SIBERIAN HUSKIES

Thank you to the committee for the invitation to judge at this lovely show, and to all the exhibitors for a fabulous entry. As I’ve said on previous occasions judging is often about compromising, which sometimes means putting up a dog that you feel could be improved in certain aspects but has many other virtues. Siberians can be a very challenging breed to judge and on this occasion there were some difficult decisions to make, especially in almost all the bitch classes where the depth of quality was certainly impressive. I could happily have taken so many of these girls home, including some that went unplaced.

It was interesting to find that a lot of my winners were from a certain Canadian working line or had the line behind them to some degree.

There was a mixture of types, but this is to be expected and I do not believe that Siberians must all look the same. Different lines can have their own unique characteristics, yet are still within the breed standard.

In this athletic breed I expected to find most of them in fit condition and I was not disappointed as most of them were carrying firm muscle and only a couple with slight excess weight.

Most dogs were in coat to some degree, although some were obviously losing their coats, and at this time of year I would expect to have found more naked dogs. Presentation was good, with all but a couple of dogs clean and well groomed. I still fail to understand why anyone would bring a dirty dog into the ring.

On day four of the show it appeared the ground had lots of interesting smells, which was appreciated by some of the dogs but not their handlers!

Minor Puppy Dog (2)

1. Inukshuk O'naniitchuk Kulu (Miss A V Bryson)

B/W, brown eyes. Two litter brothers in this class, this one was more compact than his brother and was steadier on the move which gave him the class, although not quite as good a topline and croup as his brother. Typical head and in good coat. The differences between the brothers are marginal but movement was the deciding factor today.

2. Inukshuk O'aningan (Miss A V Bryson)

G/w pie, brown eyes, good expression, pleasing outline, nicely balanced with good angulation but today was not as well co-ordinated on the move as his brother. I feel that this one may have more potential for the future although if they continue to be in the same class they will no doubt often change places.

Puppy Dog (6, 2 absent)

1. Elleonia Unbreakable Heart (Miss D E Seward)

G/W, blue eyes. Tall and rangy boy, not wearing his best coat today but has good balance and angulation, pleasing expression, correct earset, level topline with correct slope to croup, good tail carriage. Steady on the move with a good stride, plenty of potential to do well in the future.

2. Inukshuk O'naniitchuk Kulu

3. Inukshuk O'aningan

Junior Dog (5, 1)

1. Trailhunters Polar Breeze for Janskcoo (Miss J Cooper) DCC & Best Junior.

White, brown eyes, not quite 13 months old so has a lot of maturing to do but he had most of what I was looking for. Beautiful head with ideal earset, almond shaped eyes giving attractive, mischievous expression. So well balanced with ideal proportions, correct angulation front and rear, good feet and pasterns, level topline with slight arch over loin and correct slope to croup, good tail carriage. Initially was a little unsettled on the move but the more he moved the better he became, with a lovely flowing stride in profile and was true on the out and back. In the challenge he pulled out all the stops to beat the more mature dogs and thoroughly deserved the DCC. I look forward to watching his progress as he matures.

2. Pelenrise Don't Stop Moving JW (Mrs P & Mrs H Taylor & Taylor-Morris)

B/W, brown eyes. Lovely head and expression with almond shaped eyes, high set ears, very well balanced with correct angulation, good topline, croup and tail carriage. In lovely bloom and wearing his best coat, super movement with ground covering stride. This is a boy who, due to his luxurious coat, really needs hands on to be fully appreciated. I asked for him to be called in to challenge for the RCC, however due to a mix up I was advised that the second in this class was ineligible, although upon checking after completion of judging I found this not to be the case, so I can only apologise to his handler.

3. Elleonia Unbreakable Heart

Yearling Dog (2, 1)

1. Arctictreks Running Man (Mr C Boswell)

G/W, blue eyes. Rangy boy with good angulation, balance and outline. Level topline, good tailset, he was a little unsettled on the move today but overall a nice dog who could do well in the future. Stood alone in this class but deserved his first place.

Graduate Dog (5, 1)

1. Bifrost Chayka Sounds (J R M Foard)

Dark G/W, blue eyes. Well balanced with lovely front, feet and pasterns, good outline, topline, arch over loin and tailset. Took a while to settle on the move but once he did he moved soundly.

2. Inneska Malachite (Mr & Mrs J & D McInnes)

Dk G/W, parti eyes. Lovely head and expression, almond shaped eyes, good earset, pleasing outline, balanced angulation, moved very soundly. I feel he will take some time to mature but has lots of potential.

