Boston & District Canine Society
I should like to extend my sincere thanks to the Officers and Committee of Boston & District Canine Society for inviting me to judge at this show. It was a very enjoyable day and I very much appreciated the opportunity of this appointment to assess some lovely dogs.
I would particularly like to thank the exhibitors of my fabulous English Setter entry and for trusting me with their dogs – thank you. Finally, huge thanks to my Stewards for their efficiency and support during my Judging.
English Setter:
Puppy Dog (6, 3abs):
1ST Mrs H S & Prof S M Stewart & Quenby, Tattersett Golden Sunrise: Upstanding dog of 9 months of age. Well balanced and beautifully presented. Standing he demonstrated a clean outline free of exaggeration. Good quality bone all through. A pleasing clean head. Correct, clean and complete dentition, well placed ears, clean neck into good forehand assembly, deep chest of adequate width, strong loin with well muscled hindquarters. Moved well, accurate both fore, aft and in side profile.
2ND Mrs L Taylor, Wansleydale Maybee: A very nice young dog of 7 months of age – extremely ‘raw’ as one would expect. Of very good overall type, super head and expression, ears set low, dentition correct, clean and complete, the very best of forehand assemblies, chest deep, quality bone all through, well made hindquarters, moved well and soundly.
3RDMrs K, Mrs J & Mr G Whiting & Grant, Tattersett Many Clouds At Ormstiga
Post Graduate Dog (7, 3abs):
1ST Mrs A Hepburn, Tattersett Rainbow Legacy: A perfectly balanced and masculine example of the breed, presented super. He has very good quality bone all through. Very good head that was carried high when moving, with soft expression, dentition correct, clean and complete, clean muscular, slightly arched neck into well placed shoulders, good width and depth to brisket, elbows set down close to body, strong loin, muscled hindquarters with well bent stifles, moved very well.
2ND Mr S & Mrs H Wood, Juldeane Prime Suspect: I really liked the overall balance of this young dog of just 2 years of age – he had left his jacket at home today, devoid of any furnishings. Standing he demonstrated a clean outline free of exaggeration. Good quality bone all through. A pleasing clean head with defined stop and occipital protuberance. Muzzle strong.Correct, clean and complete dentition, well placed ears, clean neck into good forehand assembly, deep chest of adequate width, strong loin with well muscled hindquarters. Moved well, accurate both fore, aft and in side profile.
3RD Mrs A B & Mr S H Catton & Cook, Valsett Starlite Sky Storm With Ferngate
Open Dog (9, 3abs):
1ST Mrs A, Mrs K L & Ms T Phillips, Bryant & Watkins, Sh CH Glenmaurangi Star Man JW: Upstanding male of 4 years with so much ring presence – caught my eye straight away as he entered the ring. Of extremely good overall type, masculine without any coarseness and free from exaggeration. Very good head of correct proportions with defined eyebrows, ears set low, dentition correct, clean and complete, clean muscular neck clear but slight arch at crest into well placed shoulder and corresponding return of upper arm, good depth and width to brisket, elbows close to brisket, well sprung ribs and well ribbed back, strong loin, well made muscular hindquarters with clearly defined second thigh, tight, neat feet with short nails moved very well, sound and accurate in all planes and profiles. Best Dog & Best Of Breed.
