Cornwall Gundog Club

Golden Retrievers

I should like to extend my sincere thanks to my Steward Nick and the Officers and Committee of Cornwall Gundog Club for inviting me to judge at this most prestigious of shows.  It was a most enjoyable day with a fabulous entry and I greatly appreciated the opportunity of the appointment, which allowed me to Judge many quality dogs. I must mention an excellent veteran class where all exhibits were a credit to both their owners and to the breed itself.

2ND Clunie, K, Warrentor Bold As Brass: A truly lovely young dog of just 7 months of age – giving away 3 months to the eventual class winner, which at this age really does show. VHC: Harris, S, Charmagon Auriela

Junior (3,2abs)

1ST Hurrell, Mr & Mrs, Kadaka Kaos At Gillansgold: At just 6 days out of moving from puppy qualification, I thought this dog to be extremely well-balanced and symmetrical all through. Mouth is correct, clean and complete with full dentition and a scissor bite. Masculine head that was in no way coarse that is well chiselled with dark eyes. He excels in forehand construction and overall musculature. Deep in brisket and well ribbed with balanced and short-coupled body. Strong hindquarters. Moved maintaining a level topline at all times and showing good forehand reach and drive from his hindquarters. Stands square hock to heel with excellent bone and feet. Presented in beautiful condition.

Yearling (3, 1abs)

1ST Jenkin, J, Chriskerry Night Whispers: Pleasing bitch in good overall condition and extremely well presented. Super feminine head with the softest of expressions. Correct, clean and complete dentition with scissor bite. Clean strong neck into good shoulder placement. Well sprung ribs leading to strong loin of optimum length and well muscled hindquarters. Good bone all through, tight neat feet with short nails. A little down on her pasterns. Moved soundly and accurately.

2ND Johnson, H, M & L, Palton Party On Dude At Niallgold: A balanced and very well made dog all through, super head and expression, correct, clean and complete dentition and scissor bite. Graduate (8, 4abs)

1ST Jenkin, J, Chriskerry Night Whispers

2ND Hutchinson, J, Largymore Love Me Too Of Trethellan: I really liked this bitch and was well presented. She has a very good head that was feminine and free of any coarseness and eyes of correct shape and colour; correct, clean and complete dentition with scissor bite, strong neck leading to well paced shoulders, good width and depth to brisket, ribs well sprung, moderately angulated hindquarters. Very good bone and neat feet with short nails. Moved soundly.

Post Graduate (4, 1abs)

1ST Porter, M & S, Shearstone Muck Fe JW: A truly lovely bitch and excellent example of the breed in terms of type and quality, of just 3 years of age. Correct, complete and clean dentition and scissor bite. She gave me the impression that she could do a day’s work in the field with ease. Extremely well balanced. Feminine head, with requisite chiselling and kind gentle expression. Excellent layback of shoulder with corresponding return of upper arm. Well ribbed leading to strong loin and well-muscled hindquarters. In excellent overall condition with good quality bone all through. Moved with ease showing excellent forward reach and drive from the rear. She was not in full coat, which cost her the higher honours that I wanted to award her.

2ND Hutchinson, J, Largymore Love Me Too Of Trethellan

3RD Chappell, M, Creekside Royal Nuptials

Limit Dog (2)

1ST Main, S, Denmarella Mr Bright Skies Over Gwyngala: A dog of just over 2 years of age who still has his best to come once mature. Impressed me with overall type and construction, on the move he was erratic, which so nearly cost him but once settled moved soundly accurately whenever asked. Correct, complete and clean dentition with scissor bite, extremely well balanced all through. Beautiful masculine head free of coarseness and gentle expression. Excels in forehand construction. Deep in brisket with good width to chest and well ribbed back. Strong hindquarters. Level topline maintained when moving and once settled. Moved soundly. Reserve Best Of Breed & Best Opposite Sex.

2ND Bissell, J Warrentor Tribute For Bisskids: A dog of almost 7 years of age who presented in good overall condition. Masculine but not coarse head with good chiseling and dark eye. Correct, clean and complete dentition with scissor bite. Strongly made all through with very good bone and feet. Good forehand assembly. Moved soundly.

Limit Bitch (3, 1abs)

1ST McCammick, R, Creekside Hand In Hand: Extremely well balanced bitch all through of almost 3 years of age. Really liked her overall type. Beautiful feminine head with correct chiselling beneath her eyes and the softest expression and dark eye. Correct, clean and complete dentition with scissor bite. Excels in her forehand construction. Very good depth and width to brisket and well-ribbed back into strong long. Well made hindquarters with good width to second thigh. Level topline maintained in movement. Stood square hock to heel with excellent bone and feet that had the shortest of nails. Moved well with good forward reach and driving from the rear. Disappointingly, her Achilles heel was her tail carriage, which whilst not gay, was a little high for me.

2ND Merrick, J J & J, Stormerick Constance: A quality bitch of 3 years of age. Very good overall type and extremely well balanced. Super head and expression, correct, clean and complete dentition with scissor bite, excellent fore and hind construction, good width and depth to chest, good quality bone all through, very good on the move in all profiles but I felt was not perhaps moved to her best advantage and ability, which ultimately cost her the class.

Open Dog (5, 1abs)

1ST Fenn, D, Chalksville Highlander At Jandeburn JW: Dog of almost 3 years of age. Completely balanced all through and without exaggeration. Strong but balanced head, strong muzzle, correct, clean and complete dentition with scissor bite, muscular neck into well placed shoulder and corresponding return of upper arm, deep chest, short loin and level topline, strong hindquarters, excellent bone all through – moved accurately and soundly whenever asked.

2ND Bawden, C, Goldstand Rock and Roll At Darthill: A dog of 4 years of age, different type to my class winner. More masculine than 1 but was carrying too much weight over his shoulders for me. Upstanding masculine male. Typical head with dark eye. Correct, clean and complete dentition and scissor bite. Muscular neck into well placed shoulders. Deep chest with good width. Strong hindquarters. Quality bone with neat feet. Moved well.

3RD Bissell, J Warrentor Tribute For Bisskids

Reserve: Chappell, M, Creekside Royal Nuptials

Open Bitch (6, 2abs)

1ST Clunie, K, Warrentor Caipirinha: A 4 year old bitch that I have judged before – she completely fits my template for this breed, totally free of exaggeration. She has an indisputable ring presence and attitude that both she and her handler maximize to their best advantage. Completely balanced, could easily work all day. Super feminine head, well chiselled, kind eye and pleasing expression, correct, clean and complete dentition with scissor bite, strong neck leading seamlessly into extremely well placed shoulder and corresponding return of upper arm, deep chest of good width, well sprung ribs and short muscular loin, well muscled hindquarters. Stands square hock to heal. When moving she demonstrated excellent forward reach whilst driving from the rear and always accurate in all profiles. The best of bone all through, neat feet and short nails.

My absolute pleasure to award he Best Of Breed and I was both proud and thrilled to learn that she later when on to gain Best In Show; I would respectfully suggest a worthy recipient of such an award.
