Manchester & District Sporting Terrier Club

Manchester and District Sporting Terrier Club Open Show

Sunday, 14th November 2021

I would like to thank the committee of Manchester and District Sporting Terrier Club as I was honoured to be invited to judge my own breed, soft coated wheaten terriers as well as parson russell terriers, Glen of Imaal and cesky terriers. My decisions were made all the more difficult by the high quality of the exhibits I had to go over and there was not a dog among them that I wouldn’t have jumped at the chance to take home with me. There was a lovely friendly atmosphere at the show and it was good to see everyone following Covid guidelines. Many thanks to my steward of the day, Rachel Leeson, who was particularly helpful and kept me right.

Cesky Terrier

Postgraduate d/b (1,0)

1st, Pearson's, Zvonenka Hamentashen at Winoski (Imp CZE), b, This lovely 3 year old bitch caught my eye, oozing femininity and the friendliest of expressions. She had well shaped ears placed highly on her slightly arched head, a dark eye and a good strong jaw with a superb scissor bite. I loved the length of her neck and correct tailset and topline that she held on the move. Good for size, groomed well and showed her beautiful coat off to the best advantage. RBOB

Open d/b (2,0)

1st Tobijanski's Janski Little Witch, b, This was a smashing 18 month old bitch that just screamed quality. Beautifully presented coat with a nice wave on her furnishings and a body full of substance. She had a good length of foreface on her well made head, slightly defined stop and correct set ears. Her moderately long elegant neck led into well laid shoulders. She had straight forelegs that were exceptionally good for bone, a good spring of chest, a strong loin and both topline and tailset were correct. Well angulated hindquarters with a particularly strong and well muscled upper thigh. She moved true and with purpose and drive both ways as she went around the ring. BOB

2nd Pearson’s Placido Musical Mission at Winoski, d, This was a confident 2.5 year old boy, well balanced and of good proportions with nothing exaggerated. He had a keen expression, a masculine head and proper earset. Mouth was good with big white teeth set squarely in a jaw that was strong and punishing. A strong neck led into well placed shoulders, a well sprung ribcage and strong muscled loin. Rear angulation was spot on. Good tail carriage.

Glen of Imaal (1,0)

Puppy d/b

1st Tobijanski’s Zipper Magic Molly (taf) b This bitch was only 6 months and 4 days old on the day and what a wee cracker she was! I loved everything about her! The friendly and keen to please expression on her soft coated head was complimented by the harsh coat on her body. Her head was broad yet clearly feminine. She had small and well placed rose ears, a dark eye and big black nose. Her mouth was perfect; big white teeth with the correct bite, in a strong jaw. She had a good depth of chest with well sprung ribs. Her topline was firm with a gentle rise leading to strong muscular hindquarters with an excellent turn of stifle. Tail was carried gaily and topline held as she moved around the ring with grace yet purposefully. I think the future is bright for this girl and both her breeder and owner must be delighted with her. Puppy d/b (2,0)

1st Satherley’s Silkcroft Wildest Dreams, b, A pretty bitch at just 7 months old but oh so confident in the ring doing everything her handler asked her. Her lovely temperament was soon revealed as I received her kisses while going over her. Nice square muzzle, big black nose, soft hazel eyes, good for pigment and smallish triangular ears breaking level with her head. She had a correct mouth with scissor bite and big white teeth. Her coat was everything you would wish for; it has the correct soft texture, clear wheaten colour and the wave you’d expect, all groomed to perfection. She looked the part freestood or stacked.

2nd Jackson’s Silverluka Jamming Till Dawn, d, Just a few weeks older than the 1st place winner, this boy has got it all going on but needs to settle better for his handler in the ring. He has a coat that confused me at first as it is incredibly mature for a pup so young. It was the correct wheaten colour, soft texture with wave and in great abundance! He was well balanced and had a beautiful profile when settled; a strong masculine head with a keen and ready expression, a strong jaw, correct scissor bite, a neck of good length, well laid shoulders with a lovely topline and rear angulation. I hope his owners persevere with the showing as I think he has real potential.

Junior d/b,

1st Satherley’s Silkcroft Shake It Off, d, littermate to the 1st winner of the puppy class and if anything, more confident than his sister as he strutted around the ring and claimed his placing. He was similar to his sister but with a clearly masculine head and his silky coat was more mature. He had an excellent straight front, was good for bone, good depth of chest, strong loin, level topline, and exceptionally well muscled upper thighs. He freestood four square with great rear angulation. He moved well both ways around the ring with extension and drive, maintaining his topline and with excellent tail carriage. Nothing was overdone on him and he deserved his win of RBOB.

Post Graduate d/b (3,0)

1st Dalton’s Nokki's Brilliant Star Adara (Imp SWE) b, this delightful 2 year old bitch is still maturing but was very feminine, good for size and had the softest of coats. She had a very pretty head, hazel eye and smallish triangular shaped ears which were perfectly set. She has a correct straight front and was short coupled. High set tail with plenty behind it. Everything was balanced and in proportion but I loved her for the length and shape of her graceful neck. She went well for her handler.

2nd Brodrick’s Silkcroft Place Your Bets, b, another beautiful 2 ½ year old bitch. Her mouth was spot on with correct dentition and scissor bite. Short coupled, level topline and nice highly set tail which she carried well on the move. She had plenty of coat of the correct colour and texture and was in excellent groom. She moved soundly around the ring with purpose.

3rd Jones' Silverluka Hotter Than July, b, a

Open d/b (4,1)

This proved the hardest class of the day as all 3 are quality dogs with fantastic attributes.

1st Jones' Saffini Suga Pie Honey Bunch, b, This 5 year old bitch cut a perfect wheaten profile and was refreshingly bang on standard size. She was very feminine, as a bitch should be, but don’t let that fool you; under those glorious golden open curls was a body covered in muscle and to be sure, she could do a day’s work. Her head had a flat skull, parallel lines, a distinct stop and strong jaw. She was alert and held her well-set small triangular ears correctly. Pigment was strong on lips and around her dark hazel eyes. Nice depth of chest, good angulation and a level topline which she held on the move. Handled beautifully and gave her all. There wasn’t much between her and the 2nd placed exhibit. BOB

2nd Taylor’s Silverluka Superstition at Raisingsands, this almost 2 year old bitch had many of the same qualities as the 1st placed which is not surprising as she is her daughter. Another balanced feminine bitch being the correct standard size with beautiful silky open golden curls. She stood four square on her toes, keen and ready for action. Pleasing head, with dark eye and correct earset, atop a moderate neck running cleanly into well placed shoulders. Her front was straight and there was plenty of bone on this girl. Good depth of chest and ribs well sprung on this short coupled girl. Her topline was held on the move and tail set high on back and carried in a gentle arc. Plenty more to come from this girl and she is one to watch.

3rd, Dalton’s Celtannia Atlantic Gold, d, a quality 4 year old boy deserving of a mention. What a profile he cut! I loved his overall shape, length of neck and admired his grooming which showed off the best of his assets.
