NORTHERN AND EASTERN COUNTIES PAPILLON CLUB CH SHOW

LEEDS 23rd JULY 2022

It was a pleasure to judge this Papillon Club show, a dream seldom realised for many. The classes were well filled and the entry of 113 was fabulous. A free ring did not become available so it was not until Raewynn Dowsett had completed her judging of the Leeds entry that the Club show began. It was quite a long day for judge, exhibitors and dogs so thank you to everyone who entered and stayed the course! I first judged the breed in 2016 and most of the dogs were completely unknown to me. Having said that what a treat to find that my Veteran Dog and Bitch RCC had been shown under me six years ago and won well.

VETERAN (9) 1 abs

What a great class to kick off the day. 8 golden oldies strutting their stuff, belying their ages. Added together their ages totalled 78 years…..definitely something worth mentioning for the breed.

1st Letch’s CONYSLUCK MASTER PIP

No one had told this R/S/W that he was approaching 14 years. So spry and went round the ring with a light, positive gait. Lots of style with head carried proudly and nice tail set. Liked the balance of his skull to muzzle and eyes were dark and kind. Good ears. His topline is still firm and correct angles front and rear provided him good reach and drive. Shown in good coat. The oldest in the class but his placing was not based on this. He was deserving and I pulled him into my final 5. BEST VETERAN IN SHOW After judging I discovered this old boy won under me 6 years earlier aged 8. He still impresses.

2nd Letch & Buckley-Waters’ CONYSLUCK MR PICKLES

I see that this Black/White has the same dam as winner and I saw similarities. A glamorous boy, well coated. Large mobile ears set on a head that was rounded in skull with an alert expression. Slender bone that fitted his frame. Caught my eye as he circled the ring. Lovely posture showing off his clean outline. Neck, shoulders, topline and tailset all blended. Soon to be 11.

1st Olof’s TARNOCK SWEEP THE BOARD

7 months R/S/W who showed with great self belief. Typical head with large ears set well on slightly rounded skull. Black nose, good teeth. Round brown eyes. Liked his size and substance. Small with fine bone and he looked balanced. His coat texture was silk like. Best mover in the class. He stepped out with accuracy on his up and down and looked smart in profile with excellent tail set and carriage.

2nd Keown’s KEOMANDI FAIRY KING

Another promising puppy. A neatly made youngster with good length to height ratio. Handsome head with large erect ears. Medium brown eyes. This R/S/W was only 6 months, so a month younger than winner and therefore not so advanced in his development. This age group can see lots of changes between 6 and 9 months and for now he just rose slightly over the loin..

1st Hector’s ODYSSEY ELITE PILLANGO AT TAISETT (IMP)

Impressive R/S/W who gave a good account of himself and at 11 months will soon leave the puppy classes behind. Good head proportions with roundness to skull. mobile ears, medium dark eyes giving bright expression. Hair feet. Sleek coat. An accomplished mover who went round the ring effortlessly. He maintained a level topline with all the work going on underneath. Good reach and drive. A puppy full of quality whose future looks promising. Came back in and won BEST PUPPY DOG and saw off his competitors with his light, fluent movement and breed correctness. Brought him into final 5

2nd Green & Cooper’s GLENDIAN BLAKE AT WILACHANS

Another smart R/S/W. Same age. Close examination found lots to like. Appealing face features. Rounded skull, large ears. Black nose. Good teeth. Medium eyes set low in skull. Neatly made with enough neck, good angles front and rear. Slender bone and hair feet. His coat was admirable and he matched winner well and pushed all the way. Just not so controlled on the move. I am sure they will have great fun battling in the future.

1st Anderson’s NORTHLYTE RING OF BRODGAR

Still a puppy at 10 months and the youngest in the class but this B/S/W looked good on the initial go around and didn’t disappoint on the table. A nice looking boy with head features that combined to create an appealing expression. Scored for ears , skull, eyes, stop and nose length. Sensible temperament. He was bright, very biddable and did all that was asked of him. Free and easy mover going well in all directions. Coat coming in nicely. One of two litter brothers shown today…..this one gets my vote.

2nd Challenger’s SKYVANA DEVIL IN DISGUISE WITH LYVEDEN

Jaunty Tricolour who showed like a trooper. Always an advantage when you have one that is switched on to showing. Respectable in all areas. Dark eyes, splayed ears and fine foreface. Elegant on the move with head high, firm backline and tail arched over back. His movement was light and fluent. Liked his size…very tidy. Although his expression appealed just thought winner had the edge.

