I wish to thank the WELKS Committee for the invitation to judge this lovely breed and for their hospitality. It was a very well run show.

It is 4 years since I last judged the breed and I am pleased to say that there has been much improvement. Almost gone are the upright fronts and upright pasterns. The breed standard was changed some years ago from ‘pasterns upright’ to ‘pasterns slightly sloping’. This is very much a working breed and upright pasterns are inadequate shock absorbers.

Much improved also is front angulation and coat texture. I had the full range of colours in this entry with none verging on brown or yellow. I was very pleased with the overall quality.

1st Belatarr North by Northwest ShCM (Ms I E Collier). What a grand dog this is. His length to height ratio is spot on being slightly longer in body than height. He is well ribbed up and short in loin and has a powerful rear which he uses well to propel him round the ring. His head is very handsome and well furnished. He has a great tail action and is a very sound mover.

2nd Zöldmáli U R Special (Mr LW & Mrs SM Howard). A smaller and more compact dog who stands on tight feet and well boned legs. He has a lovely expression and excellent front movement.

1st Ribblevalley Bambo (Miss A & Mr D Maw & Fuller). At his and his handler’s first show and after a bit of coaching he settled well. He is at the leggy stage as puppies often are at this age but he has many qualities. He is well boned and has a straight front and slightly sloping pasterns with slightly oval feet. His ribs are moderately well sprung and his head is well balanced with good beard and eyebrows. He certainly fits the standard for temperament being lively and demonstrably affectionate.

1st Enryb True Blue (Mr M & Mrs S Whitney). This is a moderate breed of robust build and distinguished appearance and this youngster certainly fits the bill! He is very well balanced all through, has good length to height ratio, strong bone, a well muscled and slightly arched neck and well laid shoulders. His body is taut and strong with a well developed chest and moderate spring of rib. At 19 months he needs to drop in brisket but his elbows are well tucked in and there is plenty of dog in front. He has well developed hind quarters with a lovely flare over his hips. Viewed from behind his quarters match his body in width and he has moderately turned stifles. His tail is slightly low set and he carries it horizontally when moving. He has a harsh close fitting coat with undercoat, facial furnishings and is a lovely golden sand colour. His head is correctly proportioned being slightly shorter in foreface than skull and his eye colour harmonizes with his coat colour. His movement is fluid and he covers plenty of ground. He is very true in front. He totally filled my eye and I could find nothing to equal him. Dog CC, his first, and BOB.

1st Belatarr America (Ms I E Collier). This dog is full of breed type. He is moderately angulated with excellent length and return of upper arm placing his front legs well under his body. His shoulder placement is correct and he has depth of brisket, enough heart and lung room, is well ribbed up and has a good underline i.e. not tucked up. His back is level and he is in hard condition. He is very true coming to but tends to be a bit wide behind until he settles into his stride. His side gait is excellent but he carries his tail a tad high for my preference. He has a typical well furnished head and a very kind expression. He is clearly a very happy boy and gently wags his tail on the stack expressing his gentle manner. He was considered for the reserve ticket but lost his concentration in the final run off.

1st Zöldmáli Latin Lover (Mr LW & Mrs SM Howard). A rangier dog who has an aristocratic stance but he was lacking furnishings today. He is well off for bone, moderately angulated and carries a level topline. A dog built for working must have a good nose and I loved his broad nose with its wide nostrils. He covers enough ground on the move but is proud of his tail.

1st Fourlums Tavaszi (Mrs Y J D Deighton). I liked his size and harsh coat and he is well balanced although I would prefer a touch more length of neck. He carries a good topline and underline and has well muscled quarters. His head is masculine with a moderate stop and slightly oval eyes but it was lacking a bit in furnishings which failed to give him that somewhat square appearance. He moves with reach and drive and carries his tail level with his back. He tail has a wonderful gently wagging action which shows his mildly mannered temperament. In the run off for the challenge he upped his game and moved with style, reach and drive to take the RCC.

2nd Lanokk Szivos JW (Mr LW & Mrs SM Howard). He doesn’t stand over as much ground as the winner but nevertheless he has good ribs and depth. His front movement is very good with its daisy cutting action and I loved how his pasterns have the correct slight slope to them.

1st Starshot Hawkeye (Mrs C Busby). She is robustly built with plenty of bone and substance and has a very lively demeanour. She has plenty of heart and lung room and wide quarters. Her head is very well proportioned and she had good furnishings. She moves well and clearly loves showing off.