2ND Mrs P & Mr G Harris & Hoeksema, Bridgella’s First Edition With Konakakela JW, Shcex, OSW: A firm favourite of mine whom I have Judged before. He is both handsome, upstanding and of very good breed type. Very masculine but not coarse or exaggerated in any way. At 4½ years of age, he is coming into his prime. One point of observation that I noticed whilst being shown and upon reflection from the picture taken for my records, he can be stood with his front assembly slightly too far forward, which in turn loses his topine. He has a firm topline which is held on the move. For me, he is a lovely example of the breed. Excellent head and expression, correct, clean and complete dentition, long, lean and muscular neck into well placed shoulders and corresponding return of upper arm, deep brisket of good width, short level back, strong hindquarters with well bent stifles, quality bone all through. Tight well-arched feet with short nails. On the move he was accurate in all planes and profiles demonstrating an open side-gate and correct tail action. Good quality coat. Reserve Best Dog
3RD Mr N S, Miss E M C & Mrs V L Bryant, Bryant & Hollis, Silvamoon Storm Trooper For Phenset JW
Puppy Bitch (6, 3abs):
1ST Mr & Mrs A Grimsdell, Tattersett Dark Amber: A bitch of 10 months of age. Who impressed me with her overall balance and breed type – she was also well presented. Lovely head of correctly proportions and carried high on muscular and lean neck, soft expression, ears set low, correct, clean and complete dentition, shoulders set well back, deep chest, body of optimum length, well made hindquarters, tight feet. On the move her movement was at times erratic and not flowing which I in part associated with her handler who had to almost battle with her around the show ring Best Puppy
2ND Mrs S D Loakes, Goldbirch Hearts Desire: Good honest type of bitch, of 8 months of age and still very raw, presented a very good clean profile when standing, pleasing feminine head and expression, dentition correct, clean and complete, neck of moderate length, good forehand assembly, well ribbed back, strong hindquarters. On the move I found her fore and hind movement not in harmony – she is still very young.
3RD Mrs L A Beasley, Wansleydale Mayflower
Junior Bitch (4, 1abs):
1ST Mrs V & Miss K Mcloughlin, Arabin Silver Panda: This bitch of nearly 14 months stood out for me in this class where we had age extremes from just into Junior to almost ready to leave Junior with a few months making such a difference. Very good overall type, well made all through, excellent head and expression, correct, clean and complete dentition, strong neck, well-placed shoulders, elbows on brisket, deep chest, in good coat moved well and soundly.
2ND Mrs G Skeggs-Gooch, Tawnymeade Thumbelina: Another bitch of 14 months of age. When standing she can look long cast. Lovely head of correct proportions, soft expression, ears set low, moderately deep muzzle, correct, clean and complete dentition, muscular and lean neck, shoulders set well back, deep chest, body of optimum length, well made hindquarters, tight feet. On the move she was sound.
3RD Mr D Hilditch, Barleymoats Summer Breeze
Post Graduate Bitch (4, 2abs):
1ST Mrs L A Beasley, Wansleydale Amaretto: A bitch of 4 years of age. What a truly lovely English Setter. I thought this bitch to be both elegant and impressive both standing and on the move. Lovely head of correct proportions with requisite eyebrows with soft expression, correct, clean and complete dentition, head carried high on muscular and lean neck, ears set low, well placed shoulder and corresponding return of upper arm, deep chest of good width, body of moderate length, strong loin of good width, hindquarters strong and muscular, tight neat feet with short nails. On the move she showed a free graceful action with her head held high portraying an ability to move endlessly with drive. I loved her breed specific tail action. I was very pleased to award her, without any hesitation Best Bitch.
2ND Mrs K, Mrs J & Mr G, Whiting & Grant, Tattersett Frankel’s Storm at Ormstiga: A well made bitch who was beautifully presented. Very clean and balanced outline, feminine head with soft expression, dentition correct, clean and complete, clean muscular neck into well placed shoulders, good width and depth to chest, elbows set close to brisket, strong loin, muscled hindquarters, moved very well.
Open Bitch (6, 2):
1ST Mr N S, Miss E M C & Mrs V L Bryant, Phenset Sparks Will Fly JW: A bitch of 4½ years of age presented in good overall condition. Very good head, correct, clean and complete dentition, excellent clean neck into well-placed shoulders, very good depth and width to chest, moderate well-muscled hindquarters – she was easily my class winner – on the move she was both sound and accurate.
2ND Mr & Mrs A Grimsdell, Tattersett Dark Honey: A bitch of just over 4 years of age. Of pleasing overall type, very good head and soft feminine expression, ears set low, dentition correct, clean and complete, good forehand construction, chest deep, good bone all through, well made hindquarters, stifles well bent. moved well.
