TIBETAN TERRIER Judge: Steven J Green
I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of the Association for the invitation to judge and their hospitality, thanks also to the exhibitors who entered under me and granted me the second highest entry in the group, I always set out to ensure that I give equal and fair time and consideration to all of the dogs present and I hope that this was the case. Having started judging in 1990, and awarding CCs since 2001, I found this judging assignment once of the most interesting and challenging and a chance to reflect on the state of the breed. The appeal of the breed for me has been its natural and un-exaggerated form, I cringe when I hear it described as a glamorous breed or that a certain dog is described as being the new type or another one being described as old fashioned! the standard has never called for glamour and when the breed is assessed in that manner by judges, I fear we are on the slippery slope for the future of the breed, as for a dog being new type or old fashioned, I cannot see that this can be the case when the breed standard in its essence and what it describes has not changed since the introduction of the breed and so to describe a dog as being new or old fashioned says again more about a judge than the breed itself. A few observations on the breed, it was good to see the size of those dogs entered where by and large fitting within the standard, shape and size of feet have improved since I last judged, having being lucky with the weather it was great to be able to asses them outside and not have handlers running around at break neck speeds dragging their dogs with them in an attempt to hide their movement, the standard asks you asses movement at the speed of walking or trotting only, I was looking for a balanced efficient driving movement that is correct one for the breed with good reaching front extension, balanced with an equally driving rear, however without the pads of the back feet being kicked up in an inefficient manner, it seems judges are being mistaken if they think is the correct movement for the breed it is not. Head shape and size in the breed is becoming worrying, with heads being too heavy and broad (bucket heads) or the other extreme long and thin and snipey. Reading Dr Greigs thoughts on the breeds head it cannot be understated on the importance to the breed and its origin and development. The balance of the foreface and skull allows for the correct placement of the eyes which in turn allowed for the dogs to have the optimum range of vision, whilst the standard calls for them to be large and round eyes, even small eyes in narrow skull too close together can give the appearance of being large. Many also lack enough strength in the zygomatic arch, again not in an exaggerated way but again to give balance to shape over all of the head and in keeping with the correct width of the jaw. Eye colour on the whole was Ok but even in this entry there were more than a few with lighter shade eyes than is good for the breed, those who are calling for the stance on chocolates in the breed must take this into serious consideration the breed is probably genetically as broad as it has ever been so the acceptance of chocolate for this reason in my own opinion a very weak one. Whilst there a few with tails which I think are too short, it was a joy to see many still with a kink towards their ends. Temperaments were very good and it was lovely to see so many of the youngster enjoying their first experience of the show ring and taking it all in their stride
