Guildford & District Canine Society

Thank you to the officeholders and committee for inviting me to judge at this efficiently run show. The day was challenging because of the extreme cold and forecast of more severe weather. There was a lovely atmosphere, if you were wrapped up well, it was fine. Thank you to all the exhibitors that gave me such a fabulous quality and quantity entry. I had never received such large entries before, thankfully there were absentees and I got through it with ease. I was very pleased to see a lot of my top placed dogs do very well under other judges on the day and at other recent shows.

NORFOLK TERRIER

POST GRADUATE (3)

1. Nash’s Tiggy of House Nash. Correct scissor bite. Acceptable head but would have preferred better ears. Excelled in forequarters, being straight and powerful with elbows close to body. Compact body with good depth and short back. Excellent hard, wiry coat with breed typical movement. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

2. Walker’s Watercroft Golden Spice. Was a better dog when assessed on the table than original impressions. I would have preferred ears a little smaller and set more on top of the head. Appeared to have a longer back than above and moved wider in front. Otherwise quite a nice bitch. Moved satisfactorily and had a super hard, wiry coat of correct colour.

OPEN (2)

1. Nash’s Ralph of House Nash. Superb gay, friendly temperament. Satisfactory head but would have preferred better ear set. Compact body with good depth and short back. Good substance and bone. Muscular hindquarters. Breed typical movement. Excellent hard, wiry coat. Correct cat-like feet.

BEST OF BREED.

NORWICH TERRIER

OPEN (2)

1. Hayes’ Ragus Seven Jumps JW. Well-proportioned head with wide skull and defined stop. Small, oval eyes with good expression. Erect ears, well placed. Compact body with level topline. Well set tail. Broad, strong and muscular hindquarters with good turn of stifle. Coat not at it’s best. Exhibitor advised she had been stripped out for Crufts. Moved well. A favourite of mine, but I have seen her look better. BEST OF BREED.

2. Hayes’ Ragus Fabulous Clown ShCM ShCEx. Quite different to his kennel mate. Well-proportioned head and general outline. Level top line and well-set tail. Nice, neat feet. Coat OK. Moved well. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER

The masculine dogs outshone the very feminine bitches.

PUPPY (3)

1. Fisher’s Laracali Nessaja. Only just six months old, very much a baby with lovely temperament. Head developing well with well-placed good ears. Hopefully, cheek muscles will come with age. Body shape coming. Well-muscled hindquarters, hocks well let down with stifles well bent. Tail placement OK but flying too high at the moment due to being so excited. Moved OK. Needs to settle and mature, should be nice when fully grown. BEST PUPPY.

JUNIOR (5)

1. Boggins & Burton’s Luthais Loch Tay. Only just over a year old and should mature into a lovely dog. More of a moderate dog all over. Has a super head with broad skull, pronounced cheek muscles and ears set correctly. I would prefer rounder eyes. Shape of body developing well with all proportions correct. Good feet with strong pasterns, aiding him to have excellent free, powerful and effortless movement. RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

2. Hammond’s Hammystaff Red Revenge. A much heavier, masculine dog with more width of front. Typical head with dark, round eyes and strong muzzle. Excellent shaped body in good proportions with noticeable tuck up. Well-muscled with good angulation. A shame it was difficult to assess his movement.

3. Mitchell’s Vimaval Red Angel.

POST GRADUATE (5)

1. Walker’s Georgie Poergie Pops at Teshleystaf. A very mature, masculine dog. Head of good shape and proportions. In super fit condition. Straight front legs and well boned. Excellent shaped body of all the correct proportions. Moved freely and powerful with drive from the rear.

2. Jones & Merrick’s Magicgem Queen of Hearts at Rougestaff. Very feminine bitch. Good head, broad skull, correct ears and nice round eyes. Not the developed body of the dogs, but still quite young and could mature into a lovely bitch.

