HOUNDS - OD (2) 1 McDonald-Ulliott’s Int Ch Hibeck Dino, remarkable Griffon Fauve still in great form, coat of the correct length and texture well presented, houndy head which is undoubtedly masculine but by no means course, with a lively expression, nicely folded ears, super bone in proportion, moderate neck as required, true front, shapely body, comes into his own with his supple easy movement. BIR, his second such award from me; 2 Stanley’s Covehithe Steam Boat Willy, impressive strongly made b/t Coonhound, very masculine head perhaps a shade strong in skull, good eyes and ears, correct neck with slight crest, well boned, turns feet slightly, well ribbed, good overall balance, preferred hindquarters of 1. Took his time to settle but when he did moved with good length of stride if not quite so smoothly as 1. RBD.
PGB (1) 1 Smith and Horton’s Coonsar Hill To High Water at Morganbury, pretty feminine Coonhound, nicely folded ears, good expression with right amount of flew, enough neck, well bodied, feet could be firmer, sinewy hindquarters, good stride behind, could have more reach in front and rather narrow coming towards me. RBB. OB (1) McDonald-Ulliott’s Hibeck Erin, Dino’s younger sister and has most of the same qualities. Feminine head, enough neck, correct coat texture, powerful hindquarters, good coming and going and has plenty of drive and enthusiasm. Not a lot between the two of them, marginally preferred Dino’s upper arm and slightly more collected front movement when seen from the side. Two great ambassadors for their breed. BB.
PASTORAL - OD (2) 1 Halliday and Yu’s Pascale Enzotica, my first sighting of a Picardy Sheepdog at a UK show and I’m sure he will continue to attract new friends to this striking breed. Head as per Standard with equal skull and muzzle, slightly convex skull, OK eyebrows and beard, the characteristic high set ears which contribute so much to the breed’s look, strong neck with proud head carriage, correct shoulder and upper arm, excels in topline, shapely body, powerful hindquarters, free effortless movement. Pleased to send him into the group; 2 Leadbeater’s Casta Spell The Winter Souls, classy White Swiss Shepherd, masculine head, correct ears, good length of leg and overall proportions, OK angulation without exaggeration. Moved well though could perhaps have a bit more reach in front. Liked him a lot, might have put up a stronger challenge had he been a shade bolder. RBD.
PB (1) 1 Gill’s Boscoantico Agrifoglia, well grown 10 months Bergamasco, broad skull and deep muzzle, soft expression, enough neck, promise of well sprung ribs, sound limbs, scores on the move, very collected for a youngster both coming and going and around the ring, coat coming on nicely. Look forward to seeing her when mature. BB. PGB (2) Two White Swiss Shepherds of very much contrasting types. 1 Waliczek and Dennison’s Colovaria The Winter Souls, pretty girl of more compact proportions, feminine head, liked her eyes and ears, excellent unexaggerated hindquarters, reasonable in front, perhaps could have a shade longer stride but her gait was sound and steady. RBB; 2 Bradshaw’s Mountwhite Altica, larger longer type with a well angulated shoulder but I felt a shade overdone in hind angles and could be a bit longer in leg. Good head type, scored on topline and has plenty of substance. Winner was whiter.
WORKING - OD (1) 1 Burnett’s Torfheide Beethoven at Skyeanroos, alone but upheld well the honour of the Entlebucher breed. Coming up for nine years and in the most super condition, muscular and in good coat. Appears to have a delightful nature. Masculine head, round eye, enough neck, good chest and ribbing, well made hindquarters, perhaps a shade wide in front now. Good free side gait. Must admit the balance of this breed intrigues me - the Standard says slightly longer than high but most I have seen give the impression of being rather longer in body than that.