1st Montgomery’s ELMARAINE REMY MARTIN AT CARROLLRYAN

At 13 months this petite Tricolour showed us his fun side. Such a show off. A bit erratic on occasion when he followed his own agenda but when he put his mind to the job in hand you could see how pleasing he was in outline. Adequate neck, sloping shoulders, level topline and high set plumed tail. Good looking and a wealth of coat added glamour. He brought a smile.

1st Cooper’s WILACHANS CODIE

Reserve in Junior dog. A R/S/W who had the better body and movement to win this class. Good stance showing off his clean, balanced outline. Decent ears and tail. Just would like more refinement in muzzle.

2nd Maskell & Waller’s KAZKELL CRACKER JOKE

15 months old Black/White. A size bigger than winner and not such an accomplished mover. Needs to settle and today he looked immature despite being a couple of months older than 1. In his favour round, dark, medium eyes, good dentition, lots of flowing coat.

3rd Sellick’s INIXIA READY TO RUMBLE

1st Borg’s ELENDIL CRUSADER

2 years old classy Black/white with striking good looks. He seemed a little distracted in the class but with his qualities and ability to move effortlessly he could not be denied the win. When he came back into the challenge he pulled out most of the stops and showed me what he could do when he wanted to. With his flowing silky coat and handsome head he draws you in at first glance and on closer inspection you can really appreciate his head features. Good proportion of skull to muzzle and a gentle expression. Used his big ears to advantage. Liked his size. The more I saw of him the more I liked. A class act who took the RESERVE CC. If he gave just a little bit more could go further.

2nd Green & Cooper’s WILACHANS GOBLIN KING

Attractive R/S/W with plenty of confidence. Good for size and he was well made and moved accordingly. Big ears. For me he just lacked a little in expression. But I went away with a high opinion of him.

1st Stanbury’s INIXIA MADE BY DESIGN

Loved the size of this Black/white. At almost 3 he was presented in lush coat that was in pristine condition and he looked a picture as he flitted around the ring. Proud head carriage with equally confident tail positioned over back. So typical in head with dark eyes set low in a head finished off by large nicely placed fringed ears. Moving he impressed with good parallel rear action. He won with a bit to spare

2nd Walsh’s PUREPIXIE RED ADMIRAL

A R/S/W who struck a decent pose standing but could not match the winners exceptional outline. I felt he was carrying a bit of excess weight and with his wealth of coat his body shape was a little masked. Large ears that were well fringed and his outlook appealed. If moved too fast can high step.

1st Mowatt’s IOTASTAR GREAT ADVENTURE

A tricolour pin up boy shown in full flowing coat. So glamourous but beyond that is a well made boy with much to admire. Scores on head with masculine yet soft expression coming from dark round eyes. His ears are excellent, large and heavily fringed. Has lots of style and he swept round the ring putting his good construction to good use in a free flowing action. Turned out a treat. In my cut for the CC. Hope his success continues.

2nd Thornton’s JAYBERRY WINTER SOLSTICE COLLNESS

Shapely tricolour that impressed with his coordinated movement. Presented a free flowing outline with no lumps or bumps and retained this elegance on the move with firm backline and excellent tail. Head properties satisfied with eyes, ears, stop and muzzle all as required. Well groomed coat.

1st Ryan & Roosens’ U KNOCK ME OFF MY FEET DAYDREAM BELIEVERS WITH FEORLIG (IMP BEL)

Well coated Tricolour who came into the ring and owned it. I liked him on first glance and my admiration grew as the class went on. Handsome head with dark eyes, large fringed ears and an expression full of cheek. Well balanced with fine bone that fitted his frame and had good ratio of height to length. So light on his feet. He embodied ‘tripping the light fantastic’ and quick stepped around the ring. Head high, level topline and correct tail. A cheeky chap who had all the right attributes to put him ahead of the competition. Only 16 months old, so what a rosy future he has ahead. DOG CC & BEST IN SHOW

2nd Morrell’s TRICIANBRI HARRY BEAU FOR TEMELORA

4 year old red/sable/white. Loved the name and yes he was sweet. Expressive face with shining eyes. Liked the way he used his ears. Attractive body shape, lower to ground than 1 who had the extra elegance in profile. No slouch and carried himself with style. Topline firm. Papillons seem to mature steadily and then carry their years well and this boy looked in his prime. Splendid coat and furnishings

1st Morrell’s SERENGLADE LEAP OF FAITH FOR TEMELORA

Such a pity there were only a few Phalenes. This easy going 6 year old Black/White ended up BEST PHALENE IN SHOW. Such a gentle face framed by well set completely dropped ears carried close to the head. Medium, dark expressive eyes. Lovely to go over as he is well made throughout and he did not disappoint on the move as he stepped out with elegance and purpose. Hare feet. I hope the Phalene fanciers continue to champion these little Night Moths. Coming from a breed with Spaniel ears I was able to fully appreciate this variety.

