Welsh Springer Spaniel Club Of South Wales

Breed: Spaniel (Welsh Springer)

Welsh Springer Club of South Wales Championship Show 6th February 2022

A great honour to be invited to judge a well-organised club show in the breed’s homeland. Many thanks to the committee for the warm welcome. It was a super venue and good to hear warm applause greeting the winners. I was pleased with the presentation and temperaments of the bitches here. The Limit and Open classes were full of quality. Best In Show, on the referee’s decision was Harrison’s Glenbrows Revolution. Best Puppy and Best Veteran went to the girls, Nyliram Telling Tales and my CC winner, Sh Ch Bushwacker Something About Mary.

Veteran Bitch (6:1)

What a lovely class to start the day. It was great to see the veterans in such good condition and still displaying so much quality.

1st Ritchie’s Sh Ch Slapesones Mouna JW

Now nine and still presents a super outline. Balanced in head with correct length of muzzle. Good reach of neck. Well boned through. She has well angulated shoulders. Firm in topline with well-turned stifles. She moved soundly. Looked very well today.

2nd Attwood’s Kylowen Demelza

Another looking well, smaller type but so balanced through. She has a strong neck of good length and a lovely layback of shoulder. Well angulated quarters. She moved well from the rear. In lovely condition.

3rd Pick’s Sh Ch Llon Lili Bengam

 Special Working Bitch (1)

1st Lyon’s Mymmsbrook Mimosa

Six years and looking well. Attractive head with kind eyes. Good neck and well laid shoulders. She has a good depth of body. Good width to her quarters, stifles are well turned and her hocks are nicely let down. She moved with drive from behind. Just a little proud of her tail today.

Minor Puppy Bitch (3:0)

1st Graham’s Nyliram Telling Tales

At 8 months is well bodied, well coated and nicely put together but not overdone in any way. Pleasing head with gentle expression. Clean neck of good length. She has a straight well boned front. Good depth and width to her ribs for her age. She has strength over her quarters and hocks are well let down. She moved well showing reach and drive. Best Puppy B and later Best Puppy in Show.

2nd Thomas’ Bowdonia Truly Scrumptious

Another good one of similar age. Balanced in head with dark brown eyes. Clean strong neck and well laid shoulders. Balanced in body with enough depth for her age. She has well angulated quarters. She moved soundly showing plenty of extension. Should go on to do well.

3rd Graham’s Nyliram The Moth Catcher

 Puppy Bitch (5:0)

1st Graham’s Nyliram Telling Tales

2nd Thomas’ Bowdonia Truly Scrumptious

3rd Lyon’s Mymmsbrook Mismo

Junior Bitch (4:0) – Tricky class to judge

1st Harrison’s Glenbrows Rhapsody

Well balanced and the most together in this class today. Well boned with good neck and layback of shoulder. Good round feet. Well developed in chest with good width and depth to her ribs. Good rear angulation with width to her thighs and hocks are nicely let down. She has a good tail set and moved well covering the ring efficiently.

2nd Lockie’s Benoveor Truly

A lot to like about this 12 months girl. Sweet head of correct proportions. Clean in neck with well-placed shoulders. Firm in topline and lovely tail set. Well angulated quarters give a balanced profile. She just needs to mature. Should go on to do well.

3rd Casey’s Tigerrock Lit De Roses

Yearling Bitch (3:0)

1st Harrison’s Glenbrows Paramour

Another good one from this successful kennel. This one, 19 months and well put together. Good head with correct length of muzzle and well placed ears. Well boned with clean neck and nicely sloping shoulders. Firm in topline, she has good width to her quarters and well turned stifles. She moved well going away from me.

2nd Ferguson’s Julita Raindance At Teaselwood

Feminine headed 20 month old. Lovely through with good head, neck and shoulders. She has enough depth for her age and moved soundly. Not the body and coat of the winner today but lots to like about her and time is on her side.

3rd Lockie’s Benoveor Truly

Novice Bitch (2:0)

1st Graham’s Nyliram Telling Tales

2nd Worth’s Sarabande Wild at Heart (Ai)

Two-year-old in good body and coat. Kind in eye. Clean neck of good length. Well angulated quarters. She moved well enough when settled. Intelligently handled to advantage.

Post Graduate Bitch (7:2)

1st Cooper’s Gilstonia Snow Moon

Lovely outline and type. Balanced in head and typical welsh expression. Clean neck of good length. Well boned but still feminine through. Balanced in body with good depth of chest. She has correct topline and tail set. Well angulated quarters with good turn of stifle. In good condition. Won two further classes today. I liked so much about her. Just lacked precision and reach on the move to challenge for top honours.

2nd Short’s Ferndel Fire Gem At Toftwood

Another good one, developing along the right lines. In good body and condition. She has a lovely head, correct in front with well-developed chest. She is well coupled with good width to her quarters and correct tail set. Hocks are well let down. She moved freely showing herself to advantage.

3rd Morlidge’s Kurzeja Kalina

Limit Bitch (10:1)

A good class with not a lot between those placed. I did notice a few light eyes in here. It does spoil the expression.

1st Revill’s Julita Ryveeta JW

Pretty headed with good eye colour and alert expression. Clean neck of good length leads to well placed shoulders. She is correct in front with enough bone and tidy feet. Well developd quarters with good width to her thigh and well-turned stifles. Correct tail set. She was in good body and moved well in profile showing drive from behind.

2nd McIlwaine’s Benoveor Can’t Buy Me Love

Stronger type but still balanced through. Correct head with dark brown eyes and kind expression. Well boned, straight front. She has well developed chest with width and depth to her ribs. Good rear angulation, hocks nicely let down. Presented in good body and coat. Close up to the winner.

3rd Graham’s Nyliram Hetty Wainthrop

Open Bitch (10:1)

What a pleasure to judge this lovely class with six champions present. All in lovely coat and condition and a credit to their owners.

1st Frost’s Sh Ch Bushwacker Something About Mary

Hard to believe this one is now 7 years old. One I have admired from the ringside. She does not disappoint on closer inspection. Super head with correct proportions and kind gentle expression. Clean neck of good length leads into nicely sloping shoulders. Mature in body with depth and width to her ribs. She is firm over the loins and well coupled. Well angulated quarters. She has width to her thighs, well-turned stifles and is short from hock to heel. She was well presented in full coat and good body. Moved to advantage showing drive from behind. A pleasure to award her the CC.

2nd Sutherland’s Jacranella Sonata

Another out of the top drawer and on top form. Presented a lovely outline when standing. She has a lovely head with good length of muzzle. Strong neck with good layback of shoulder. Well boned through giving her strength but still retaining femininity. Well ribbed up with muscular loins and well developed quarters. She has a good bend of stifle and moved well behind. Won the RCC in strong competition. Her title can’t be too far away.