3. Azgard Padron of Inukshuk (Miss A V Bryson)

G/W, brown eyes. Quite tall but has a good outline and is well balanced with good topline and tailset. Moved freely in profile but when viewed coming towards he was slightly loose in the pasterns today.

Post Graduate Dog (6)

1. Zawkkast Ex Lax (Mr T & Mrs S Hart)

G/W, blue eyes. Super head, almond shaped obliquely set eyes giving the desired expression, good earset when he did decide to put them up. Ideal outline, level topline with slight arch over the loin and slight slope to croup, very well balanced. Strode out well when settled. He was a little distracted today but a lovely example of the breed who could do very well.

2. Bifrost Addler's Theory (J R M Foard)

B/W, blue eyes, good expression, high set ears, pleasing outline and balanced angulation, well proportioned, moved well when settled.

3. Cryanreuch Stargazer (Mr C Boswell)

G/W, brown eyes. Good earset and pleasing expression with almond shape eyes. Quite rangy but is well balanced with good angulation all round, moved with a good stride.

Limit Dog (9, 2)

1. Icynights Feeling Good at Kedalita (Mr D, Miss R V & Mr C Tapper & Leyland)

White, brown eyes. Super outline, excellent proportions and balance, correct depth of chest, level topline with arch over the loin and correct slope to croup giving good tailset. Moved with a flowing stride in profile and was true on the out and back. His ears are slightly wider set than I would prefer which makes his head look slightly plain, but he has fabulous conformation and movement and on the day was a clear winner of this class.

2. Siberiadrift Secret Realm (Mrs E, Mrs K & Miss P Ranby & Hughes)

G/W, blue eyes. Attractive head and expression, good earset and almond shaped eyes. Well balanced outline with good topline, arched loin and good tailset. Moved freely and covered the ground well.

3. Eversepp Fireball (Miss Z M Thomas)

G/W, blue eyes, handsome boy who is quite strong in head but still has a good expression and correctly set ears. Angulation is correct front and rear, topline is level and has the desired slight arch over the loin and correct slope to croup giving correct tail carriage. He is more well off for bone than some but an obvious athlete who covered the ground easily in profile and was absolutely true on the out and back.

Open Dog (6)

1. Forstal's Inola (Ms S, Ms S & Ms A Leich, Leich & Koops)

B/W, bi eyed. Lively boy who was enjoying himself! Pleasing head with mischievous expression, almond shaped eyes, correct earset. Super angulation, level topline , good feet and pasterns, slightly more compact then some but well proportioned and balanced, presenting a picture of athleticism. Lovely mover both in profile and on the out and back. Remains a favourite and was a contender in the challenge.

2. Ch Siberiadrift Keep The Love for Zimavolk JW ShCM (Miss J Allen)

R/W. Pleasing head and expression, almond shaped eyes, well set ears, balanced angulation, good feet and pasterns, level topline, slight slope to croup and good tail carriage. Lovely coat, effortless movement. A pleasure to go over this lovely boy again now he is in his prime.

3. Shaytaan's Doctor Watson at Ceannabeinne (Imp Can) (Mr H H & Mrs J M Wakker)

White, brown eyes. Well constructed athletic boy who covers the ground easily with a long stride. Good expression, fabulous outline with lovely angulation all round, level topline held well on the move with the required arch over the loin, correct slope to croup and good tailset.

Veteran Dog or Bitch (5)

1. Rykalov's Sparks at Wightflight (Ms J D Platt) RCC

Dk G/W D, blue eyes. Lovely head with good earset, fabulous expression with almond shaped obliquely set eyes, ideal angulation all round, excellent topline with slight arch over loin, correct tail carriage and slope to croup. Lovely proportions with super outline, and at 10 ½ years old he still has great feet and pasterns. He was certainly enjoying himself but once he settled into his stride he covered the ground beautifully and was sound on the out and back. His condition and athleticism belying his age, he is a perfect example of how this breed can go on improving well into veteran years, loved him and was pleased to award him RCC.

2. Icebex Yippee Ki Yay (Miss R Cunningham)

B/W pie B, blue eyes. Feminine with lovely head and expression, correct earset, ideal angulation and balance, correct feet and pasterns, level topline, slight arch over loin and correct slope to croup, moved freely and soundly.

3. Trailhunters Miki (Miss N V & Miss R March & Smith)

G/W pie B, brown eyes. Super head and expression, well set ears, correct angulation, good feet and pasterns. Moved very well with a good stride and kept her topline, although on the stand she had a tendency to dip her topline slightly. One I have judged a few times and always liked, I believe that at the age of 11 she was the oldest dog present and in super fit condition.