3. Mitchell’s Blooming Lovely at Vimaval.

OPEN (3)

1. Michell’s Chedanstaff Devil Star. A super mature dog, presented in excellent condition and super temperament. Black coat shone, on tip toes, well boned and muscled – Fit for Function! Very good head, broad skull with correct furrow, distinct stop, pronounced cheek muscles and short foreface. Correct ear placement and round eyes. Body of super shape, good feet. Moved well. Easily deserved BEST OF BREED.

ROTTWEILLER

SPECIAL YEARLING (6)

What a class of four wonderful young puppies and a challenge to judge as they were all lovely.

1. Miller’s Ausries Moscow Mule. They were all so nice, I tried to pick out the best mover and this one won. He sailed around the ring very positively with good length of stride and powerful hind thrust. Only seven months old, but very mature. Medium length, well-proportioned head with broad skull and well-defined stop. Broad, roomy chest, straight, strong back. Broad, strong muscled hindquarters. Hocks well angulated without exaggeration. Pleased to see he went Group Two in the Working Puppy Group. BEST PUPPY AND RESERVE BEST OF BREED.

2. Austen’s Ausrie’s Mojito. Sister to the above. Much of the same attributes apply, but the feminine version. A lovely feminine head, well made. Presented in excellent condition of coat and structure. Strong, round and compact feet with well arched toes. Moved very well, not quite so angulated as her brother.

3. Courtney-Baughan’s Whisperdown a Kind of Hush.

4. Williams’ Montelago Billabong.

POST GRADUATE (3)

1. Miller’s Bereyda Firestorm. Good head. Nicely constructed with good bone. Strong, broad, well-muscled hindquarters. Stifles fairly well bent and hocks well angulated. Moved satisfactorily. Black and clearly defined markings.

OPEN (2)

1. Wheaton’s Ausries The Real Thing for Acinonyx JW. I was told afterwards I had given this dog high honours as a puppy. I was so pleased he has gained his JW and grown into a lovely mature dog. I consider he meets the breed standard very well. Excellent masculine head. Strong, round, muscular neck. Broad and deep chest with well sprung ribs. Back straight, strong and not too long. Strongly muscled, broad hindquarters, with correct amount of angulation. Strong, round, compact feet with well arched toes. Moved with strength and endurance, good stride and thrust from behind. Excellent colour and condition. Pleased to see he went Group Two in the Working group, only beaten by the Best in Show winner. BEST OF BREED.

A.V. SPECIAL YERLING (56)

Some lovely dogs in this class, mainly puppies.

        1. Brooks & Cairns’ French Bulldog, Corursus Become the One. Excellent seven-month-old dark brindle puppy of pleasing size and type. Square head with just enough wrinkle to his domed forehead. Lovely dark eyes and well set ‘bat’ ears. Muzzle well cushioned with a well-defined stop. Correct bite and upsweep of jaw. Nice length of arched neck, spring of rib, depth of chest and wide straight front. Cobby, muscular and well-rounded body. Correct topline which he held on the move. Good angulation and feet. Free, flowing movement.

        2. Kruger & Howlett’s Whippet, Buqa Di Gucci at White Squall (Imp It) NAF TAF. A beautiful, elegant, graceful ten-month-old brindle white trim bitch. Lovely to go over. Everything flowed with no exaggeration. Excellent head with good expression. Elegant long neck leading to well-placed shoulders. Deep chest with graceful arch over loin. Well-developed thigh muscles. Moved elegantly, low to the ground with good stride. Pleased to see she won the Hound Puppy Group.

        3. Challis’ Hungarian Vizsla, Vizslanya Csibe.

        4. Austin & Zolakova’s Border Colle, Huntly Forged in Steel for Hysteps (IKC)

        5. Slomkowski’s Lhasa Apso, Kentwone Derek Jewel by Skylax.

A.V. GRADUATE (36)

        1. Clarke’s Golden Retriever, Sunnyoak The Girl is Mine. A lovely balanced bitch, nothing exaggerated, sound and kind. Feminine head with dark eyes giving the kind expression. Correct length of foreface and well-set ears. Good length of neck into well laid-back shoulders with a level topline. Straight front and cat like feet. Well bodied, in super condition. Moved powerfully with drive.

