you for bringing him and there will always be room available on my sofa for this lad. Best Dog and Best of Breed. Well done

2nd ASSILIO LISBON LION

Quality red with white dog, very much my type with cleanest of heads, dark eye, neat ear placement, unexaggerated proportions to muzzle and correct dentition. He is a smaller all-round package than 1st with correct front and shoulder placement, pleasing side profile with clean underline and is well tucked up, powerful rear, ample bend of stifle and correct rear angulation. Handled well and presented in fit hard condition he was just unlucky to meet 1st in this class

Standard black brindle dog, possessing clean head, dark enough eye and correct bite. He has enough width to front, ample spring of rib, level topline and good bend of stifle. Handled well and moved ok

Puppy Bitch 13 (1)

It was a great surprise to turn and see such a huge class of pups entering the ring. A class of mixed type and maturity levels. I always find it difficult to judge pups as feel guilty that I can’t give a place to them all, who doesn’t love a Stafford pup, lots of great examples in the class but unfortunately only 5 places to give out

1st TILLCARR FIRE INGMA

What a little stunner. This black brindle girl took my eye straight away in what was a lovely class of pups. She has a super headshape, feminine but not lacking in strength, well proportioned skull to muzzle ratio, darkest of eyes and correct scissor bite all making for an adorable expression. Front was straight with ample width, she has good bone, no weakness at pasterns and tidy feet, correct shoulder placement and well developed spring of rib for age, Viewed from above and side on she stood four square and is bang on standard, rear quarters are well angulated, good bend of stifle and correct hocks. She was handled very well and there was great rapport between her and her handler. In the final line up, she was up against some stiff competition but it’s fair to say I was pretty smitten with her and was constantly drawn back. Beautiful bitch with a bright future who I was pleased to award Best Bitch, Best Opposite Sex and Best Puppy and later heard she went on to be placed Terrier Group 3 in a fantastic line up of pups. Wish she was mine

2nd ILLORI CONSTELLATION

Another cracking pup. This super looking black brindle bitch has a very attractive headshape, neat ears which she uses well, dark round eye, clean in lip and correct bite. Plenty of lift on this girl, her front is straight and true, enough rib and depth of brisket for age, good lay of shoulder and level topline. She has a super profile for one so young and moved with ease both ways. Moved and handled very well, another pair who work well together. One of the most difficult decisions on the day but will watch her progress with interest and think she will have a bright future.

1st GEORDIESTAFF NEE BOTHA

Attractive black brindle with nice headpiece, good length of muzzle, ample stop, dark well-set eye and correct dentition. She stands foursquare, is well balanced from all angles, straight front, good rib, level topline and light in the loins. A feminine bitch who worked well with her handler. One I can see that I’ve not really appreciated from ringside before. Presented in good condition, thanks for bringing her and pleased to award her Reserve Best Bitch and Best Special Beginner.

2nd FARDELN DEAR JESSIE

Standard bitch with strong but clean headpiece, neat ear set and correct bite. Her front is of ample width with well-placed shoulders, good depth of brisket and strong rear. She was difficult to assess on the day as her handler struggled to stand her and walk her.

 1st SKYLAND RATATOUILLE

Very appealing black brindle bitch who when standing four square catches your eye. Typical headshape, good length of muzzle and ample stop, dark round eye, rose ears and mouth was correct. Plenty of width to front, good length of neck, wide shoulders tapering over to nice spring of rib, light in the loin and strong back end. Handled well, she moved out with drive and purpose but seemed to lose interest in the final line up

2nd JASAMARCH DITSY DIVA

Attractive black brindle bitch with similar attributes to 1st. Clean in the head, clearly feminine, neat rose ears which she uses well, dark well-placed eye and good bite. Pleasing front which shows width and depth of brisket, nice amount of lift, good upper arm placement and tidy feet. She holds a level topline on the move and has good angulation to front and rear. Moved and handled well she was just unlucky to meet 1st today

Very attractive white bitch shown in fit condition. She has a pleasing head, neat ears, dark eyes, clean lipped with correct bite and strong underjaw all making for super expression. Presenting a good blend of bull and terrier she has a straight front of good angulations, no weakness at pasterns, tidy feet, good length of upper arm and ample spring of rib, well-muscled hams and presented in tip top condition. Lovely bitch who I thought highly of but in the final line up but she looked like she had lost interest and didn’t want to be there.

2nd CADARNBULL THE SIXTH SENSE

Dark brindle bitch, clean in the head with dark enough eye, good muzzle ratio and correct bite. Her front is straight with enough width, good spring of rib, strong backend, good bend of stifle. Moved ok