GUNDOGS - Enjoyed this section with a good number of quality Portuguese Pointers and some interesting examples of the other breeds. Fronts appear to be the main issue in the PPs but in other respects the breed seems to be making excellent progress. PD (1) 1 Stilgoe’s Teisgol Henrique, very smart 8 months PP, masculine head, good eyes and ears, sufficient neck into excellent topline, quite mature in body, powerful sensibly angulated hindquarters. Just needs to tighten in front and feet but looked a picture going round. BP. JD (1) 1 Taylor’s Fabpoint Estrondo with Pointoak, lighter yellow PP with a stronger type of head, excellent neck, well bodied, gently sloping topline, perhaps could have a shade more angulation, especially in upper arm, but made the most of what he has to give an excellent side gait. PGD (1) 1 Condron’s Khyannes Valence at Covarney, nice to meet a Braque d’Auvergne for the first time in this country, and to find a good looking dog with the head type which makes the breed distinct, with the oval skull, more prominent occiput, overlapping upper lip and slight turn to the ear. Plenty of bone and substance, powerful hindquarters, perhaps could have a shade more slope to upper arm. Free active mover, just a shade extravagant in pastern action. OD (4) Good class. 1 Adams’ Achouffe Philanderer, the first words of the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer Standard are ‘Distinguished appearance’ - this chap has it and knows it! Long lean well proportioned head, clean neck proudly held, balanced angles front and rear, very good front with strong bone and correct pasterns for the breed, super topline, beautifully presented and handled, consummate showman. BIR, delighted to see Marion Waddell shortlist him in the group. He is still a youngster and I look forward to seeing what full maturity will bring; 2 Preston’s Volcano Energy Sabio Perro at Novaforesta, strongly made masculine Barbet, impressive male head, square muzzle, strong bone, excellent topline under the hair which was in clean condition but still with a good rustic look, masses of substance, sufficient bend of stifle, looked good on the move, just not quite as firm as winner in rear pastern. RBB; 3 Westaway and Edmondson’s PP Perdizcyo Byron.
PB (2) 1 Fox’s Teisgol Calisto of Dappleline, pretty feminine PP, appealing head proportions, good neck, straight front and one of the few with correct feet, well bodied, not excessive angulation but balanced both ends. Moved very well in the class but played up in the challenge for BP, otherwise it might have been a closer run thing against her brother; 2 Condron’s Coco Dianell Morava at Covarney, 11 month Braque d’Auvergne, going through the teenage stage but the basics are there, typical head and ears, shapely body with correct topline, well made hindquarters, a shade wide in front. Somewhat erratic on the move today, sure she will have better days with maturity. JB (1) 1 T Calisto of D. PGB (1) 1 Stilgoe’s Fab Point Aguardente, pretty feminine PP, slightly finer made than some but still has enough bone and substance, typical expression, correct topline, balanced outline, could have a shade more front angulation but still has a good length of stride and in the challenge pulled out all the stops to snatch RBB from her kennelmate. OB (3) 1 Taylor’s Pointoak Thief Of Hearts, quality PP with a feminine well proportioned head with the correct stop and oval forward facing eyes, correct length of neck flowing well into shoulders, decent front with good bone, well made hindquarters with matching angles. Really came in to her own on the move, ‘easy, elegant, with rhythmic trotting action’ describes her to a T, BB and put up a strong challenge to the Slovak; 2 Stilgoe’s Ir Sh Ch Perdizcyo Beatriz with Teisgol, solidly made PP with lots to like, broad skull, good skull/muzzle proportions, super bone, liked her topline and hindquarters. A shade more compact than the winner whose pasterns I preferred and whose side gait was more collected today; 3 Preston’s Barbet Novaforesta Lady-Fern.
TOYS - All Russian Toys. What a delightful breed this can be. Naturally at this stage there was quite a variety of type, some showing obvious resemblance in certain aspects to various other small breeds. I tried to go for those with the elegance, long-leggedness and brisk, positive action the Standard asks for. PD (1) 1 Collins’ Salatini Rudolf Nureyev, 7 months brown/t smooth, a shade uncertain on the table at first but got over that and looked super going round, masculine head, well carried ears, fine bone, lithe and active, held a good topline on the move, good coming and going too. BP. JD (1) 1 Orchard and Holyland’s Nebesnyi Kolorit Supermen, blue/t smooth, felt he could be a shade more refined in head but good eye shape and colour, well carried ears, gently sloping topline, correct hindquarters, front could be a shade firmer. Moved true behind, a touch extravagant in front action. PGD (4) I Harrison’s Russiandream Coby Tolkien, this red was a real show-off with an eye-catching outline, super ears, excellent neck and topline, fine bone, typical moderate angulation but matching both ends to give an even, brisk movement holding his shape. BIR; 2 Hunter’s Vzglyad Drakona iz Grada Berez at Salatini, blue/t smooth with a refined head, good eye shape and well set ears, OK neck, very good straight front, oval chest with good tuck-up. A shade longer than 1 and not quite so elegant but moved smartly from all angles; 3 Holland and Strukova’s Ollarena Iternal Flame. OD (3) 1 Casey’s Russiandream Cody Fleming for Shamal, another red with great style and showmanship, masculine head, well carried and fringed ears, neck flows well into correct topline, stood slightly wide in front but moved OK, made a balanced picture going round. A close decision for BOB between him and the PG winner - they have many of the same virtues and turned out to be litter brothers. This one is a slightly more substantial type and I preferred Tolkien’s elegance but both should make many friends for the breed. RBD; 2 Orchard and Holyland’s Dutch Ch Fiesta Show Russian Pride, smart b/t whose head I admired, excellent topline and hindquarters, liked his body shape, indeed if anything a shade more lithe than winner who scored on front action today; 3 Harrison’s Russiandream Bennieorion.
