Breed: Spaniel (Cocker)

Windsor Championship Show 2022. Judge Andy Scourfield

Thanks to all the exhibitors for a super entry which I enjoyed judging . I am encouraged by the state of the breed, not only in the higher classes but also in the puppy and junior classes. Quality was generally high, and in some classes I really was splitting hairs between placings. Three incorrect mouths, but not horrendously so, just the odd tooth or two out of alignment. Good movement prevailed although some dogs did not move with much enthusiasm, maybe due to the hot weather, but I was struck by the number of exhibitors who do not talk to their dogs an encourage them on the move. Remember this is supposed to be the MERRY cocker. A few exhibits had a bit of extra length to them – the breed standard calls for a compact dog with an ever wagging tail, showing the bustling cocker action. My main winners all had these qualities -most essential in this breed.