Good Citizen Dog Scheme (1)

1. Kobuk Foxtail Lily (Mrs S Crowther)

R/W B, brown eyes, feminine head, in good coat, moved well, was slightly overlong in the loin.

2. Inukshuk Quinuituq O'north (Miss A V Bryson)

Dk G/W, brown eyes, sister to the first, also feminine with almond shaped eyes and in good coat, moved well, just at this stage not quite the balance of her sister but it will be interesting to see how they compare as they develop.

G/W, bi eyed. Top quality youngster of almost 12 months. Gorgeous head and expression with almond shaped eyes and perfect earset. Beautiful outline, super angulation and balance, level topline, slight arch over loin, correct slope to croup giving correct tail carriage. Good feet and pasterns. On the move she covered the ground easily with an excellent stride and was true on the out and back. A contender in the challenge, she must have a bright future. Best Puppy.

2. Seppstasja's Lynx at Hysgiyddraig (Mrs G Bellcourt)

G/W, blue eyes, another lovely young girl with lots of potential. A similar age to the first but maturing more slowly. Pretty head, ears look quite large at present but are well set. Good balance and angulation, level topline with arch over loin, moved well in profile but slightly loose coming towards which will improve with maturity.

3. Forstal’s Jetska at Aurorasdream

Yearling Bitch (3,1)

1. Moon Eclipse Wilcza Dusza of Zimavolk (Imp Pol) (Miss J Allen)

2. Tsaritsa Tifas Cougar at Pocketsibes (Dr K & Mr J Brown)

G/W, blue eyes. All the qualities of her sister who was first and there was very little to choose between them so it was a difficult decision. Pretty head, good earset, super angulation and balance, moved well.

3. Tsaritsa Pantera at Hysgiyddraig (Mrs G Bellcourt)

B/W pie, bi eyed. Super expression, ears a little larger than those of her two sisters but still a lovely head, excellent outline and balance, good topline, croup and tail carriage, ideal proportions, moved well.

Limit Bitch (12, 2)

1. Icynights Devils Desire (Ms S Jones) BCC & BOB

B/W, brown eyes. Outstanding girl with classically beautiful head and expression, so feminine with almond shaped obliquely set eyes, ears set high and ideal size. Wonderful outline with ideal proportions and balance, perfect angulation front and rear, correct depth of chest, excellent topline with just the right arch over the loin and slope to croup, correct tailset, super feet and pasterns. On the move she floats over the ground, with a fabulous stride in profile and is true on the out and back. To complete the picture she was wearing her best coat. She pulled out all the stops both in the class and the challenge, a real superstar. Honoured to award BCC & BOB.

2. Zarchenski Taboo Lornabo at Tsaritsa (Mr & Mrs Biddlecombe) RCC

Cream/W, brown eyes. Beautiful head with almond shaped eyes and super earset, excellent angulation, balance and proportions, ideal topline with slight arch over loin, correct croup and tail carriage. Lovely feet and pasterns, on the move she covered the ground very smoothly and was totally sound on the out and back. In good coat, pleased to award her the RCC in very strong competition, no doubt she will win top honours in the future.

3. Trailhunters Fox Tor (Miss N V & Miss R March & Smith)

G/W pie, brown eyes. Super head and expression although her asymmetrical markings can deceive the eye. Good feet and pasterns, her topline looks much better on the move as when standing she can appear a little flat in the croup, however she is a dog that is best judged on the move as everything falls into place and she covers the ground easily.

Open Bitch (10)

Dk G/W, brown eyes. Gorgeous head and expression with almond shaped obliquely set eyes. Super proportions, angulation correct front and rear, level topline, correct arch over loin and sloping croup, correct tail carriage, super feet and pasterns, in great bloom with lovely coat. A real athlete, she excelled on the move, eating up the ground with a light footed stride and absolutely true on the out and back. She was certainly a contender in a very strong challenge line up and will always be one of my favourites.

2. Forstal's Crystal with Elleonia JW (Miss D E Seward)

G/W pie, blue eyes. Feminine, pretty head and lovely expression, high set ears, almond shaped eyes, correct angulation front and rear, good feet and pasterns, ideal topline with slight arch over loin and correct slope to croup, effortless movement. A veteran of 8 years, but unable to compete for BV as she was not entered in the Veteran class.

Intense mischievous expression, good earset, super angulation and balance, correct feet and pasterns, good topline, arch over the loin and sloping croup giving correct tail carriage. Impressive on the move, since I last judged her she has matured beautifully and is now in her prime.