2nd Stanbury’s PINKMEAD TIME LORD AT INIXIA

A Tricolour with a good disposition. In fact I had few shrinking violets in the whole entry. Still a baby at 13 months and needed more body weight as he looked lean. Lovely dark eyes. Could not match the movement of winner who held too many aces.

VETERAN (4) Another class of timeless seniors showing age is just a number

1st Keown’s CH JORGEALIN MOON MAGIC SHCM

The biggest surprise of the day. Won this class, the Champion class and eventually the RESERVE CC. When filling in the certificate the name rang a bell. It seems that 6 years ago I awarded her the RCC (her first major win) from the Yearling class when she was in the ownership of her breeder. Since 2016 she has gained her title and amassed, I understand, 8 CC and 4 RCC. I liked her then and my high regard for her is still intact. Such a pretty Red/white with a great face full of character. Dark eyes set in a head with rounded skull and well placed big ears. All the components to make a stunning Papillon headpiece. Her construction is sound and she moved with precision in a collected fashion. Fine bone and hare feet. Sweet temperament and to top it all she was in lovely coat. Approaching her 8TH birthday and in this form should hold her own in good company for some time yet.

2nd Goude’s MANAWYDDAN INCA TINKA

Tidy little Red/white with clean sweep from head to tail. Looked good on the go around. Dark brown eyes set low in a feminine head topped by big ears. Hangs on her owners every word. At 8 should grace many more Veteran classes

1st Ryan, Roosens & Goessens’ UPPERCUT DAYDREAM BELIEVERS WITH FEORLIG (IMP BEL)

Only 7 months old but this bonny Tricolour showed like an old hand. Head properties are correct and just right for her age. Well set ears, dark eyes. Has a strong ring presence and catches your attention and keeps it. Her balance is flawless with a clean sweep from head to tail. Liked her size. Went through her paces with confidence and moved true in all directions. Gives her all and born to show.

2nd Whitehill’s LILACROSE TRI THIS TALENT

A real baby at 6 months and 1 day. Precious little Tricolour who performed well on her first outing. No nerves and full of herself. A pretty girl who appealed in head and expression. Nice size and fine bone. She was very sociable on the table but concentration is hard when you are this young. A proper little madam. Nice deportment just needing to settle.

1st Robb’s GLENIREN DADDY’S STARMAKER

I started listing the virtues of this little R/S/W and it dawned on me that I was simply going through the points in the breed standard. I think it best to simply say she represents all that is excellent in a Papillon and twinned with her sparkling personality she is a stand out. She looks good and knows it, is made well and shows it, she is a star and shines. At first glance you can see she excels in head and stands willingly showing off her excellent construction. But on the move she comes into her own. Floats like butterfly is a well used cliché but it describes perfectly her light, effortless movement. At 10 months old she is still developing but I could not go past her. BEST PUPPY & BITCH CC. I watched the CC winners circling the ring together and it was a powerful impact. A Lovely pair of butterflies. The feminine bitch and the handsome male both presented so well and giving their all. A lovely dilemma choosing between them. It was the dog’s day being a tad more finished looking but their strengths matched each other. Stunning duo.

2nd Whitehill & Urwin’s AMICAE BELL OF THE BALL

Bright eyed and bushy tailed. Although only a month between 1 and 2 this 10 months tricolour looked a baby. Has plenty of time to develop and her foundations are good. Tidy body with complimentary angles front and rear allowing her freedom of movement. A quality coat coming in nicely. Alert expression coming from round eyes and good ear set. She was enjoying herself.

Junior should be a class containing potential stars waiting in the wings for maturity and their chance to shine.

1st Morrell’s ATHENA VOM SCHWABENHOF FOR TEMLORA (IMP DEU) NAF

One of two 10 months old Phalene sisters shown today. I favoured this one. A tricolour shown in fine fettle. Her coat shone. Felt good on the table with all parts merging smoothly so it was no surprise to find that she moved accordingly. Lovely rear. Refined head with dropped ears and appealing expression coming from dark eyes, good ear set. Will watch her career with interest.

