Afghan Hounds

Puppy (1) 1, BP, Hills & Thornton’s Absolute Afghan’s Djibouti at Karnak, b/m gold of 9 months, typy masculine head with strong jaw, good shoulder placement and upper arm, clean elbow and good turn of stifle, springy movement and clean coming and going, well-set tail with pleasing ring.

Open (4, 1 abs) 1, Gunn & Cannon’s Int/Lux Ch Amal Salang Hey I’m the Star at Zushkan (Imp), this mature black bitch absolutely oozes type, such an arrogant expression, really looks at and through you; dark eyes and proud head carriage, well balanced all through, light and athletic on the move with typical springy gait. Would just like a slightly smoother transition from neck to shoulder. BOB & G4 in a well-filled and strong Group. 2, RBOB Collins’ Pride and Prejudice Fyrverkeri, another black with a feminine head with definite beard, dark eye, good coat pattern, well set ringed tail, moved pretty well. Would prefer a little more angulation at both ends; 3, Seamarks & Nemoto’s Sayadena Northern Lights (Imp).

Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

Puppy (1,abs)

Open (3,2 ) 1, Wood’s Beaujon’s Velvet, nice head with correct ear set and length, dark eye, harsh coat with good furnishings, good height/length ratio, level topline, well set and carried tail of correct length, good drive behind and active in profile, BOB.

Irish Wolfhounds

Puppy (2, 1) 1, BP & RBOB, Croucher & Blackman’s Electric Atmosphere, tall wheaten 9 months youngster, excellent basic make and shape with well balanced angulation, appealing masculine head with strong teeth and jaw, moved quite well especially behind. Now needs to fill and strengthen to match his height, and would prefer more of a rose ear.

Open (3, 2) 1, BOB, Cramphorn’s Yelxba Bonnie, 2 y/o brindle with such a nice head, strong, typy and feminine. Good length of neck into well laid shoulder, good feet and pasterns, deep chest and well-ribbed up, decent quarters though lacking slightly in muscle tone. Sound in all directions, but needs to go on a strict diet as she is carrying far too much weight; she has much to like.

AVNSC Hound

Puppy (2,1) 1, BP, Lewis’ Otterhound, Olphae Orlaithe, lovely head on this 11 months bitch, pleasing expression with good furnishings, good forehand with tight feet and plenty of fill, level topline kept on the move, clean all round, very nice. BP & PG 4.

Special Yearling (2) Litter sisters. 1, Nicholls’ Basenji, Shyllar Turning Heads, r/w, compact substantial youngster with excellent well-balanced angulation, plenty of fill, level topline, well set tail with very good shelf and well-muscled rear, well balanced head, moved pretty well though in a bit too much of a hurry. 2, Oorloff’s Basenji, Shyllar Wrapt in Gold, rather more refined and elegant than her sister; decent wrinkle and good earset, again well constructed and typy with good length of leg, unfortunately she did not like me as much as I liked her and was not settled either stacked or moving, pity.

Open (5,1) 1, Boggia’s Greyhound, Fionn Clann Lucullus, upstanding blue brindle hound with a well-chiselled masculine head, good length of neck and excellent forehand with good return, slightly sprung pasterns and correct feet. Deep brisket and well ribbed up, broad strong loin of good length, moved with long elastic strides and clean out and back. Not the finished article yet, still to develop fully in front, but much to look forward to; BNSC & G3; 2, Lindsey’s Basenji, Shyllar Crowned to Lead, r/w bitch with a beautiful head, short well-cushioned muzzle, lots of wrinkle and high set small hooded ears, good neck and shoulder, short back, strong moderate rear with plenty of muscle and high set tightly curled tail, all made the most of on the move. Feet could be better and would like a touch more return of upper arm. RBNSC; 3, Nicholl’s Basenji, Shyllar Breaking News.

AV Hound

Puppy (2,1) 1, Foxon’s Whippet, Dejare Might Be a Secret, light blue brindle, of excellent type, pretty head with fine ears, pleasing curvaceous outline with good topline and fallaway, plenty of scope, good angles both ends, good depth for age and well ribbed up, steady on the move and very sound, novice handler who coped very well; BP and PG3.

Open (7, 5) 1, McBain & Stevens’ Beagle, Blitzlillie Girl With No Name, a very shapely and sound l/w Beagle with a lovely outline; ample bone, super front and feet, well balanced proportions, level topline and merry stern carriage, moves really well and freely, and looks as if she could go all day; pleasing head with soft expression, which could perhaps be a touch more feminine. 2, Mackay’s Whippet, Stillastar Magic Moments, br/w with a nice curvy outline, very good shoulder and upper arm, plenty of depth and well ribbed back, ample length of loin and she moved very nicely. Would prefer more underjaw.

Veteran (11,2abs) This class was outstanding and full of lovely hounds; some I have judged and liked before went cardless and to gain a place in this company was no easy task. 1, Best Hound Veteran, Eardley’s Borzoi, Ryazan Perdita at Hillohawks ShCM, this 9 ½ y/o bitch has pretty much everything I look for in a Borzoi; sweeping generous outline, perfect balance, sound front, gently arched topline leading to correct fallaway and tail carriage, light free precise movement and a well chiselled typical feminine head. She is in full glamorous coat and very well presented; I liked her enough to award her second CC some years ago and she remains a top quality Borzoi; 2, McBain & Stevens’ Beagle, Redcap Bella Sorella, tri Beagle of lovely type and quality, beautiful feminine head with soft expression, excellent sound forehand with plenty of fill, level topline, short back, strong rear used to good effect to drive round the ring; sound as a bell and such a happy person in her work; 3, Cannon’s super typical Afghan, Multi Ch Calamus Mediator (Imp) ShCM.

Hound Group

This was as high quality a hound group as I have judged; and I have judged a few over the years! Quality right down the line and plenty of classy hounds went empty-handed.

G1, Protheroe’s MS Dachs, Royalmaple Higledy Pigledy. This little one has it all; lovely head with feminine expression but nothing toyish about her; so well balanced and proportioned with superb neck and shoulder, plenty of keel, long ribbing and topline kept on the move, strong in rump giving plenty of drive, the long grass held no terrors for her; she also has that indefinable star quality and showmanship that demands attention, and she is as good as she thinks she is! A quite stunning young bitch and I was delighted to see her go on to a well deserved BIS. G2, Shepherd’s Whippet, Kidaruka’s It’s Showtime at Oxana, this handsome youngster has so much going for him, very much the scopy type that I like, masculine without any coarseness, so well balanced and elegant, ample depth and fill, clean front and feet, standing over a lot of ground, moves with great freedom and drive, no mincing here and he is in fit show condition. Still a young dog and a really exciting prospect. G3, Greyhound, F C Lucullus; G4, Afghan Hound, A S Hey I’m the Star at Z.

Puppy Group

PG1, Whitton’s Beagle, Jalhar New Lease of Life with Haggatty, petite young bitch with a very pretty feminine head, dark eye and soft expression; well balanced and constructed all through and this showed in her movement, strong behind, clean in front but especially good in profile, really free and active; PG2 MS Dachs, Protheroe’s Ginco Mikey Boots by Royalmaple, another typy youngster from this kennel, well presented and with a pleasing houndy head, good front, feet and keel, moved very well despite the long grass, just riding up behind slightly at the moment; PG3, Whippet, Dejare Might Be a Secret; PG4, Otterhound, O Orlaithe.
