Reserve Bitch Challenge Certificate    Adnerbs Take A Chance On Me at Raajput (Dr M Chauhan)

Best Puppy    Adnerbs Not On Your Nellie Gobannium (Mr M D & Mrs T A Stark)

Best Veteran    Ch Carpaccio Jasper from Hamoura ShCM VW (Mrs W Starkey)

I was very honoured and pleased to be invited to judge this distinguished Dachshund variety at Crufts.

I was pleased with the quality of my overall entry but disappointed with some nervous temperaments especially in dogs that have previously received top honours. I am aware of a social media comment regarding top lines and ‘crippled’ hindquarters; I must respond and record that there were no problems with the top lines of my winners, and certainly there were no ‘crippled’ hind quarters in construction or action on the move. A sound temperament should be of greater importance to those concerned!

Class 1462. Veteran Dog

Entries: 5 Absentees: 3

1st Place    Ch Carpaccio Jasper from Hamoura ShCM VW (Mrs W Starkey) a smart 10 year old mature male who has a head with fine classic lines. Well made forequarters with a true front, with enough fore chest and pleasing tight elbows. Well made in overall body with good length and firm level top line with solid nicely let down hindquarters. Moved with purpose and the better in this class.

He has an attractive breed typical ‘all male’ head which is of pleasing shape and expression. Stands well with true front and firm substance with stable hindquarters. Not as precise in movement as 1st

Moved in typical puppy style but was steady and precise when settled. Best Puppy Dog.

2nd Place    Cedavoch Drizzle of Rain (Mr J & Ms K Andison & Peel) a well grown 8 month old very promising D/red bitch. She has an attractive feminine, typy head set well onto good length neck. Not as well defined in body lines as 1st needing to tighten in back and top-line. Great promise and development of bone and body. True front, enough fore-chest for age with desirable angles front and rear. Moved well in front with extension but not as strong in rear action as 1st.

3rd Place    Hampdach The Trooper (Ms C J Payton) another well-made Red male who has a pleasing head and is well grown in bone and body. Confident both standing and on the move. Just preferred forequarters of 1st & 2nd. . Pleasing in length of body and ok in top line. Hindquarters stable and well angled. Moved well in front but not as settled in rear action as 1st.

Breed typical in appearance having a handsome head set on a strong graceful neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Pleasing bone and muscular body of ideal length, spring, depth and proportions. Sound, true front and well-made forequarters with desirable fore-chest. Firm level top line leading to sound, strong angulated hindquarters of parallel width. Moved with true extension, parallel drive and with purpose, both in this class and in the challenge. Undeniably a super representative of the Breed. Dog CC and Best of Breed.

2nd Place    Ch Cwmdarhian Rocket Man (Mrs R & Mr C Williams & Moes) a striking 2½ year old Red male of obvious quality when standing. Handsome, masculine head set on strong, stylishly shaped neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Good length body with obvious fore-chest and looks to have a body with spring and depth and nicely angled hindquarters. Lacked confidence on the table and was difficult to go over and tended to be wary of his surroundings on the move, all of which cost him further consideration for top honours but rewarded his obvious quality with his placing in this class.

3rd Place    Cwmdarhian San Domenico at Glenariff (C Reynolds) a 2 year old of similar profile shape to 2nd. and making up a trio of excellent males. Particularly handsome head set on a good length, strong, elegant neck. Well made front and forequarters, pleasing body having spring and depth and a firm topline.