2nd Nagyzabasi Orlagh for Gwaithmaes NAF (Ms Y L Aldridge). What an absolute little darling. She is so so pretty and melts your heart with her expression. Her head planes are well balanced and her ears frame her head beautifully. She has a good straight front with enough forechest, strong loin and slightly sloping croup. Once her facial furnishings grow a bit more she will be cracking.

1st Kisdon Happy Memories (Mrs P Edminson). A very nice exhibit indeed. On the stack she presents a very noble picture and has the correct proportions being slightly longer than tall. She has a good forehand, depth of brisket, is very clean over the neck and shoulders and has a great underline. She is good over the croup and displays her kind temperament with her gently wagging tail. Animated mover. BPIB.

1st Oakberrow M'lady Gin (Mrs D S Smillie-Gray). Two very pleasing girls of differing styles. Taller than the second she has a terrific front, good length and return of upper arm, is well ribbed up and has a powerful back end. Her head is lovely and she has an almost human expression in her eyes. She covers plenty of ground on the move and uses her tail well.

2nd Morganna Anise (Ms R J Newman). She has the most terrific coat and a beautiful head with great beard and eyebrows. She has depth of chest and well sprung ribs but tends to lose her topline on the stack. She is very well muscled indeed.

2nd Ewtor Guilty As Sinn (Mr A D Moss). Moderately angled fore and aft she carries a level topline, has a reachy neck and well laid shoulders. Her head is very feminine with a good broad nose. She was lacking a bit of condition today but her coat has great texture with undercoat. Moves OK.

Post Graduate Bitch. Entries: 6 Absentees: 0

1st Tragus Flirty Fox (S Richardson). As her handler stacks her there is a tendency to overstretch and then she shoves her front out. However, once her feet are placed correctly and she is comfortable with her stance she presents a picture of high breeding, elegance and style. Her head is quite beautiful and she has an expression that looks right into your soul. Her neck is well muscled with a beautiful crest and fits cleanly into her well laid shoulders. She has a well proportioned body with elbows fitting closely and her legs are well under her body. Her ribs are moderately sprung and carried well back. The flare over her hips matches her width of body with a taut and firm loin in between. The expression ‘moves like a train’ fits her perfectly. She could be on rails because she moves so smoothly holding her topline and expending no surplus energy. I was pleased to award her her first CC.

2nd Adel Liliana (Mr L L Lewis). Another lovely bitch and very similar to the winner. There is nothing exaggerated about her and she looks first rate on the stack. She has an appealing head and expression, enough depth and spring of rib and a level topline. The winner had the better length of neck and was slightly better in shoulder but that’s nit picking. She and her young handler have come on a treat since their first outings and I was delighted to award them the RCC.

3rd Twelveoaks Carolina Red (R Court)

Limit Bitch. Entries: 7 Absentees: 1

1st Deifstock Desert Rose (Mr W & Mrs S Cooper). She is shown on a loose lead and allowed to wag her tail whilst she looks adoringly at her handler. This impressed me greatly. She presents a terrific outline, is moderate all through, is very elegant over the neck and shoulder, has wide, well muscled quarters and moves beautifully. Her head is attractive but I would prefer a darker eye. She wears a fabulously harsh jacket.

2nd Tragus Fox Angel (Mr P & Mrs L Upton). Her head is to die for and is correctly proportioned with terrific eyebrows and beard. On the stack she tends to straighten her stifle which spoils her outline somewhat but she uses her quarters well on the move.

3rd Enryb Scarlett O'Hara at Ewtor (Mrs A E Moss)

Open Bitch. Entries: 4 Absentees: 1

1st Sh Ch Tragus Honey Bee (Mr P & Mrs L Upton). This kennel turns out some cracking dogs and this one is no exception. She has a striking outline and has an air of arrogance about her. She is well boned and has plenty of substance, big ribs and a big bum. She has good length to her upper arm, well laid shoulders, a very good coat and head furnishings and moves with style.

2nd Sh Ch Kisdons Custom Made (Mrs P Edminson). Longer cast than the winner she has depth of brisket, well sprung ribs and a good underline. She moves effortlessly with a great tail action.

3rd Sh Ch Oakberrow Let The Fun Be Gin JW (Mrs D S Smillie-Gray)