        2. Phillips’ English Toy Terrier, Ettology Big Bang. Fell in love with this super young dog. The weather conditions were not ideal for him. I am sure if he had been warmer, he would have really shown himself off. His overall quality could not deny him a good placing. Good long, narrow head with flat skull with no snipiness. Well placed erect candle-flame shaped ears, tight lips and correct scissor bite. Slightly arched neck, straight front legs and strong pasterns. Compact body. Good hindquarters. Tail set low and carried correctly. Moved well when he forgot about the cold. I was told afterwards he gained his JW today at fourteen months old.

        3. Watts’ Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Oakmarsh Freedom.

        4. Pearn’s Boxer, Bonmac Little Bo Peep.

        5. Moulding’s Basset Griffon Vendeen (Petit), Nykarth Quite the Surprise.

A.V. OPEN (38)

        1. Shamatova’s Border Collie, Nashdom One Day in May. Lovely feminine bitch, very well handled. Good head of correct proportions with distinct stop. Nice dark eyes, correct ears, well carried. Good lay of shoulders and straight front legs. Super oval feet. Had a lovely athletic appearance with well-constructed body. Level topline, being slightly longer in body than height. Nicely muscled, angulated hindquarters producing good movement. Well presented, in good weather resistant coat, nice breeching and brush.

        2. Watts’ Chesapeake Retriever, Sh Ch. Oakmarsh Chestnut. I attended the breed BAD and passed the MCE the day before, so it was nice to put it into practice. Especially having a working champion, who fitted the breed standard so well. Although she had produced puppies, she had retained her smartness, being well built yet retaining her femininity. When stood she has lovely body lines and balance. Good head, broad and round with medium stop. Distinctive oily, short, straight coat on face. Strong muscular neck flowing into good laid shoulders. Chest strong, deep and broad. Firm topline and body with plenty of substance. Powerful hindquarters and muscled second thigh, with stifles well angulated. Shown in good hard condition and very ‘fit for purpose’. Moved with good drive. Correct distinctive coat.

        3. Pace’s Dalmatian, Dalcatori Morganite Rosa Del Brondelvcede.

        4. Williams’ English Springer Spaniel, Cobhay Dazzling Azalea.

        5. Barham’s Pointer, Kenwardgold Minnie Me.

A.V. BRED BY EXHIBITOR (70)

        2. Clarke’s Golden Retriever, Sunnyoak The Girl is Mine. As above.

        3. Phillips’ English Toy Terrier, Ettology Big Bang.

        4. Jones’ Bearded Collie, Clanwillow Amazing Grace.

        5. Todd’s Golden Retriever, Toddrosa Oasis Charm JW.

A.V. NOT BRED BY EXHIBITOR (57)

          1. White’s Dalmatian, Sophtspot La De Da at Belsmard. Twenty-one-month-old black spotted bitch. Very professionally handled, as always, enabling her to show off her balance, strength and good bone at it’s best. Feminine head with flat skull and dark eyes, giving intelligent expression. Nicely arched neck, flowing into muscular shoulders. Good forechest, deep chest and level back. Strong, muscular loin with slight arch. Round compact feet with arched toes. Round, well defined spots evenly distributed finished the picture. Moved effortlessly and smoothly with long strides. Pleased to note she went Best of Breed and Utility Group Two.

          2. Silsbury’s Shih Tzu, Juhuas Expecto Patronium for J’Adoremy. Broad, round head, with correct ‘chrysanthemum-like’ effect. Nose slightly tip tilted. Dark round eyes gave good expression. Nicely arched neck. Good length of body. Heavily plumed tail, set on high, carried gaily over the back. Smooth flowing movement with front legs reaching well forward, strong rear action, showing pads. Long, beautifully groomed coat in excellent condition. Well loved.

         3. Harrison’s Tibetan Terrier, Tegkei Playing the Game.

         4. McBain & Stevens Beagle, Redcap Bella Sorella JW ShCM VW.

         5. Challis’ Hungarian Vizsla, Highforce Future Legend for Vizslanya JW.