PB (1) 1 Hunter’s Salatini Sugar Plum Fairy, 7 months brown/t smooth, a real baby and needs plenty of time to gain confidence. Attractive feminine head, correct bone, good forehand, moves well in front needs to let down behind a bit which will make for a more balanced action. PGB (4) 1 Dale’s Just Angel Dalia, quality brown/t, very good ears and fringing, perhaps a shade strong in muzzle but scored in overall balance, refined and leggy, correct open angulation, excellent topline and tuck-up and looked a picture going round with her brisk, purposeful action. BB; 2 Holyland and Strukova’s Ollarena Kleopatra, such a pretty feminine red, loved her head and ears, just the right neck, has the elegance I was looking for, sound hindquarters, not quite so firm in front or topline as 1 but has so much to like. RBB; 3 Hunter’s Rocket In The Pocket Betelgeize at Salatini. OB (2) 1 Holland and Strukova’s Ini Ch Primadonna iz Beloi Rusi, lovely quality red of beautiful balance, pretty head with good fringing, just the right bone, front could be a bit firmer, shapely body, retained her outline on the move though a shade close coming and going. Thought she might go further but insisted on hunching herself up in the challenge; 2 Mackeanzie’s Ollarena Goldie Licious, pale red smooth, OK head, well carried ears, one of the soundest made here but rather longer in back and not so elegant in outline.
UTILITY - PD (2) 1 Piper’s Kamora Nagual del Zanjero, this eyecatching 10 months Min Xolo appealed greatly, especially on the move with his free flowing springy step, firm topline, balanced moderate angulation and refined but masculine head, almond eyes, good ear carriage, should do very well. BP and RBD; 2 Poke’s Roltamshe Rocky, 7 months Intermediate Xolo, not so refined in head and skull, shapely elegant outline when standing, reachy neck into OK topline and quarters. Rather erratic on the move today and preferred skin of 1. JD (1) 1 Chambers’ Manzamas Fast And Furious for Musique, elegant well balanced Min Xolo, appeals in outline, masculine head with good skull-muzzle proportions and correct shape eye, nicely arched neck, strong topline, well made hindquarters with which he drives well. Slightly bowed in front and a shade extravagant in front action. PGD (2) 1 Wright’s Sand Man, masculine coated Std Xolo, stronger head type in proportion with well placed ears, shapely body with firm topline, strong hindquarters used well on the move, Front pasterns and feet could be a shade firmer; 2 Thornton and Griffiths’ Fawncrest Roly of Mexolo, quality Min Xolo of a finer type, quality head, enough neck, well ribbed back, bone in proportion to his size, moved true but didn’t retain his topline as well as 1. OD (3) 1 Thornton and Lockhart’s Sheldobchi Drummer Boy at Mexolo, showy Intermediate Xolo of attractive overall balance, correct tail carriage, liked his head which is masculine but still has quality, in good skin, like many could have stronger feet but made an appealing picture both standing and on the move; 2 Unwin and Winter’s Morningcalm White Wizard at Snowtrekka, strongly made Jindo, well proportioned head with almond eyes and nice thick ears, stand-off coat, good topline and tail carriage, steady side gait but could be truer coming and going; 3 Cunningham’s Jindo Cracker of Yulyeong.
PB (2) 1 Spry’s Roltamshe Skye, very elegant 7 months Intermediate Xolo, super quality head and eye, enough bone, reasonable feet, well ribbed, correct topline, strong hindquarters, close up to BP - at this stage the male kept his topline better going round; 2 Gray’s Kamora’s Sukatro, sister to BP, small and very feminine, head in proportion to her size, level back. Rather upright in front and tended to prance in front on the move. OK hindquarters.
OB (3) 1 Purnell-Carpenter’s Morningcalm White Cloud, quality Jindo of excellent overall balance, not in full coat but not much to hide! Super head and eyes, characteristic ears, smooth line through the neck and topline, strongly boned, correct moderate angulation balanced back and front which showed in her steady side gait retaining her topline. BIR; 2 Gray’s Oro Bello Carmen, very stylish Min Xolo in great condition, feminine expression, arched neck, super outline, good tail carriage, could just be a shade firmer in front but a free active mover. Wasn’t surprised to find she is the dam of the lovely puppy. RBB; 3 Spry’s Intermediate Xolo Tamoanchan Venus at Roltamshe.