2nd Griffith’s MANAWYDDAN TO A WILD ROSE

Hair-splitting decision and my notes on this Red/white are all positive. Attractive face with fine muzzle. Dark eyes. Feminine and petite with super movement. Her silky coat was in tip top condition and covered a well constructed body. Large fringed ears added to her appeal. Good showgirl with ring presence. Should continue to feature in the cards.

1st Stone & Isherwood’s TONKORY WAITING IN THE WINGS

A R/S/W with an engaging personality. Nice head proportions with dark, round eyes and big fringed ears. A confident mover and covered the ground convincingly in a light fashion with tail carried over back. Presented in lovely order and her coat felt good to the touch. Balanced outline with firm topline and correct tailset.

2nd Hill’s CARAIDEAS COPPELIA

Another R/S/W who was so pretty with dark, round eyes that shone. Ears carried correctly and were well fringed. Good spring of ribs. Hair feet. A decent mover just felt her a bit on the heavy side whereas winner had the crisper outline and was more balanced.

1st Proctor’s LYNFLYER RAINBOW CATCHER

17 month old Red/White who came reserve in Junior but was able to hold her own here. Sunny personality and she was putting her all in. Looked good in her quality coat and had facial features that appealed. Very pretty. Move freely with self belief carrying head proudly and tail up and over her back.

2nd Wells & Brown’s METAMORPHIC FLYTE

Tricolour only 10 months old and giving away a lot in development. Cute as a button and very switched on. Coat coming in nicely. Would have looked more at home with her age group.

1st Walklett’s FARTHINGHALL’S ENIGMA FOR ANGULLYON NAF

Easy on the eye R/S/W who stood alone and made good use of the empty ring. Animated and moved with accuracy. Coat was silky and soft to the touch and she sported large nicely angled ears and had nice expressive eyes. I would prefer her more petite.

1st Buckley-Waters/ Buckley’s JORGEALIN MOON DUST FOR SEMPEFIDELIS

Very switched on Tricolour who was best mover in the class and this ability was twinned with good breed points. Attractive head with bright expression. Large ears, rounded skull. Fine bone. Hair feet. Lovely coat texture. Nice length to height ratio.

2nd Griffith’s BERESTEAD BELLE EPOQUE MANAWYDDAN

A good looking Black/white who also stepped out accurately. Good posture added elegance and with plumed tail carried over the back she presented a pleasing picture both standing and on the move. Thought 1 had the edge on balanced outline but with her fetching face features and soft silky coat she should always deserve to get a second look.

A glamorous Black/white showing well. Lots to like with lush silky coat, nice neck and shoulder s, round dark eyes, hare feet, well carried plumed tail, decent mover. Felt she had the edge on elegant outline.

2nd Wells & Brown’s METAMORPHIC VISTA

A quality Red/White. Fair of face and her eyes, ears, stop and muzzle were on point. She was enjoying herself and put up a good show. Moved around the ring with a spring in her step.

3rd Keown’s KEOMANDI AMBER MOON

1st Walsh’s JORGEALIN MOON STAR AT PUREPIXIE

This affix had a good day and several Jorgealin dogs appeared in the cards. The breeder should be justifiably proud to not only have bred but shared her quality dogs. I see this sweet faced R/S/W is younger sister to my RCC. The combination clearly worked. 6 years old and carrying a wealth of coat that I felt made her appear a tad stockier than she is. Underneath is a well shaped body with good neck, well sprung ribs and correct angulation front and rear. Great topline both when standing and on the move. Loved her head and expression and despite the lack of blaze her face appealed to me more than 2. In my final four for the CC.

2nd Morrell’s JOHNASTA GEORGIA FOR TEMELORA

Super temperament on this 2 year old Tricolour and she was close up. Proud head carriage circling the ring with style showing off her classic silhouette. Attractive head with large ears. Smart mover. 5 dogs entered by this exhibitor and they were all in the cards. Good job.

2. Ryan’s CH FEORLIG SMART COOKIE JW

A dignified 4 year old who never put a foot wrong. She looked good in her R/S/W silky coat and went so well. Scores on front and rear action and her shape is classic. I can fully understand she has many admirers as she exudes confidence and shows off her attributes. . Large mobile ears sit atop a rounded skull, medium dark eyes and decent stop. The more feminine outlook of winner pushed her into 2nd place but she is one that should never be overlooked. A lovely show off

1st Maskell’s RAYOL SPARKLING GEM

Liked the size of this 4 year old Black/White but she was rather portly. Dropped ears framed an angelic face with round, dark eyes. Mellow expression and she was super friendly. Well sprung ribs. Went well with good tail carriage.
